is it really "salvaging" if she was going to perform her current single on the next big awards show regardless of whether it was doing well on the charts or not?

yeah, and my point is that "salvaging" is most likely an entirely exterior narrative, and she probably booked and started rehearsing that performance before the song was even out and would've done that song that way whether it was #1 on the charts or #100

ii just think it's funny how after YEARS of big stars doing warmup singles, or simultaneous/consecutive single releases for different artists, people still freak out if the first thing they hear isn't an obvious hit. it's Beyonce, she'll have her hits.

otm. they won't kick her off columbia for one single obviously, what's the worst that can happen? she has the star power to make a few missteps, and i wouldn't consider a top-40 single as being that egregious of an error in the first place

yeah i think it's the automatic conflation of commercial underperformance with "a misstep" or a mistake or something - like we all know the goal of pop is to shift units but it really has no bearing on how much i enjoy a song, and i'm disappointed in ~critical outlets~ for acting like it does

Who is freaking out and thinks she won't have her hits? Just saying this song is not an obvious hit is not the same thing. Who is saying "this song is not at the top of the charts and therefore she won't have more hits from this upcoming album." Some Dude, you may have read more than I have about this single and maybe there are people freaking re the hit potential for the whole album, but I haven't read that.

As for the merits of the song, I kinda agree with Maura in the Voice who likes it but adds:

there's also something exhausting about it that goes beyond its cheer-team beats. It doesn't seem so much like a song as it does a collection of movements, of snippets that can be broken down into iTunes previews.

i was saying the awkward teen thing seemed Rebecca Black-ish AS OPPOSED TO Taylor wearing glasses in a video and being all omg nerd. also duh single artwork (and video) can have inspiration more recent than the song's original release.
