Man is this what ILM is always like? Now I know why I usually keep my posts here to, "Uhhhh, I like songs.". ;p

lol yes

and i don't disagree with anything you just said! but dismissing anything this collection of musicians do as "hate music" based on one youtube watched is where i'm in disagreement with you. Not that you have to feel obliged to learn the canon! or even that you should! just that it's worth noting that there are some worthwhile tracks.
and it's been a long time since anyone posted them. here's one now.

Isn't Tyler 20 now?

No idea, there just seemed to be a lot of stuff upthread about how teenage boys say dumb shit, and how they need an outlet for their fucked up feelings, etc. Which may be true, but does the New Yorker need to devote 8000 words to that stuff?

unmetalled world (wk), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

xp: I hate this beat a lot

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

paradoxically I like the rapping a lot

this is like the exact opposite of how I usually react to music

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

I hate how he pronounced RUFFFOOOLS.

a) who's done this and b) isn't it the responsibility of fans to make the argument that this stuff is worthwhile when its so superficially, blatantly toxic, rather than pull the usual whines about hypocrisy and rap's proud hateful history. This isn't Common being maligned by Fox News, here. There's no agenda on the part of the people grossed out by the stuff that's so blatantly gross.

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

okay the beat on "Loco" is synced so poorly it's distracting
last one is unambiguously the most enjoyable, yes because of "dope Dilla beat"

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

(still, my favorite thing I've heard related to these guys is "Novacane")

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

a) E kinda did, no shots fired
b) hi, i'm posting songs that i like by the collective that are not "superficially blatantly toxic"

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

I think the unanswerable question here is "are their 'acceptable' songs good enough to offset the degree to which you react negatively to their 'unacceptable' songs?"

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

even in that grocery store one there are a bunch of faggots and gay stuff thrown around

Blink 187um (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

"Flashlight" is super dope on first listen!

so basically I want them to sing and not rap, lol

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyYW67Gj4EA
djp: that's a uniquely personal question isn't it?

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

hence "unanswerable"

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

part of the thing is that there's a lot of "them" and they have different styles and tyler is dictating the overall sound in some ways and he's likely the most misogynistic/homophobic/horrorcorish of the collective and absolutely getting the most attention right now
so everybody's getting tarred with the same brush even though frank ocean couldn't be much further from that content.

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

ah, i read "unanswerable" as "unanswered" so yeah i agree.

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

lol Forks I really don't think I said anything like that and I'm near certain I didn't use the term "hate music".

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

Oh maybe last night I did but I was just angry and admitted as much.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

yeah okay basically I just hate Tyler

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

(lol "just")

This feels a little bit like "sure the lead singer is a nazi, but the bass player isn't, so it's okay".

I was about to make a post that, if someone else made it (besides maybe nabisco or lilsoulbrother), I would have thrown a fit, so I deleted it.

But anyway these guys are a more talented iteration of Insane Clown Posse.

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

nerds are the most misogynist of all usually, hit "off topic" boards on video game forums sometime...or don't actually

so you can see why a more talented iteration of juggalos love them

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

I genuinely think a lot of Tyler's misogynistic shit is down to his basic lack of experience with women. Maybe once he meets a nice girl he'll settle down a bit.

Number None, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

or a nice boy

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure some of this stuff is really good but can't listen right now because I forgot my headphones today. Anyway, I never dismissed them entirely although my gut instinct is to write them all off in a guilty by association sort of way while fully recognizing that's neither rational nor fair.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

there's no shame in a cost-benefit analysis, esp when, as noted, the very first clip forks put up was rife with homophobic shit

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

Its kinda interesting to step back and view the arc of this thread from a distance.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yes and no. Yes, I can see why cleverer invocation of that type of imagery would have wider appeal, but no I can't see how removing the intentionally ridiculous filter on top of all of the awful shit being said would make anyone want to listen to or identify with it.

Not that ICP is dripping with irony or anything, but there is a very easy out for the taking if you want to paint them as a slightly-less-than-serious group, which is that they paint themselves in clown makeup and call themselves representatives of the Dark Carnival. Tyler is an odious little shit in a hoodie having fantasies about raping and killing you; it's a bigger stretch to put ironic distance into that.

E: I would recommend "Novacane" by Frank Ocean and "Flashlight" by Sid the Kid; both are songs, neither is gross and rapey and both are really, really good. (Whether they are good enough to purchase, putting some money into the pockets of those less... redeemable, for lack of a better word, is up to you.)

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

You can't purchase either of them so the point is somewhat moot

Number None, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

WIN-WIN

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure skrewdriver was already invoked way upthread. It's funny though how people want to equate this with Elvis wiggling his hips and Alice Cooper singing about dead babies, and not the bigotry and hate that it is.

unmetalled world (wk), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Who is doing that kind of equating?

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 20 May 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Shakey Mo ("c'mon dude how many times do you have to see this play out? Alice Cooper, the Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, NWA/Cube, Ice-T - all unforgivably offensive/transgressive/dangerous in their day, now lauded as upstanding citizens that made groundbreaking work"), who probably shouldn't be mistaken for an actual fan of OF.

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

also Greg Kot:

http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2011/05/album-review-tyler-the-creator-goblin.html

Transgression is crucial to pop culture. It defines the outer edge, the forbidden zone, from Elvis Presley’s censored pelvis and Eminem’s revenge fantasies to the Rolling Stones’ black-and-blue misogyny and Marilyn Manson’s fascist send-ups. And now, in a world where “American Idol” sanitizes future chart-toppers, there is the boyish hip-hop crew Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All lying in ambush.

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

Elvis wiggling his hips and Alice Cooper singing about dead babies, and not the bigotry and hate that it is

outraged reactions (which is what my post was referring to) are all basically the same - content provoking that reaction was not all uniform, duh

xp
