but seriously do people seriously think that OF intends for women or queer folk to enjoy their lyrics? or that they expect them to not be turned off by them? that's a p big load of naivete and privilege

more fish for kunta (zachlyon), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

no, i just think it's worse to be an actual sexist/homophobe than a troll.

but don't worry, i'm actually going to stop listening to this group, and a lot of other music besides now.

i'm sorry if i come off as a bit of a nob, or naive, or whatever.
but i really hope you're not comparing me to him. i think i'd have to end myself.

OF is intended for the enjoyment of nihilists of all races, sexes, colors, creeds, and sexual preferences

oh! me so brodie (Edward III), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

fwiw (that is, nothing), i have a feeling that OF's homophobia is couched more in 4chan boys-being-boys trollery and while it's no doubt offensive, i don't get the feeling that it's as...genuine as the misogyny. i wouldn't expect anyone to be "well alright then!" about that obv, but to me the rape-y stuff seems to spring from a very different, uglier place than the homophobic stuff. only in that (from the songs i've listened to) they actually take the time to dig into some horrific misogynist imagery/violence, and they "limit" their homophobia to throwing around (sneering) the word "faggot." obv some very fine hair-splitting, and not a defense of any kind imo, but that's the impression i get.

i realize that this doesn't (shouldn't) have any bearing on how a person responds to OF, just doing some armchair exegesis

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

how nihilistic does a minority have to be to have no problem with being called slurs by the kind of people who have traditionally oppressed people like them? are OF bros so totally chill that they'd be fine with a white person yelling the N-word at them?

and tbh this in a way kinda sums everything up imo. even if EIII was bein flip, it rings true to me: ppl of all kinds can go "well they say what they say, i'll just like the parts i like and skip/detest/rmde@ the stuff i don't". just as ppl of all kinds can say "that's all well and good but when we reward ppl for broadcasting despicable attitudes, we're part of the problem."

there's room for both

xp some dude i think actually there's probably a situation where yes, OF bros might think it's funny to see a white guy dropping the n-word in a fuiud i'm just challoping kind of way

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean maybe they would, i kind of was genuinely asking that question because i don't know the answer

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

if only because tyler would recognize that being confronted by such a thing (VICE GENERATION POST-RACIAL LOLZ) would force him to go "hey wait" or just ride the nihilist bandwagon into the sunset that will eventually go nova and kill us all anyway

i'm not about to try & dig this up but i'm pretty sure that some of OF have said in interviews that they think the n-word is passé

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 03:28 (fifteen years ago)

he seems self-aware just enough to recognize that there's a way that, say, ilxors of days gone by might make a n-word joke that was "obviously" coming from a place of ~irony~ and trolling and not a place of hate. or at least not presented in such a way that would require him to step outside of trollsville

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:29 (fifteen years ago)

tyler said on his formspring that he actually thinks it's funny when white ppl say it.

x-post

if tyler is ok with it does that mean it should be ok for white people to yell it at all black people

i don't get the point of this line of discussion (i might just be behind)

like i can't say "i'm totally cool with random people coming up to me and punching me in the face, therefore i should be allowed to punch anyone in the face. hey, don't get angry that i punched you, you can punch me back"

more fish for kunta (zachlyon), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:31 (fifteen years ago)

this is not surprising to me. guessing, too, weirdly, that this might be because they're young enough that they've never encountered someone, a stranger, actually point it in their direction in a very hateful and personal way? i don't know this, of course. but it seems entirely possible that to them it's just a word that ~could~ be directed at them hatefully, but that in their experience is just some word that once held venom, and doesn't anymore.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

ok that's what i thought. just felt like it was veering towards "well if one [marginalized person/my one black friend] is ok with it they should all be"

which is in line with the whole "they have a lesbian in the group, stop bitching about how you feel you screechy lesbians"

i feel like i can anticipate their response pretty easily, which is that they would play it off/not let u see them get shook by it... pro trolls cant let people know that they have buttons that can be pushed... its face 101

"not letting anything shake you" is as much a function of adolescence as it is being a pro troll

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

a key issue here is that they chose to make this kind of stuff central to their music & will reap the rewards / punishments appropriately

like, i *still* blows my mind that ppl are trying to say in this thread that someone who is an 'actual' homophobe is somehow different when it comes to music. dj quik drops a couple 'faggots,' & they're inexcusable & gross me out, but at the end of the day his music isnt about that stuff, that it isnt central to his persona or his music, its an unfortunate choice of hateful language from someone who came out of a very violent world

w/ these guys, im sorry, but i dont see it as being 'more excusable' because they dont 'mean it' as much as he does. fact is, its such a small part of his output & however intense his homophobia supposedly is relative to theirs (& i have trouble believing that theirs is always 100% ironic trolling) its still not a dominant part of his music

