I always do
― oh! me so brodie (Edward III), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)
I was about to make a post that, if someone else made it (besides maybe nabisco or lilsoulbrother), I would have thrown a fit, so I deleted it.
But anyway these guys are a more talented iteration of Insane Clown Posse.

nerds are the most misogynist of all usually, hit "off topic" boards on video game forums sometime...or don't actually

so you can see why a more talented iteration of juggalos love them
― da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)
I genuinely think a lot of Tyler's misogynistic shit is down to his basic lack of experience with women. Maybe once he meets a nice girl he'll settle down a bit.
― Number None, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)
or a nice boy
― crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
I'm sure some of this stuff is really good but can't listen right now because I forgot my headphones today. Anyway, I never dismissed them entirely although my gut instinct is to write them all off in a guilty by association sort of way while fully recognizing that's neither rational nor fair.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:49 (fifteen years ago)
there's no shame in a cost-benefit analysis, esp when, as noted, the very first clip forks put up was rife with homophobic shit
― da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)
Its kinda interesting to step back and view the arc of this thread from a distance.

Yes and no. Yes, I can see why cleverer invocation of that type of imagery would have wider appeal, but no I can't see how removing the intentionally ridiculous filter on top of all of the awful shit being said would make anyone want to listen to or identify with it.
Not that ICP is dripping with irony or anything, but there is a very easy out for the taking if you want to paint them as a slightly-less-than-serious group, which is that they paint themselves in clown makeup and call themselves representatives of the Dark Carnival. Tyler is an odious little shit in a hoodie having fantasies about raping and killing you; it's a bigger stretch to put ironic distance into that.
E: I would recommend "Novacane" by Frank Ocean and "Flashlight" by Sid the Kid; both are songs, neither is gross and rapey and both are really, really good. (Whether they are good enough to purchase, putting some money into the pockets of those less... redeemable, for lack of a better word, is up to you.)
― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)
You can't purchase either of them so the point is somewhat moot
― Number None, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)
WIN-WIN

― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)
hahaha, godwin's law means i'm done here
I'm pretty sure skrewdriver was already invoked way upthread. It's funny though how people want to equate this with Elvis wiggling his hips and Alice Cooper singing about dead babies, and not the bigotry and hate that it is.
― unmetalled world (wk), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)
Who is doing that kind of equating?
― 'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)
Shakey Mo ("c'mon dude how many times do you have to see this play out? Alice Cooper, the Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, NWA/Cube, Ice-T - all unforgivably offensive/transgressive/dangerous in their day, now lauded as upstanding citizens that made groundbreaking work"), who probably shouldn't be mistaken for an actual fan of OF.
― da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)
also Greg Kot:
http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2011/05/album-review-tyler-the-creator-goblin.html
Transgression is crucial to pop culture. It defines the outer edge, the forbidden zone, from Elvis Presley’s censored pelvis and Eminem’s revenge fantasies to the Rolling Stones’ black-and-blue misogyny and Marilyn Manson’s fascist send-ups. And now, in a world where “American Idol” sanitizes future chart-toppers, there is the boyish hip-hop crew Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All lying in ambush.
― da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
Elvis wiggling his hips and Alice Cooper singing about dead babies, and not the bigotry and hate that it is
outraged reactions (which is what my post was referring to) are all basically the same - content provoking that reaction was not all uniform, duh
xp
― rap's proud hateful history (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:09 (fifteen years ago)
uh apologies re: the verb tenses there
My outraged reaction at getting the wrong sandwich at Subway is not the same outraged reaction you'd hear from me if Domo Genesis calls me faggot in the checkout lane.
― ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)
um right but those are demonstrably different sets of outrage. the subset of "outrage at performer doing offensive things" encompasses all the people I mentioned, that's all I was getting at. They come from a similar "this form of entertainment is not acceptable in our society" place.
― rap's proud hateful history (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
um right but those are demonstrably different sets of outrage. the subset of "outrage at performer doing offensive things" encompasses all the people I mentioned, that's all I was getting at.
This is a contradiction!
― ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)
I meant that you're being outraged about your sandwich does not have anything to do with being outraged about offensive entertainment
― rap's proud hateful history (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
The kind of outrage provoked by Elvis and Twisted Sister and Alice Cooper is not at all what OF inspires, unless you want to collapse it into a facile conclusion like, "Well, they did and said shit that pissed off white people."
― ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:16 (fifteen years ago)
For example the set OUTRAGE includes the subsets SANDWICH RAGE and OFFENSIVE ENTERTAINMENT RAGE but SANDWICH RAGE and OFFENSIVE ENTERTAINMENT RAGE are still different subsets. let me draw a graph...

unless you want to collapse it into a facile conclusion like, "Well, they did and said shit that pissed off white people."
I guess I do. In a lot of ways, moralizing about how a form of entertainment is bad for society all sounds the same to me.
― rap's proud hateful history (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:21 (fifteen years ago)
I'm pretty sure that's not true, or if it is can I interest you in being a backer for my new "bring back public hangings" campaign

there's a co-worker who came to a brainstorming meeting and said there was this crazy guy Tyler that's getting a lot of buzz for going on Jimmy Fallon with garden gnomes and maybe we could do a top ten wacky Tyler things. I let him know Tyler's antics went FAR beyond garden gnomes and other wacky TV props, an hour later the poor guy came across the Tiger Beatdown essay and announced his mortification.
― da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
you should TOTALLY do a top ten wacky Tyler things, but do it in the bitterest, most sarcastic voice possible and go through all of his awful bullshit, culminating in the Sara tweet at #2 and the account from his live show at #1
