i don't think it's the fact that clipse or can ox or dizzee made the list, just the placement

like, i reserve all right to call you a complete idiot if you think 'boy in da corner' is better than 'life after death' or 'hell hath no fury' is better than 'ridin dirty'

b.o.s.e. (banned ones still envy) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 June 2011 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

i'd place Ridin Dirty higher than HHNF if i ranked 'em on my own, but i also know which i've played more times and it ain't UGK, sad to say

(i've played UGK s/t double album the most of theirs, and think i voted for that, btw)

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:24 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think mc tunes got a vote. paul barman on the other hand may yet still make an appearance...

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:32 (fifteen years ago)

i dont give a fuck about ilxor's last fm i just think the rankings suck

lebroner (D-40), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:40 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think mc tunes got a vote

all cats are gay (sic), Friday, 3 June 2011 05:49 (fifteen years ago)

xp- luckily there was a GOON POLL that put elite deej-taste front and center, amirite?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

agree HHNF should be lower but i still <3 that record; agree it's a step above Lord Willin so at least ilm got that part right

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

how many records listed have you heard ilxor

lebroner (D-40), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:02 (fifteen years ago)

i would count 'em up but you'd make fun of me for counting

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:26 (fifteen years ago)

perhaps the 13 i've not heard are your 13 favorites?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:36 (fifteen years ago)

(i realize i have no excuse for not having hear All Eyez on Me fwiw)

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:37 (fifteen years ago)

tbf those are all the best ones

merked, Friday, 3 June 2011 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

i mean i've noticed ppl getting super-excited for those but is that just 'cause they are all "unexpected" and not "canon"? who knows. ill check out a bunch of em regardless though im sure

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 3 June 2011 06:46 (fifteen years ago)

Isn't the whole point of these to bitch and moan about where things placed or didn't place? Otherwise it'd be a bunch of cirkle-jerking and hi fives all around, nah, people should be held accountable for their decisions. Like I too rushed my list and neglected to vote for Rick the Ruler, and now I feel like a shlump.

Some great lp's on here tho and there's been plenty of positivity to balance it all out. Not sure you would find rhythmalism or just trying to live on the average best of list.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 07:03 (fifteen years ago)

You really need All Eyez on Me too.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 3 June 2011 07:05 (fifteen years ago)

there is def quite a few things that shouldn't have placed + the rankings are v weird but mostly these are classic albums

OB4CL >>> 36 chambers

btw

shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

i'm cool with lord willin placing low in a poll like this but HHNF probably not (altho i think it's great)

shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 07:39 (fifteen years ago)

i'm a big BDK guy will be sad if nothing by him places. voted 4 'big daddy thing'

shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

i guess 'get rich or die trying' isn't gonna place :(

shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

Nice to see Sex Packets (my #12) and The Cold Vein (my #5) make it so high. I don't really see any point in this kind of a false dichotomy that only backpackers (and Britishers) who don't care about "real" rap music can dig Can Ox. I don't listen to that much backpacker rap (Company Flow, Aesop Rock, etc bore me, and I've never even heard anything by Sage Francis, Non-Prophets and whathever was mentioned in that list above), and I've heard plenty of dire sci-fi rap, but I can dig it when someone actually manages to make something great out of those elements. The Cold Vein has some incredibly cold and dystopian and evocative beats (it sounds much better than El-P's production on the Company Flow albums), a rapper with one of the most unique flows of all time, and a good blend of clever metaphors and social commentary, sci-fi telekinesis shit and more down-to-earth storytelling. So you shouldn’t dimiss just because it's lumped together with other records that rap fundamentalists aren’t supposed to like.

I've listened to rap music ever since I was a kid, but like many other ILXors I also have my geeky interests. I read science fiction and fantasy books, I've been down with Marvel comics for as long as I've been down with rap, but I never liked heavy metal, even if it does have a lot of that fantasy and sci-fi imagery... So when I hear stuff like Cannibal Ox rapping about ”The Battle for Asgard”, with Vordul saying he's swallowing planets like Galactus, with beats that sound like Odin pummeling Surtur, that’s like two of my favourite things together! I love Digital Underground and 2Pac and the more street-level kinds of rap too, and I listen to that more than esoteric sci-fi rap, but sometimes the esoteric stuff just touches a chord in me that other stuff doesn’t. So fuck it if you think rap music can’t be taken into that direction too without somehow compromising it's "realness".

