Beyonce's trying to salvage her "Girls" song-- performed it on the Billboard Music Awards tonight
― curmudgeon, Monday, 23 May 2011 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
is it really "salvaging" if she was going to perform her current single on the next big awards show regardless of whether it was doing well on the charts or not?
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 02:31 (fifteen years ago)
I meant salvage the success of the song in the marketplace.
― curmudgeon, Monday, 23 May 2011 12:32 (fifteen years ago)
yea i mean hello is the kind of song that is soo obvious but it works
― j lol (surm), Monday, 23 May 2011 13:07 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, and my point is that "salvaging" is most likely an entirely exterior narrative, and she probably booked and started rehearsing that performance before the song was even out and would've done that song that way whether it was #1 on the charts or #100
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 19:47 (fifteen years ago)
lots of people being total sheep w/r/t dismissing "run the world"
― the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)
more like total sheeit
― J0rdan S., Monday, 23 May 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
how can you 'tell' when people are reacting honestly and when they're following the flock, o wise one
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
i'm not so much talking about indiv reactions, more the editorial slant that leads to words like "salvaged" being bandied around, and the "this should have been the single" attitude to the new one etc.
― the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2011 20:00 (fifteen years ago)
ii just think it's funny how after YEARS of big stars doing warmup singles, or simultaneous/consecutive single releases for different artists, people still freak out if the first thing they hear isn't an obvious hit. it's Beyonce, she'll have her hits.
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Monday, 23 May 2011 20:02 (fifteen years ago)
otm. they won't kick her off columbia for one single obviously, what's the worst that can happen? she has the star power to make a few missteps, and i wouldn't consider a top-40 single as being that egregious of an error in the first place
― chilli, Monday, 23 May 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i think it's the automatic conflation of commercial underperformance with "a misstep" or a mistake or something - like we all know the goal of pop is to shift units but it really has no bearing on how much i enjoy a song, and i'm disappointed in ~critical outlets~ for acting like it does
― the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Monday, 23 May 2011 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
nb i have no idea how "run the world" has even done on the charts & tbh i don't care
people still freak out if the first thing they hear isn't an obvious hit. it's Beyonce, she'll have her hits.
Who is freaking out and thinks she won't have her hits? Just saying this song is not an obvious hit is not the same thing. Who is saying "this song is not at the top of the charts and therefore she won't have more hits from this upcoming album." Some Dude, you may have read more than I have about this single and maybe there are people freaking re the hit potential for the whole album, but I haven't read that.
As for the merits of the song, I kinda agree with Maura in the Voice who likes it but adds:
there's also something exhausting about it that goes beyond its cheer-team beats. It doesn't seem so much like a song as it does a collection of movements, of snippets that can be broken down into iTunes previews.
― curmudgeon, Monday, 23 May 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)
when i'm referring to you, i quote your post or address you specifically. when i say "people" i mean...people.

i'm assuming it's more of a Rebecca Black homage than a generic "omg glamorous pop star pretending to be a nerd"
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 13:15 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't really get a 'nerd' sense from rebecca black at all
and the song predates rebecca black's memedom
― and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 13:37 (fifteen years ago)
looking at the lyrics I'm judging there's gonna be a 'nerd lets her hair down and has a wild night' music vid
― and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 13:38 (fifteen years ago)
i was saying the awkward teen thing seemed Rebecca Black-ish AS OPPOSED TO Taylor wearing glasses in a video and being all omg nerd. also duh single artwork (and video) can have inspiration more recent than the song's original release.
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 13:46 (fifteen years ago)
there are many diff shades of awkward teens & nerds, guess youre too far removed from that time to have a good feel gramps
― and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 13:49 (fifteen years ago)
i like that artwork
― j lol (surm), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 13:59 (fifteen years ago)
also great title
dayo i can't even tell what you're "arguing" and it's not because of any removal from the world of young ppl, it's because you're harping on something completely irrelevant for the sake of arguing
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:09 (fifteen years ago)
i just hope the song is as good as the title
― j lol (surm), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:15 (fifteen years ago)
guess I'm failing to see how ott caricature conforming to every nerd stereotype scans as rebecca black, sorry some dad
― and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:20 (fifteen years ago)
the song has "Friday" in the title and Katy Perry is not exactly one to shy away from an obvious or played out joke, is all i'm saying.
― Waluigi Weingoomba (some dude), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:24 (fifteen years ago)
let's not make it more complicated than it actually is
― and the suggest banned tweeted on (dayo), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:26 (fifteen years ago)
I mean, did you even watch the rebecca black video
Didn't Katy Perry sing a cover of "Friday" or something? I dunno- that single cover immediately made me think of Rebecca Black too, fwiw.
― lurking off (lou), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, Katy Perry had a recent video floating around the Internet of herself covering "Friday" at one of her concerts.
do keep up, dayo

EXTREMELY DOPE... especially the switch-up in the middle.
― The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:57 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, damn. I was hella skeptical when I pressed play but this is dope.
― skot gigz - moombah pimpin' (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 00:34 (fifteen years ago)
OMG that switchup.
― skot gigz - moombah pimpin' (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
I hope dubstep with female vocals and lightness of touch like this and "Katy on a Mission" becomes a thing. With all the UK post-dubstep stuff splintering off into own thing entirely, something has to counterbalance the rampant macho idiocy within dubstep now.
― skot gigz - moombah pimpin' (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 00:41 (fifteen years ago)
both Drake and Mike Posner have said some kind of variation of "you said you wanna leave but I know you're gonna stay" on hit songs in the last few months, which leads me to the conclusion that that is the douchiest phrase in the English language
