I was stuck in a group with young (19ish) relatives of a friend at Lollapalooza a couple years ago and they were totally of that 4chan mindset contenderizer is talking about. They were walking around the grounds with swastikas drawn in pen on their chests and loudly letting every female know how bad they wanted to "fuck (their) tight pooper(s)". Our mutual acquantaince went off on them several times about how abhorrent their behavior was, but they just did NOT understand why. We were just "gay fags" that didn't "understand" "humor".

L than Zero is one of my favorite books and I love Ellis in general. I don't think anything here is that new tbh. It's nothing we haven't heard before it's just that it's extremely direct and being critically lauded to a degree that other stuff like this hasn't. Maybe. Outraged reactions are not all the same. I think reasonable people can be trusted to judge which outraged reactions are bullshit and which are valid. The suggestion that Marilyn Manson was to blame for Columbine was stupid, people rightly judged it so, and it didn't really hurt his career. On the other hand, the Michael Richards incident didn't trigger too much defense or handwringing, but led to a pretty quick "fuck that guy" response that ended his career. The problem with this situation is that ideally it should trigger the latter reaction, but as a society I guess we're not there yet.
