and i still do like listening to these guys? the mix that ed put up about three billion years ago (or two months, i forget which) was great and had an amazing minimum of beat that bitch with a bat style lyrics, it was all really good stuff. Bastard is an interesting if quick burning album. Earl is a really solid debut.
and not to play the "EVERYBODY'S DOIN IT" card, but remember the GLAAD approved guy who is calling his album "I'm Gay"?

^he's saying a lot of the same shit as odd future he's just being even more gonzo and that buys him a pass somehow?

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

tyler's a good producer imo

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

right but illegally downloading them and then writing articles and talking about them online still makes these guys more famous

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

so more people will illegally download their music DO U C

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i wonder if there's any good example of excitement about this group's music that predate any serious controversy about their lyrical content, if only you could scroll up to the first few hundred posts of oh wait THIS THREAD

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

tbh if they end up famous for being such assholes that no one paid for their music, I will lol

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

honestly it's been a long time since I've heard people praise OF, rather than just defend their 1st amendment rights or whatever

This is bc the only rap album they've dropped in the past 6 months is mostly awful and contains little worth praising.

jho'sh? "ice cr?m" jackson (The Reverend), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

anybody wanna praise these guys with words more evocative than great, interesting and good? preferably without a tangential complaint about hypocrisy?

xpost haha some dude i thought this was one of those post-youtube-say-'this is good' threads initially

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

tbh if they end up famous for being such assholes that no one paid for their music, I will lol

well they have a top ten album now and uhh people still buy Chris Brown's records!

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:06 (fifteen years ago)

also if you think i'm going to click "see all messages (5880 of them) on this thread" you are sorely mistaken

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't say it was a very likely lol

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

fair enough, but don't ask to have something pointed out right below your nose and then go LOL TLDR (xpost)

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

you might want to pick up this week's new yorker?

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

i hear there's a piece in there.

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

all anyone quotes from that is how earl's mom writes his e-mails for him and the gross shit tyler did at concerts

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

Ayo croup, you know you can break threads into 50-post chunks by pressing "permalink" on the last post before the fold, right? Useful shit imo.

jho'sh? "ice cr?m" jackson (The Reverend), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

cool, i'mma go see if people did more than post youtubes, say "swag" and defend tyler's free speech

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

xp so illegally download the latest issue of the new yorker
god do i have to do everything around here

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

Remember when 50K albums would've been kind of a joke?
These days it puts you on a par with massive artists like, say Jay Park

i'm assuming you're all fans

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

wait did the new yorker resort to rape-jokes to get readership too

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

between WINNING! and FREE EARL SWEATSHIRT! i can completely understand the need for some raging gay-friendly and women-friendly manifestos. even raging tweets. i still blame the internet. for everything. ever.

I don't think it fixes the problem of there being nearly 6000 msgs to read

sternly worded bookmarks do

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

so what I got from the first part of the thread was (and thanks for the permalink tip - that rules), if I'm gonna listen to one group of young rappers who make a lot of rape jokes this year, it should be odd future, who have managed to bridge the gap between anticon and wiz khalifa. fair enough.

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

you read really fast

my prediction is that tyler is smart and wants to make money and be on t.v. and he's gonna go the eminem route and produce stuff for other people and his own stuff will get increasingly less chaotic and extreme. and he will star in a csi spin-off in ten years. he got noticed with the stuff he's doing now and that's the first step. he has a definite plan in that interview above.

scott seward, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

or he could be a special guest at a gathering of the juggalos in 2 years. who can say?

scott seward, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

i'm glad to see we solved tyler tonight. good work everybody!

contenderizer, Friday, 20 May 2011 07:20 (fifteen years ago)

"go the eminem route and produce stuff for other people and his own stuff will get increasingly less chaotic and extreme"

not sure this is an accurate summation of em's career path

yes, forks, there are asian artists who can sell lots of records in asia and yet we in america have never heard of him. your point?

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 11:14 (fifteen years ago)

@jordan, who said anything about his violent past making it ' ok'? it's never 'ok'

D-40, Friday, 20 May 2011 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, pointing out that it's a word used within a particular violent subculture like the bloods street gang is an explanation of his likely reasoning not a defense of it

D-40, Friday, 20 May 2011 12:35 (fifteen years ago)

Reading my argument like that was some whiney shit btw...considering how much we've talked about this stuff i'm surprised you'd think I was saying otherwise

jaymc, Friday, 20 May 2011 12:38 (fifteen years ago)

my point was that tyler is not quite as powerful/influential outside of a tiny stripe of world we happen to allow in and that we're overstating his fanbase/appeal/impact
also that we should talk more about kpop on this thread

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 12:40 (fifteen years ago)

