he's like a wholly repellent Method Man

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

there's a co-worker who came to a brainstorming meeting and said there was this crazy guy Tyler that's getting a lot of buzz for going on Jimmy Fallon with garden gnomes and maybe we could do a top ten wacky Tyler things. I let him know Tyler's antics went FAR beyond garden gnomes and other wacky TV props, an hour later the poor guy came across the Tiger Beatdown essay and announced his mortification.

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

you should TOTALLY do a top ten wacky Tyler things, but do it in the bitterest, most sarcastic voice possible and go through all of his awful bullshit, culminating in the Sara tweet at #2 and the account from his live show at #1

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

wait Anthony works for Letterman?

i don't really know anything about the site. seen the name before.

scott seward, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure skrewdriver was already invoked way upthread. It's funny though how people want to equate this with Elvis wiggling his hips and Alice Cooper singing about dead babies, and not the bigotry and hate that it is.

that's not what it is. that's much too easy. this is teen nihilism, not a political call to organized hatred (not that the two are necessarily distinct, but...)

someone mentioned the idea upthread that OF are one of the first clear products of a generation raised from birth on free internet porn and sites like 4chan, which makes a kind of sense to me. in light of that, i think you can see an ethos at work in tyler's shit, an ethos that takes "nothing matters, so don't take any of this shit seriously" as a cardinal rule.

and that's easy to accept. we're all used to pop nihilism and offense for its own sake. but tyler pushes his will to offend farther than anyone else currently playing the game. for one thing, he rarely reveals the sheep's heart under the wolves' clothing. he doesn't rap about being a terrorist or a cop killer, awful things that a morally sensate audience might find somehow find justifiable. tyler seems to reject any positioning that might make his worst shit seem justifiable. instead, he goes instead for the most repulsive and pointless provocations possible, and that's entirely consistent with the baseline 4chan ethos i mentioned above. no matter what, NOTHING matters and everything (internet culture) is a cesspool, so it's cooler and funnier to beat the cesspool at its own game. note that i didn't say "better". it's not better to beat the cesspool at its own game, because those sorts of valuations don't play into it. cool & funny wins - but only so long as it lacks any possible justification.

from my POV, it's unfortunate that this stance is expressed through juvenile male misogyny and casual homophobia, but given that being the worst seems like the point, it would necessarily be "unfortunate" no matter what. and maybe its lazy to blame 4chan and the bang bus for tyler, but it's hard not to see an album like goblin as the chickens coming home to roost in a way, the children of our online culture beginning to decorate the outside world so that it matches the playpen in which they were raised.

not presenting this as either a defense or an endorsement, mind...

who raised their kids on 4chan and Bang Bus, is what I want to know

So I just read both the Sara post (never heard T&S before today btw) and the Tiger Beatdown one. The former is fine if a little boring but I love the hell out of the second one and it got me fired up all over again. OK not really but I did think it was pretty good. This kid's a stupid twerp. That is all.

this is a very good angle

i do keep thinking about 'less than zero' as well though; i mean, it's a pretty old position at the same time as it's an absolutely new one, you know?

thomp, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

a thing that i'm curious about: what, precisely, is the hallmark of tyler coming across as 'actually sympathetic to rape' and not 'exploring a trope', which is a position aerosmith put forward and a couple of others have cosigned? i'm curious if there's a thing that people would point to, or if it's a question of "this is the vibe that this kid gives out" -- which is, i think, a fair response at this point

thomp, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

someone mentioned the idea upthread that OF are one of the first clear products of a generation raised from birth on free internet porn and sites like 4chan, which makes a kind of sense to me.

lol i said this near the beginning of the thread & got a bunch of dudes mad at me NO ITS ACTUALLY SKATER CULTURE U N00B

D-40, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not too interested in mounting a vigorous defense of OF. it's obv offensive and reprehensible music. it's not for everybody. I mean, I wouldn't bother trying to convince a police officer that "fuck tha police" is an awesome song. I can talk about what I get out of OF tho.

prolly the best summation of OF's nihilist outlook is hodgy's verse on "sandwitches", in which he tells his mother to suck his dick, denounces the church, calls god a cancer, and asks to be killed with a chainsaw before professing his affiliation with satan and the internet. it's sexist, irreverent, blasphemous, juvenile, and funny. the verse below, in fact a lot of OF material, is about disconnection and hate, the splenetic rage of sons growing up without fathers in a godless world. as a son who grew up without a father, and one who's trying to be a good father to his own son, I believe there is some catharsis, and yes, morality, to be gleaned from the spectacle.

my love is gone for you, mommy, you could ride in hearses
I'm sick in the brain, dumb bitch, can you nurse this?
you told me life would never, ever, ever get this perfect
then you smoke a jay of weed and take his kids to the churches
fuck church, they singin' and the shit ain't even worth it
in the choir, whores and liars, scumbags in the dirt, bitch
you told me god was the answer, when I ask him for shit
I get no answer, so god is the cancer
I'm stuck in triangles, lookin' for my angel
kill me with a chainsaw, and let my balls dangle
triple six is my number, you can get it off my tumblr

hodgy doesn't bother to finish the last quatrain. the music drops out and he sniggers, cuz that's what ppl do after they tell a rude joke.

scott seward, Friday, 20 May 2011 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

I was stuck in a group with young (19ish) relatives of a friend at Lollapalooza a couple years ago and they were totally of that 4chan mindset contenderizer is talking about. They were walking around the grounds with swastikas drawn in pen on their chests and loudly letting every female know how bad they wanted to "fuck (their) tight pooper(s)". Our mutual acquantaince went off on them several times about how abhorrent their behavior was, but they just did NOT understand why. We were just "gay fags" that didn't "understand" "humor".
