I voted for Slick Rick.

I'd suggest that if there's an album that clearly doesn't belong on this list, it's not Boy In Da Corner but Endtroducing. And I know that was a much bigger deal in the States than it was here.

like, i reserve all right to call you a complete idiot if you think 'boy in da corner' is better than 'life after death' or 'hell hath no fury' is better than 'ridin dirty'

i'd place Ridin Dirty higher than HHNF if i ranked 'em on my own, but i also know which i've played more times and it ain't UGK, sad to say
(i've played UGK s/t double album the most of theirs, and think i voted for that, btw)

Isn't the whole point of these to bitch and moan about where things placed or didn't place? Otherwise it'd be a bunch of cirkle-jerking and hi fives all around, nah, people should be held accountable for their decisions. Like I too rushed my list and neglected to vote for Rick the Ruler, and now I feel like a shlump.
Some great lp's on here tho and there's been plenty of positivity to balance it all out. Not sure you would find rhythmalism or just trying to live on the average best of list.

Nice to see Sex Packets (my #12) and The Cold Vein (my #5) make it so high. I don't really see any point in this kind of a false dichotomy that only backpackers (and Britishers) who don't care about "real" rap music can dig Can Ox. I don't listen to that much backpacker rap (Company Flow, Aesop Rock, etc bore me, and I've never even heard anything by Sage Francis, Non-Prophets and whathever was mentioned in that list above), and I've heard plenty of dire sci-fi rap, but I can dig it when someone actually manages to make something great out of those elements. The Cold Vein has some incredibly cold and dystopian and evocative beats (it sounds much better than El-P's production on the Company Flow albums), a rapper with one of the most unique flows of all time, and a good blend of clever metaphors and social commentary, sci-fi telekinesis shit and more down-to-earth storytelling. So you shouldn’t dimiss just because it's lumped together with other records that rap fundamentalists aren’t supposed to like.
I've listened to rap music ever since I was a kid, but like many other ILXors I also have my geeky interests. I read science fiction and fantasy books, I've been down with Marvel comics for as long as I've been down with rap, but I never liked heavy metal, even if it does have a lot of that fantasy and sci-fi imagery... So when I hear stuff like Cannibal Ox rapping about ”The Battle for Asgard”, with Vordul saying he's swallowing planets like Galactus, with beats that sound like Odin pummeling Surtur, that’s like two of my favourite things together! I love Digital Underground and 2Pac and the more street-level kinds of rap too, and I listen to that more than esoteric sci-fi rap, but sometimes the esoteric stuff just touches a chord in me that other stuff doesn’t. So fuck it if you think rap music can’t be taken into that direction too without somehow compromising it's "realness".
― Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 07:49 (fifteen years ago)
the cold vein is a cool album bro just it's way too high.
i wouldn't vote for dizzee on this poll, just cos i kind of think of british "urban" (hate this term) music as a different genre sorry

― Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2011 08:32 (fifteen years ago)
I assumed 2Pac's Me Against the World would place higher than All Eyez on Me, but I'm not sure if ILXors like it enough to get it into the top 25. It'd be a nice surprise to see it there though.

I totally get this by the way. It's just that the only reason I'm submitting myself to this whole ordeal is to get some recommends on some good albums I haven't heard yet but that the levels of vitriol on show are pretty high, seeing as my only crime seems to be that I don't like Tupac and I've put some albums in the 'wrong order'.
If it was up to me we'd gang up and laugh at people taking part in the Blur poll. But I'm a righteous dude like that.

There's something about Hip Hop that brings out the Harold Bloom in its listeners, me included. Setting markers about what albums are the canon and clowning people who have different opinions--especially new jacks who listen to half a Smif n Wessun album, say "they aaight" and then start going on about Madlib's 14th collection of Bongwater covers. Maybe it's because rap is such a competitive art form that we're always arguing about the GOAT or whatever.