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

the cold vein is a cool album bro just it's way too high.

i wouldn't vote for dizzee on this poll, just cos i kind of think of british "urban" (hate this term) music as a different genre sorry

u know what would be an AMAZING poll would be the 100 greatest rap albums excluding this list...

shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 07:59 (fifteen years ago)

i'm british btw

shalmaneser (tpp), Friday, 3 June 2011 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

Public Enemy x 2
Ice Cube x 2
Outkast x 2
Tribe x 2
NWA
Pharcyde
Beastie Boys
Notorious BIG
Nas
Jay-Z
GZA
Raekwon
Wu-Tang
Mobb Deep
De La
Dre
Snoop
Brand Nubian
Eric B & Rakim
AN Other x 2 - Gravediggaz? Geto Boys? Souls of Mischief? KMD?

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 3 June 2011 08:21 (fifteen years ago)

Gravediggaz is a lock for the top 20, but I don't think Brand Nubian will place this high. Geto Boys are probably in the top 25 too.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 08:32 (fifteen years ago)

I assumed 2Pac's Me Against the World would place higher than All Eyez on Me, but I'm not sure if ILXors like it enough to get it into the top 25. It'd be a nice surprise to see it there though.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 08:36 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think mc tunes got a vote

You're just saying this to upset me.

Isn't the whole point of these to bitch and moan about where things placed or didn't place? Otherwise it'd be a bunch of cirkle-jerking and hi fives all around

I totally get this by the way. It's just that the only reason I'm submitting myself to this whole ordeal is to get some recommends on some good albums I haven't heard yet but that the levels of vitriol on show are pretty high, seeing as my only crime seems to be that I don't like Tupac and I've put some albums in the 'wrong order'.

If it was up to me we'd gang up and laugh at people taking part in the Blur poll. But I'm a righteous dude like that.

PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 12:08 (fifteen years ago)

Y'know but in proper grammar and stuff.

PG Harpy (Doran), Friday, 3 June 2011 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

that was a good post by tuomas, five or six posts ago

thomp, Friday, 3 June 2011 12:44 (fifteen years ago)

tho i don't think i listened to 'battle for asgard' in a long time because i was annoyed by a line that i thought went 'this is the battle for as gard / and we fight AS GUARDS'

thomp, Friday, 3 June 2011 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

There's something about Hip Hop that brings out the Harold Bloom in its listeners, me included. Setting markers about what albums are the canon and clowning people who have different opinions--especially new jacks who listen to half a Smif n Wessun album, say "they aaight" and then start going on about Madlib's 14th collection of Bongwater covers. Maybe it's because rap is such a competitive art form that we're always arguing about the GOAT or whatever.

President Keyes, Friday, 3 June 2011 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

hey guys* i'm need to pop out for an hour but i'll first leave you with #25.

what is with ppl saying shit like this? who in this thread is sitting around with thug life tats assuring everyone that they need to keep it real? i doubt theres a person on this thread that doesnt like some nerdy ass forms of rap & i never see anyone rhetorically make the NOT REAL ENOUGH!!! argument for explaining why say dizzee rascal isnt as good as biggie. due to doran i have now listened to mc tunes album twice in a row on headphones.
its a lot of fun.
not sure i can handle digging out the dust junkys today though.
chuffed to see gravediggaz .. thats definitely one i need to excavate from the archive and fall back in love with.

mark e, Friday, 3 June 2011 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

I think Gravediggaz was my number three or four.

letting ONE mase verse discredit like 50 amazing biggie verses is some bullshit

what is with ppl saying shit like this?

I don't care if you're white black a bitch or a fucking bum off of the streets. If you rap about shooting people, smoking blunts, wearing timbs, drinking hennessy, and whatever else, I'll buy your music. If you rap about your girl, but don't call her a bitch, fuck you. If you rap about the economy and how its hurts migrant workers, fuck you. If you rap about your rap telekenisis or some equally retarded nerd shit, fuck you. That basically how I break it down to an extent.

My post was about the Cannibal Ox album, not about Dizzee Rascal - I've never even heard a full album by him, just a couple of singles. That long-ass post I wrote was provoked by the immediate reactions to the Can Ox placing, though admittedly it was also informed by other ILM discussions where people offhandedly dismiss CO and the like because of the sci-fi/backpacker element. That Ethan post quoted above may have been trolling, but it's not that far from what some folks think "real" should be.
