and in retrospect "cop killer" is probably unlistenable, yes. i should go try it again.
I just wrote about Body Count on Monday. They're better than you remember.

did you think i was bragging?
I thought you were responding to "why do enthusiasts give OF a pass" with the usual tangent of "there is a long history of people saying bad things that I've let pass" that I had specifically called out as being sad in the sentence you were responding to. Just because you like one group that says toxic shit doesn't mean you will or have to LIKE another.

It's the way the lyrics are written and the level of violence and particular imagery used that makes this seem a hell of a lot worse than anything I can remember hearing recently.

forks I'm sorry if your this-shit-was-over-ten-years-ago postmodern reading of the narrative voice is predictable, but it is ridiculously predictable. that "no connection between art and the real world" style of reading only survives in discussions like these, elsewhere it's rightly thought of as a little embarrassing, and its motions aren't exactly hard to predict. it is a reading strategy that absolves the reader of assigning weight to texts, and its hour passed quite some time ago.

E, maybe? but I'm not willing to buy into "if I had worked at a domestic abuse shelter i would feel differently" but for a host of reasons that i'm absolutely not going to get into here that go a bit further than "some of my best friends were abuse victims" i don't think it's a matter of my lack of exposure to people who have had to live the harsh reality of the outcomes of this sort of thinking.
― crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 16:57 (fifteen years ago)
um, I think E meant "if you had been abused you might feel differently"
probably should be emphasis on "might"
― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 16:59 (fifteen years ago)
aero, my point was that what you assumed was my point wasn't my point? not that you aren't a bright guy and everything but presuming you know where i'm going before i say it means there's no point in talking at all.

man this moves fast. I um wasn't really referring to you Dan fwiw

Man is this what ILM is always like? Now I know why I usually keep my posts here to, "Uhhhh, I like songs.". ;p
I get that some people don't find this as troublesome other others and that's true about tons of stuff. I like loads of stuff that a lot of people would be offended by. I was just trying to explain that I understand why people do find it troublesome and that I think it at least deserves some thought (rather than just tuning it out) because we're talking about something that is really fucking prevalent - probably a lot more so than many people realize. Although, I guess now that I've read a lot more of the thread this sort of exactly what Reddening said a couple days ago albeit much more eloquently.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
ICP releases their own records though right? While as Sara pointed out, OF is getting the support of a whole indie rock industry that would react differently if they were a racist band. Which makes the "boys will be boys" and "teenagers will be teenagers" justifications such bullshit, because there are adults releasing their records, booking their shows, and giving them press. And it's not a free speech issue, they can record whatever they want. It's just, does shit like that really need to be taking up time, space, and energy from other artists who aren't assholes?
― unmetalled world (wk), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

and i don't disagree with anything you just said! but dismissing anything this collection of musicians do as "hate music" based on one youtube watched is where i'm in disagreement with you. Not that you have to feel obliged to learn the canon! or even that you should! just that it's worth noting that there are some worthwhile tracks.and it's been a long time since anyone posted them. here's one now.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga7qJ4_KdB4
― crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:13 (fifteen years ago)
No idea, there just seemed to be a lot of stuff upthread about how teenage boys say dumb shit, and how they need an outlet for their fucked up feelings, etc. Which may be true, but does the New Yorker need to devote 8000 words to that stuff?

but dismissing anything this collection of musicians do as "hate music" based on one youtube watched is where i'm in disagreement with you.
a) who's done this and b) isn't it the responsibility of fans to make the argument that this stuff is worthwhile when its so superficially, blatantly toxic, rather than pull the usual whines about hypocrisy and rap's proud hateful history. This isn't Common being maligned by Fox News, here. There's no agenda on the part of the people grossed out by the stuff that's so blatantly gross.
― da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
okay the beat on "Loco" is synced so poorly it's distractinglast one is unambiguously the most enjoyable, yes because of "dope Dilla beat"

I think the unanswerable question here is "are their 'acceptable' songs good enough to offset the degree to which you react negatively to their 'unacceptable' songs?"

hence "unanswerable"
― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
part of the thing is that there's a lot of "them" and they have different styles and tyler is dictating the overall sound in some ways and he's likely the most misogynistic/homophobic/horrorcorish of the collective and absolutely getting the most attention right nowso everybody's getting tarred with the same brush even though frank ocean couldn't be much further from that content.
― crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)
ah, i read "unanswerable" as "unanswered" so yeah i agree.
lol Forks I really don't think I said anything like that and I'm near certain I didn't use the term "hate music".
