Didn't Katy Perry sing a cover of "Friday" or something? I dunno- that single cover immediately made me think of Rebecca Black too, fwiw.

Yes, Katy Perry had a recent video floating around the Internet of herself covering "Friday" at one of her concerts.

do keep up, dayo

just had to post this remix of the Dev single:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZdh13_bijo

EXTREMELY DOPE... especially the switch-up in the middle.

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, damn. I was hella skeptical when I pressed play but this is dope.

skot gigz - moombah pimpin' (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

OMG that switchup.

skot gigz - moombah pimpin' (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

I hope dubstep with female vocals and lightness of touch like this and "Katy on a Mission" becomes a thing. With all the UK post-dubstep stuff splintering off into own thing entirely, something has to counterbalance the rampant macho idiocy within dubstep now.

skot gigz - moombah pimpin' (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

both Drake and Mike Posner have said some kind of variation of "you said you wanna leave but I know you're gonna stay" on hit songs in the last few months, which leads me to the conclusion that that is the douchiest phrase in the English language

some dude, Friday, 27 May 2011 13:43 (fifteen years ago)

lol

i wonder if dev will score a big solo hit and save herself from the fate of becoming an eternal hook-girl

teledyldonix, Friday, 27 May 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

omg this video is good!

What do we think of Wynter Gordon's "Til Death"??

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 10:37 (fifteen years ago)

All the people saying it's no "Dirty Talk" are kinda right, I can't imagine this controlling my life at 2am in a gay club really, but I want to like it.

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 10:38 (fifteen years ago)

i heard it the other day, i didn't think much of it either way. i resisted "dirty talk" hard b/c of its borderline cringe-inducing verses but the chorus proved irresistible.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

jason aldean's "dirt road anthem" seems to have something of a chance of becoming a crossover pop hit -- on the heels of its recent cmt awards performance, the main version of the song AND a new remix featuring ludacris are both selling very strongly.

on a related note, how rare are country star + rapper collabs? only one i can think of off the top of my head is nelly and tim mcgraw

teledyldonix, Friday, 10 June 2011 10:39 (fifteen years ago)

I heard a joint by "the band perry" yesterday that I thoughbwas pretty dope

"Give me everything" is kinda killing tho

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 June 2011 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

i think the only the band perry song i've heard is "you lie" and it's pretty great

uberweiss, Friday, 10 June 2011 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

i've had the band perry on my display name pun to-do list for like 6 months now

some dude, Friday, 10 June 2011 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

Ha

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 June 2011 13:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah "you lie" is pretty good, their first single was ok too even though it was basically a colbie caillat song

teledyldonix, Friday, 10 June 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, man. Delving back into the realm of Canadian pop music, both for Jukebox and for interest/lolz. Forgot how strange and awesome it is.

First: Simple Plan - did you guys ever get them? French-Canadian final wave of Sum41 pop punk who normally sing in English. But their lead single was released bilingually! One featuring Natasha Bedingfield, and the other featuring some Quebecois Idol chick. And I'm kind of digging it?

Also, Raghav, Indo-Canadian R&B singer, whose new album is 75% Jim Beanz jams like this:

and 25% Hindi songs, including a refix of Hold Yuh:

All of this stuff has/is charting in the Hot 100, and most of it in the Billboard Canadian Top 40.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 10 June 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Simple Plan's first couple albums got a pretty big push from MTV, were moderately successful. amazing that they still exist!

some dude, Friday, 10 June 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

Jet Lag has nothing on "I'd Do Anything" which was a total summer jam around 2003, but still.

Even more amazing that they manage to sing without sounded as Quebecois as they speak, imo.

My favourite for sheer WTFness is still Kristina Maria, who had a song in the top 20 which is basically about kinky sex and toys and ropes and so forth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC7J3KQd1lk

but whose bio on the website I found when I Googled her in an attempt to find out who the fuck she is, tells us:

At the same time, Kristina’s love of music kept her on the right path. While some of her schoolmates in Ottawa were turning to drugs and alcohol out of boredom or not being able to find a direction in life, Kristina’s passion for music was so strong, she had no interest in the darker side of life in her hometown. “I saw people destroying their lives, and for what? It can be very difficult to resist peer pressure, or not go along with what everyone else is doing, but I knew that I wanted to be a singer and I was lucky enough to know that drinking and using drugs was not for me.”...“As soon as we met, we both felt like we had known each other for a long, long time. I was looking for somebody who really believed in me, and that was Vito.” Luprano, a father with three daughters, immediately recognized that Kristina was not only an extremely talented singer, but as a young girl who had resisted the lure of drugs and alcohol, she was a perfect role model for other teens.

Buy my album! I am a wholesome role model! Who sings about kinky sex! But I have never done drugs! In the second most boring city in Canada!

^^
what's the first?

jer.fairall, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

well, i dunno. Ottawa's the capital, so I assume there's somewhere that's just as boring but doesn't have the federal gov't.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 10 June 2011 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

Saskatoon?

The Reverend, Friday, 10 June 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 June 2011 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

it's been a great year for videos imo

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 June 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah i know, i just had to post it on the thread where dayo turned over a table (xpost)

t-bomb burnett (some dude), Monday, 13 June 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

t-bomb burnett (some dude), Monday, 13 June 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

The song is all at the beginning tho.

51 suggest gang (The Reverend), Monday, 13 June 2011 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm just saying on principle -- if your video is more than 1 minute longer than the song itself and your name isn't michael jackson, you need to cut that shit out

t-bomb burnett (some dude), Monday, 13 June 2011 23:52 (fifteen years ago)

i feel u

51 suggest gang (The Reverend), Monday, 13 June 2011 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, long videos are nagl, this is 2011 y'all *clicks away*

markers, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

um so i heard jason derulo's new single on the radio yesterday. shockingly it did not inspire anger/hatred within me... which is strange because i actually can't identify one specific thing about the song that i enjoy that hasn't been lifted directly out of another song.

on that note, the banana boat song is quite popular source material these days, it seems.

yeah the DeRulo and "6 Foot 7 Foot" coming out so close together reminds of that weird moment in '09 when there were three songs on the charts sampling/interpolating "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye"

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

that is probably the worst thing i've heard all year tbh

also I know she is british and everything but wtf is a swagger JAGGER

the correct term is "swagger jacker"

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 16 June 2011 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 16 June 2011 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

i would probably like this a lot if it weren't for the singer

badtz-maruizm (donna rouge), Thursday, 16 June 2011 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

"Helena Beat" is the real sleeper/keeper from the Foster the People album.

Yeah yeah and it’s okay.
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don’t fall that way.
Yeah yeah and I’m alright.
I took a sip of something poison but I’ll hold on tight.