Love the Tiger Beatdown thread. Not only is Sady Doyle's piece brilliantly written but the comments are smart and diverse too. I like the honesty of this response:

Here is my issue: I can’t bring myself to really disagree with any parts of this post but…I still like them. The lyrics, the behavior, all of it is problematic. Beyond that…it is bad. But what now? What do we do with Tyler and with Odd Future? What are we asking for? For these hip young white indie music bloggers to say that this shit is fucked up? I don’t think you’d be hard pressed to get people to admit that. Your problem seems to be that they won’t outright condemn all artistic production that comes from Odd Future and discard all praise. What is your prescription for moving forward? I’m a mid 20s woman of color in college studying feminist theory. I am, in fact, one of these people with their “asses on the line.” I grew up on Eminem. I like Odd Future. I don’t know. I can’t bring myself to defend them but I also like them!

I keep thinking of Chris Rock's line: "I love hip hop but I'm tired of defending it."

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Friday, 20 May 2011 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

It'd be cool if OF enthusiasts could cop to letting some noxious shit pass and describe their personal reason for doing so (again, people allegedly ENJOY this group), rather than doing the "hey LOTS of art is toxic" weave or the "hey 1st amendment, what are you tipper gore" dodge. Those are just ways to get out of feeling like a douche for publicly praising douchey shit. Yeah, everybody listens to and enjoys stuff that would make other people uncomfortable, but if you're a writer that takes part in the Top 10 Shit Everyone Should Be Listening To world, consider perspectives outside your own before raving, or learn how to write something subjective and self-examining without pulling some defensive "how dare you tell me I'm a bad person for promoting bad things" crap. A subculture used to letting this shit slide (or, dare I say, getting off on the vicarious brutality) got excited enough about a new act that people who weren't caught wind of it and said "woah, you're letting some gross shit slide." Responding with "what d'ya want, for us to call the cops?" or "pssh, read a history book, the world's been doing this since forever" is just sad and lame. If the crap you're getting for liking abusive shit is making you feel bad or enjoy your abusive shit less, boo fucking hoo. Sorry someone made you think harder.

ill take a stab at it! alright one of the things that first attracted be to OF besides what I found to be generally good rapping were songs like "epar" which has noxious subject matter but was a clinic in storytelling or joints like "assmilk" or the one in the checkout line from domo's album which were genuinely funny and infectiously fun. in a few ways, Tyler's music is markedly different (certainly in mood) from the rest of OF and I still think guys like Mike G & hodgy retain a lot of the elements that made me "actually enjoy" OF in the first place.

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

goddamn this thread moves fast, lots of debate. i dont want to get heavily involved here (got clowned last time i spoke up) but a couple things: (1) i've played the album 3-4 times, pretty much think "yonkers" and "sandwitches" are the two big keepers from the record. which means i can just dial up the youtubes here and there, probably dont need the whole album—lots of filler. (2) regarding all the controversy on whether Goblin (and OF) have any merit in general, Tyler tweeted this the other day and it kinda describes his aesthetic better than anyone else has managed to do. whether that's something that you find "interesting" is up to you i guess. me, i'll take "yonkers" (great video too!) and leave the rest. didn't like Bastard either tbh.

tyler is a smart, creative guy who has and can go on to make some really great music. but he is also an obnoxious twat and the more people that tell him this the better imo.

all the way bernt up (tpp), Friday, 20 May 2011 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

also I think tons of OF enthusiasts (both on this board and off) have been "defending tyler on first amendment grounds" bcuz the conversation has been driven by a moral backlash against his rise in popularity. it's very rarely been a musical debate & it's also not an album where it seems like ppls opinions can be changed

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 14:23 (fifteen years ago)

if you're a writer that takes part in the Top 10 Shit Everyone Should Be Listening To world

imo this is key - i realise that not everyone has to have this perspective, but for anyone who's a critic or working in the industry, it's not just about whether to enjoy this, it's about promoting and disseminating it too - long ago i basically reconciled my enjoyment of dancehall by homophobic artists by saying i'd never support those artists with promotion or £££.

not saying any kind of line like that is necessary at all - like i've stated repeatedly, i like plenty of music with dodgy content - but what's irked most is the apparent lack of self-awareness & self-questioning before proceeding full steam ahead with the "OMG FUTURE OF MUSIC" slobbering (that oddly hasn't accrued to many other hip-hop acts?)

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Friday, 20 May 2011 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

if i do pazz&jop this year goblin won't be on my list. i like it, but i don't think its great. it is too long and meandering. but i do like the sound. thats why i liked this stuff in the first place. plus, i think i was just surprised that i did like it cuz i hate most indie/undie/internet shit.
