Gravediggaz is a lock for the top 20, but I don't think Brand Nubian will place this high. Geto Boys are probably in the top 25 too.
― Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 08:32 (fifteen years ago)
I assumed 2Pac's Me Against the World would place higher than All Eyez on Me, but I'm not sure if ILXors like it enough to get it into the top 25. It'd be a nice surprise to see it there though.
― Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 08:36 (fifteen years ago)
i don't think mc tunes got a vote
You're just saying this to upset me.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 11:36 (fifteen years ago)
Isn't the whole point of these to bitch and moan about where things placed or didn't place? Otherwise it'd be a bunch of cirkle-jerking and hi fives all around
I totally get this by the way. It's just that the only reason I'm submitting myself to this whole ordeal is to get some recommends on some good albums I haven't heard yet but that the levels of vitriol on show are pretty high, seeing as my only crime seems to be that I don't like Tupac and I've put some albums in the 'wrong order'.
If it was up to me we'd gang up and laugh at people taking part in the Blur poll. But I'm a righteous dude like that.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 12:08 (fifteen years ago)
Y'know but in proper grammar and stuff.

tho i don't think i listened to 'battle for asgard' in a long time because i was annoyed by a line that i thought went 'this is the battle for as gard / and we fight AS GUARDS'
― thomp, Friday, 3 June 2011 12:45 (fifteen years ago)
There's something about Hip Hop that brings out the Harold Bloom in its listeners, me included. Setting markers about what albums are the canon and clowning people who have different opinions--especially new jacks who listen to half a Smif n Wessun album, say "they aaight" and then start going on about Madlib's 14th collection of Bongwater covers. Maybe it's because rap is such a competitive art form that we're always arguing about the GOAT or whatever.

So fuck it if you think rap music can’t be taken into that direction too without somehow compromising it's "realness".

what is with ppl saying shit like this? who in this thread is sitting around with thug life tats assuring everyone that they need to keep it real? i doubt theres a person on this thread that doesnt like some nerdy ass forms of rap & i never see anyone rhetorically make the NOT REAL ENOUGH!!! argument for explaining why say dizzee rascal isnt as good as biggie. From everything yall have told me he grew up on a 'council estate' & may have at one time held a knife. thats not the pt & never has been -- 'life after death' is better than boy in da corner -- EOS

what is with ppl saying shit like this?
I don't care if you're white black a bitch or a fucking bum off of the streets. If you rap about shooting people, smoking blunts, wearing timbs, drinking hennessy, and whatever else, I'll buy your music. If you rap about your girl, but don't call her a bitch, fuck you. If you rap about the economy and how its hurts migrant workers, fuck you. If you rap about your rap telekenisis or some equally retarded nerd shit, fuck you. That basically how I break it down to an extent.

not quite; just sayin if you wanna know where ppl itt getting the idea that positive rap or backpacker stuff is being frowned upon; there's a handy summation...

My post was about the Cannibal Ox album, not about Dizzee Rascal - I've never even heard a full album by him, just a couple of singles. That long-ass post I wrote was provoked by the immediate reactions to the Can Ox placing, though admittedly it was also informed by other ILM discussions where people offhandedly dismiss CO and the like because of the sci-fi/backpacker element. That Ethan post quoted above may have been trolling, but it's not that far from what some folks think "real" should be.
― Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:17 (fifteen years ago)
(several x-posts)
― Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)
if the top 100 rap albums thread on ilm doesn't include as least a modicum of clowning on backpacker and positive raps then something is terribly wrong w/ the internet tubes
― backpacker van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)
pretty much every person who's posted that delmar quote or said something about it approvingly listens to a lot of rap that breaks those 'rules' fyi
― a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)
x-post People weren't really saying that Can Ox shouldn't be here, just maybe not so high. I think the Clipse caused a lot more smhs.
― President Keyes, Friday, 3 June 2011 14:21 (fifteen years ago)
Considering that the artists ppl hate on for placement have included artists who make street rap I don't think the standard backpacker defensiveness really applies here.
One of my fav things watching former h8-the-mainstream dudes get into freddie gibbs, pill, clipse, rick ross even, is that it's showing how much these dudes were opposed to the aesthetics of street rap rather than /more than the content

cannibal ox too. I find it boring as hell, all ideas and no guts.

Ran that Cube album once through last year, but that was it. Cant usually get a great grasp after only 1 listen but I remember just wanting to play any of his first 3-4 albums instead, or Westside Connection. Cant even remember the couple good tracks on there.

OTM. I guess it's enshrined in the music. This is a genre where a whole bunch of classic albums are largely about clowning other MCs for not doing hip hop "right". I just think all online quarrels about hip hop should have to be in rhyme, that's all.
― We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 14:44 (fifteen years ago)
listening to 'the cute' :DDD
it's not just a hatred of a certain type of music tuomas - can ox are just shitty imo.
