due to doran i have now listened to mc tunes album twice in a row on headphones.
its a lot of fun.
not sure i can handle digging out the dust junkys today though.
chuffed to see gravediggaz .. thats definitely one i need to excavate from the archive and fall back in love with.

mark e, Friday, 3 June 2011 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

I think Gravediggaz was my number three or four.

PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

letting ONE mase verse discredit like 50 amazing biggie verses is some bullshit

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

what is with ppl saying shit like this?

I don't care if you're white black a bitch or a fucking bum off of the streets. If you rap about shooting people, smoking blunts, wearing timbs, drinking hennessy, and whatever else, I'll buy your music. If you rap about your girl, but don't call her a bitch, fuck you. If you rap about the economy and how its hurts migrant workers, fuck you. If you rap about your rap telekenisis or some equally retarded nerd shit, fuck you. That basically how I break it down to an extent.

love how people itt are taking that quote as a directive they 100% agree with

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

that anyone 100% agrees with, i should say

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

not quite; just sayin if you wanna know where ppl itt getting the idea that positive rap or backpacker stuff is being frowned upon; there's a handy summation...

mr. mxstache (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

mr. mxstache (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

i doubt theres a person on this thread that doesnt like some nerdy ass forms of rap & i never see anyone rhetorically make the NOT REAL ENOUGH!!! argument for explaining why say dizzee rascal isnt as good as biggie. From everything yall have told me he grew up on a 'council estate' & may have at one time held a knife.

My post was about the Cannibal Ox album, not about Dizzee Rascal - I've never even heard a full album by him, just a couple of singles. That long-ass post I wrote was provoked by the immediate reactions to the Can Ox placing, though admittedly it was also informed by other ILM discussions where people offhandedly dismiss CO and the like because of the sci-fi/backpacker element. That Ethan post quoted above may have been trolling, but it's not that far from what some folks think "real" should be.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

(several x-posts)

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

if the top 100 rap albums thread on ilm doesn't include as least a modicum of clowning on backpacker and positive raps then something is terribly wrong w/ the internet tubes

backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

pretty much every person who's posted that delmar quote or said something about it approvingly listens to a lot of rap that breaks those 'rules' fyi

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

x-post People weren't really saying that Can Ox shouldn't be here, just maybe not so high. I think the Clipse caused a lot more smhs.

President Keyes, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

Considering that the artists ppl hate on for placement have included artists who make street rap I don't think the standard backpacker defensiveness really applies here.

One of my fav things watching former h8-the-mainstream dudes get into freddie gibbs, pill, clipse, rick ross even, is that it's showing how much these dudes were opposed to the aesthetics of street rap rather than /more than the content

lebroner (D-40), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

Gravediggaz is good and all but way too high

brodie to the max (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:27 (fifteen years ago)

Lol @ drugs a money for taking delmar serious

brodie to the max (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

hate itt seems to be centered on "overhyped"—backpacker or not

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

I've tried and tried but can't get into that gravediggaz album, kinda baffling cuz it should be right up my alley.

cannibal ox too. I find it boring as hell, all ideas and no guts.

backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Also I think the stodgy radio canon is the most important shit ever and I hate myself for forgetting to vote for slick rick.

No offense but I would seriously put a lot of you in internment camps and force you to listen to juice crew records, and I say that with live and as someone who is listening to the cute at this moment

brodie to the max (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

I just looked up the Ice Cube discography to see if there actually was anything past his first three that had a shot here and learned he released an album last year???

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

Ran that Cube album once through last year, but that was it. Cant usually get a great grasp after only 1 listen but I remember just wanting to play any of his first 3-4 albums instead, or Westside Connection. Cant even remember the couple good tracks on there.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

I was frantically searching for this mystical "the cute" band.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

There's something about Hip Hop that brings out the Harold Bloom in its listeners, me included. Setting markers about what albums are the canon and clowning people who have different opinions.

OTM. I guess it's enshrined in the music. This is a genre where a whole bunch of classic albums are largely about clowning other MCs for not doing hip hop "right". I just think all online quarrels about hip hop should have to be in rhyme, that's all.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

listening to 'the cute' :DDD

it's not just a hatred of a certain type of music tuomas - can ox are just shitty imo.

y'all ready for 24?

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

Super surprised that came out as early as 92 btw, i thought it was like a 95ish type record. So... ahead of its time. Also dope as fuck and redresses the 'not enough westcoast' balance a tiny bit

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

yesssss ^

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

So classic. Can't believe it's been nearly 20 years!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

A little high imo but still a great album - lets hear it for soul flower and ya mama and otha fish

lebroner (D-40), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

I really have a soft spot for The Pharcyde but Labcabincalifornia was always my favorite of theirs. Both are great though.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

Ya Mama is still my favorite light-hearted diss track.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

LOL. Your mother's got an afro wig with a chin strap &c.

PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

Lol I am not Delmar

you're nobody til somebody SBs you (symsymsym), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

we used to debate endlessly at the time about cypress hill(self titled) vs Bizarre Ride

Aerosol, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

Pharcyde is the best

you're nobody til somebody SBs you (symsymsym), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

I remember when this dropped and "capping on fools" was all the rage. Like however many good and unique ya mama jokes you could come up with and how effective you were as a "clowner" determined your status around campus. Then I heard Ya Mama and my life was flipped upside down, I had a trunk load of material that no one knew about, my status rose very quickly, ladies jocked, etc.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

Your Mama got a glass eye with a fish in it.

http://www.albumoftheyear.org/album/covers/stankonia.jpg

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

wow once we got this high w/o any Outkast i thought maybe Aquemeni would be the only one to place

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

Good run of albums I placed in my own top 30. I thought ATLiens might have placed further down.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

that is way too high for stankonia, though i didn't vote.
