no matter what, NOTHING matters and everything (internet culture) is a cesspool, so it's cooler and funnier to beat the cesspool at its own game. note that i didn't say "better". it's not better to beat the cesspool at its own game, because those sorts of valuations don't play into it. cool & funny wins - but only so long as it lacks any possible justification.
from my POV, it's unfortunate that this stance is expressed through juvenile male misogyny and casual homophobia, but given that being the worst seems like the point, it would necessarily be "unfortunate" no matter what. and maybe its lazy to blame 4chan and the bang bus for tyler, but it's hard not to see an album like goblin as the chickens coming home to roost in a way, the children of our online culture beginning to decorate the outside world so that it matches the playpen in which they were raised.
not presenting this as either a defense or an endorsement, mind...

this is a very good angle
i do keep thinking about 'less than zero' as well though; i mean, it's a pretty old position at the same time as it's an absolutely new one, you know?
― thomp, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:00 (fifteen years ago)
a thing that i'm curious about: what, precisely, is the hallmark of tyler coming across as 'actually sympathetic to rape' and not 'exploring a trope', which is a position aerosmith put forward and a couple of others have cosigned? i'm curious if there's a thing that people would point to, or if it's a question of "this is the vibe that this kid gives out" -- which is, i think, a fair response at this point

someone mentioned the idea upthread that OF are one of the first clear products of a generation raised from birth on free internet porn and sites like 4chan, which makes a kind of sense to me.
lol i said this near the beginning of the thread & got a bunch of dudes mad at me NO ITS ACTUALLY SKATER CULTURE U N00B

I'm not too interested in mounting a vigorous defense of OF. it's obv offensive and reprehensible music. it's not for everybody. I mean, I wouldn't bother trying to convince a police officer that "fuck tha police" is an awesome song. I can talk about what I get out of OF tho.
prolly the best summation of OF's nihilist outlook is hodgy's verse on "sandwitches", in which he tells his mother to suck his dick, denounces the church, calls god a cancer, and asks to be killed with a chainsaw before professing his affiliation with satan and the internet. it's sexist, irreverent, blasphemous, juvenile, and funny. the verse below, in fact a lot of OF material, is about disconnection and hate, the splenetic rage of sons growing up without fathers in a godless world. as a son who grew up without a father, and one who's trying to be a good father to his own son, I believe there is some catharsis, and yes, morality, to be gleaned from the spectacle.
my love is gone for you, mommy, you could ride in hearsesI'm sick in the brain, dumb bitch, can you nurse this?you told me life would never, ever, ever get this perfectthen you smoke a jay of weed and take his kids to the churchesfuck church, they singin' and the shit ain't even worth itin the choir, whores and liars, scumbags in the dirt, bitchyou told me god was the answer, when I ask him for shitI get no answer, so god is the cancerI'm stuck in triangles, lookin' for my angelkill me with a chainsaw, and let my balls dangletriple six is my number, you can get it off my tumblr
hodgy doesn't bother to finish the last quatrain. the music drops out and he sniggers, cuz that's what ppl do after they tell a rude joke.

I was stuck in a group with young (19ish) relatives of a friend at Lollapalooza a couple years ago and they were totally of that 4chan mindset contenderizer is talking about. They were walking around the grounds with swastikas drawn in pen on their chests and loudly letting every female know how bad they wanted to "fuck (their) tight pooper(s)". Our mutual acquantaince went off on them several times about how abhorrent their behavior was, but they just did NOT understand why. We were just "gay fags" that didn't "understand" "humor".

what was that southern rap song where the guy is having sex with the pregnant woman and he keeps hitting the baby in the head with his penis? anyone remember?
― scott seward, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)
L than Zero is one of my favorite books and I love Ellis in general. I don't think anything here is that new tbh. It's nothing we haven't heard before it's just that it's extremely direct and being critically lauded to a degree that other stuff like this hasn't. Maybe. You guys have been talking about this for like a year and still haven't figured anything out so I guess that's not going to happen this afternoon. What Contenderizer said does have make sense in a lot of ways. I still don't have to like it but it's not like I can't see where it's coming from. I don't know. I need some coffee.

or it will be, i should say /nostradamus
outraged reactions (which is what my post was referring to) are all basically the same - content provoking that reaction was not all uniform, duh
Outraged reactions are not all the same. I think reasonable people can be trusted to judge which outraged reactions are bullshit and which are valid. The suggestion that Marilyn Manson was to blame for Columbine was stupid, people rightly judged it so, and it didn't really hurt his career. On the other hand, the Michael Richards incident didn't trigger too much defense or handwringing, but led to a pretty quick "fuck that guy" response that ended his career. The problem with this situation is that ideally it should trigger the latter reaction, but as a society I guess we're not there yet.
children growing up on a steady diet of first person shooters, vile porn, and internet trolling, what do you expect!?
I expect that maybe they could keep it on 4chan, and adults who should know better shouldn't be helping them have an actual career.

Who mentioned "vibe" earlier? I am not getting a trolling vibe. Sorry. I appreciate a good troll as much as anyone but not feeling it with this dude. Sorry. Maybe I'm just not getting the "joke" this time.

― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
sometimes, and I say this in full knowledge of the language I am using, you have to call a spade a spade
there's no joke! maybe we define trolling differently.there's a scene in that K article that explains Tyler perfectlyhe's watching an older man push a wheeled cart and yells something like "look at that motherfucker with the walker on wheels!"older guy hears him, stops and stares daggers at tylerTyler looks away and mumbles something about how if dude was fourteen he woulda had his ass kickeddude is a creative, somewhat maladjusted net kiddie looking to rile people up who backs WAY OFF when he's confrontedlike when bruno mars came back with a godhelpme BATTLE RAP, tyler was all "whoa didn't know dude could spit like that"
― crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
he is screaming shit out of the moving car of the internet. there is no thought. there is no message. he is an idiot.
― crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
and i believe the children are our future
so basically you agree he is a thoughtless, spineless bully who should really shut the fuck up, but you like his music
― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
trolling occurs w/in a persona, aims only to generate a negative reaction, constitutes a childish kind of competitive play. maybe most importantly, is a product of internet culture and exists w/in its rules, aesthetics, ethics. note to lars von trier: does not work well irl.
that aside, fuck tyler

whether "thoughtless, spineless bully who should really shut the fuck up" is a "persona" or not is up for grabs, but when you're being a dick like this, who cares.again, for those who missed this bit a gazillion posts up, in the NYT piece with caramanica, jon talks about tyler throwing a half finished frosty milkshake out the window at some well dressed strangers. you can't do that ironically.