D-40, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

depends how its used too... like if i went kramer on em, all screamin and stuff, that would open me up for a counter-troll b/c id obviously be angry/worked up about it... but if its dropped in some ice cold casual way that might call for them to calibrate how they feel about it on-the-spot

"not letting anything shake you" is as much a function of adolescence as it is being a pro troll

lol is that why teens are always pissed idiots lashing at at shit... cuz they dont want to seem shaken by anything

anime hitler, the futanari führer (Princess TamTam), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:40 (fifteen years ago)

you also realize that coming from a violent world doesn't make it any more okay to say "faggot"

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

tamtam i don't get your insinuation -- are teens world renowned for saying to each other "hey, that really hurt my feelings. i would appreciate it if you didn't use that word."

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

no but they do go FUCK YOU MAN *shoves a dude*

anime hitler, the futanari führer (Princess TamTam), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

TamTam do your posts itt indicate some kind of change of heart regarding your cankles-era use of some pretty harsh terms or what

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:45 (fifteen years ago)

so I haven't read all 5860 posts and maybe (probably) this has already been discussed, but how much of their relative fame is due to the ~controversy~ vs. them being particularly good at what they do?

like if these guys were the same minus the homophobia and rape jokes, would this thread even exist?

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:45 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not a fan but i'd say they'd probably be at least in the ballpark of being as famous w/o that stuff, since a lot of people seemed pretty excited about them for other reasons before the endless thinkpiece circlejerk made the "controversy" the story

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:47 (fifteen years ago)

like I'm bothered by the rape jokes but the fact that it seems like they're getting successful *due to* rape jokes bothers me more

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think that's the case

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

what were those non-hate related reasons people were excited about OF again? honestly it's been a long time since I've heard people praise OF, rather than just defend their 1st amendment rights or whatever

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

was it something about tumblr, or something about them being a cut above the average nihilist rap crew?

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

It seems like the debate ends at "and that's why it's ok to like Odd Future" now, rather than "and that's why I like them"

da croupier, Friday, 20 May 2011 03:54 (fifteen years ago)

threads gotten weird and stuff honestly
anyways look there's a real easy out here that no one is espousing that makes a lot of sense which is to illegally download goblin
it's a steal this book win/win situation: if you buy into the nihilist rhetoric, you're saying fuck the man to an indie label and just dickin' around which is what would tyler do (wwwtd)
if you're offended by his language and subject matter, he doesn't profit in any way and you're better informed
if you don't like it, it's probably not for you
either way if you're a music critic, there's at least 5000 words to be written and a big market for it at the moment

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:56 (fifteen years ago)

and i still do like listening to these guys? the mix that ed put up about three billion years ago (or two months, i forget which) was great and had an amazing minimum of beat that bitch with a bat style lyrics, it was all really good stuff. Bastard is an interesting if quick burning album. Earl is a really solid debut.
and not to play the "EVERYBODY'S DOIN IT" card, but remember the GLAAD approved guy who is calling his album "I'm Gay"?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcWixqy9Uqk
^he's saying a lot of the same shit as odd future he's just being even more gonzo and that buys him a pass somehow?

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

tyler's a good producer imo

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

right but illegally downloading them and then writing articles and talking about them online still makes these guys more famous

iatee, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

so more people will illegally download their music DO U C

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i wonder if there's any good example of excitement about this group's music that predate any serious controversy about their lyrical content, if only you could scroll up to the first few hundred posts of oh wait THIS THREAD

some dude, Friday, 20 May 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

tbh if they end up famous for being such assholes that no one paid for their music, I will lol

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

honestly it's been a long time since I've heard people praise OF, rather than just defend their 1st amendment rights or whatever

This is bc the only rap album they've dropped in the past 6 months is mostly awful and contains little worth praising.

jho'sh? "ice cr?m" jackson (The Reverend), Friday, 20 May 2011 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

anybody wanna praise these guys with words more evocative than great, interesting and good? preferably without a tangential complaint about hypocrisy?

xpost haha some dude i thought this was one of those post-youtube-say-'this is good' threads initially
