I haven't read this thread. This is actually the first time I've opened it and I only skimmed over today's discussion.
I can't really because I just googled the lyrics to one song and literally couldn't finish reading the whole thing. I don't have that sort of reaction to stuff like this often.
Just curious - have any female posters actually weighed in on this?
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 01:25 (fifteen years ago)
reddening is female iirc
― D-40, Friday, 20 May 2011 01:26 (fifteen years ago)
so that means that 50% of film's female posters have weighed in?
― J0rdan S., Friday, 20 May 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

― cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 20 May 2011 01:28 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't realize that! Ctrl F "reddening". Not that I'm sure the rest of you don't have some interesting things to say. I just honestly had no idea what this thread/group etc. was about until tonight and I just think it's interesting that there's so many posts about it and only one woman posting. I realize ILM is heavily male but still. It's always pretty interesting to me when that happens.
Fuck these idiots btw. Like I said I couldn't even get through one song and don't plan on reading anymore but anyone that knows me even a little bit here should know that I'm not easily offended and pretty laid back. I have, however, been sexually assaulted as have more of my friends than I can count on my fingers and maybe that makes me a little sensitive about the issue but uhhhhh whatever song I happened to google was flat out offensive and violent and awful and fuck anyone who can't plainly see why that's really awful and upsetting.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 01:37 (fifteen years ago)
And if nobody actually said anything to that effect then I apologize for suggesting they may have. I may have gotten a little over-excited for just having skimmed the thread but there are so many posts. You've been busy.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 20 May 2011 01:39 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think anyone has said they're not offensive - clearly they are deliberately trying to sicken and offend ppl
prolly nobody would care except they're so good at it, and now they are top 10 billboard artists
hence the endless thread

I don't think anyone who listens to OF is without conflicted feelings about it. everybody goes through a cost/benefit analysis when it comes to offensive music, whether it's the mentors, GG allin, the geto boys, NWA, etc. a number of ppl in this thread are still trying to figure out where they stand in regards to OF.
tonight I'm alternating between celebrating the impending approval of civil unions in my state (passed the house, should clear senate), and posting defenses of homophobic rappers. eh, life.
― oh! me so brodie (Edward III), Friday, 20 May 2011 02:32 (fifteen years ago)
does anybody really think they're homophobic, though? or just some really nasty, button-pushing trolls?

because theres no way they couldnt be both
― D-40, Friday, 20 May 2011 02:36 (fifteen years ago)
EIII - Yeah, no, of course I realize that. I've obv done the same with several things I have liked/listened to over the years. As I said before this is a particularly sensitive issue for me and what I posted earlier was a gut reaction. That said, I can't see myself ever listening to or enjoying this no matter how great or talented they may be musically. Thanks for the link. Will read tho in some ways I wish curiosity hadn't gotten the better of me and led me to open this thread tonight. Oh well.

i dont understand why people keep posing this irrelevant question, because imo it doesnt matter at all whether or not they are - just like it doesnt matter whether or not they're pro-rape, either way they're still endorsing and perpetuating rape culture
ive only listened to like one song btw but i dont see why they couldnt be homophobes

I don't think anyone who listens to OF is without conflicted feelings about it.
even the people that go to their shows and chant things like "slut" and "show your titties"? i mean there's some weird assumption that because these guys and their fanbase are so ALT that there's no total dirtbags who are into this stuff with no inner conflict or irony.

garland grey actually wrote a really short but affecting blog entry about it. the url's gone cause he replaced his tumblr but i'm glad i reblogged it before it disappeared:
F-Word Separatist
garlandgrey:
I don’t want to read the work of people who use the word in a derogatory fashion. I don’t want to listen to their music, or watch their movies, or devote even a tiny sliver of my attention to anything they have ever done. If you reblog that shit, and the point of the reblog isn’t to push back against that shit, we’re done here.
Today I tried to listen to a song by a band I recently saw in concert. The name of the song was “Orange Juice” - I know a lot people that I really like who like this band so I’d just been exempting myself from listening to any of their music because I didn’t want to force any sort of mental confrontation with the material.
But, yeah. I’m giving major side eye to Odd Future shit on my dash. That whole verse that ends with that tossed off “Fucking F******” turned me off completely to the idea of the band, and removed any urge I had to find anything else about them. And instead of going about my day feeling happy with that decision, I kept interrogating myself for oversensitivity. But upon listening to it again, it comes off as vitriolic and cowardly. It feels like I keep getting messages from inside of this exciting, edgy Bouncy Castle called “Odd Future” and I can see my friends in there, having a blast, getting major lift, and I’m happy they’re happy, but I can also see the big “No F****** Allowed” sign on the outside, and I can’t ignore that.
So bounce away, valued friends and colleagues. I don’t begrudge you your fun, or think negatively about you, but I’m going to sit this one way the fuck out.
when you create something that makes people feel like they can't be a part of it based on their being queer or woman, that makes something homophobic/misogynist in my book.
― more fish for kunta (zachlyon), Friday, 20 May 2011 02:58 (fifteen years ago)
result >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> intention
but seriously do people seriously think that OF intends for women or queer folk to enjoy their lyrics? or that they expect them to not be turned off by them? that's a p big load of naivete and privilege
― more fish for kunta (zachlyon), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:01 (fifteen years ago)
no, i just think it's worse to be an actual sexist/homophobe than a troll.
but don't worry, i'm actually going to stop listening to this group, and a lot of other music besides now.

OF is intended for the enjoyment of nihilists of all races, sexes, colors, creeds, and sexual preferences
― oh! me so brodie (Edward III), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:15 (fifteen years ago)
fwiw (that is, nothing), i have a feeling that OF's homophobia is couched more in 4chan boys-being-boys trollery and while it's no doubt offensive, i don't get the feeling that it's as...genuine as the misogyny. i wouldn't expect anyone to be "well alright then!" about that obv, but to me the rape-y stuff seems to spring from a very different, uglier place than the homophobic stuff. only in that (from the songs i've listened to) they actually take the time to dig into some horrific misogynist imagery/violence, and they "limit" their homophobia to throwing around (sneering) the word "faggot." obv some very fine hair-splitting, and not a defense of any kind imo, but that's the impression i get.
i realize that this doesn't (shouldn't) have any bearing on how a person responds to OF, just doing some armchair exegesis
― cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Friday, 20 May 2011 03:17 (fifteen years ago)
how nihilistic does a minority have to be to have no problem with being called slurs by the kind of people who have traditionally oppressed people like them? are OF bros so totally chill that they'd be fine with a white person yelling the N-word at them?

and tbh this in a way kinda sums everything up imo. even if EIII was bein flip, it rings true to me: ppl of all kinds can go "well they say what they say, i'll just like the parts i like and skip/detest/rmde@ the stuff i don't". just as ppl of all kinds can say "that's all well and good but when we reward ppl for broadcasting despicable attitudes, we're part of the problem."
there's room for both
xp some dude i think actually there's probably a situation where yes, OF bros might think it's funny to see a white guy dropping the n-word in a fuiud i'm just challoping kind of way

if only because tyler would recognize that being confronted by such a thing (VICE GENERATION POST-RACIAL LOLZ) would force him to go "hey wait" or just ride the nihilist bandwagon into the sunset that will eventually go nova and kill us all anyway

he seems self-aware just enough to recognize that there's a way that, say, ilxors of days gone by might make a n-word joke that was "obviously" coming from a place of ~irony~ and trolling and not a place of hate. or at least not presented in such a way that would require him to step outside of trollsville

if tyler is ok with it does that mean it should be ok for white people to yell it at all black people
i don't get the point of this line of discussion (i might just be behind)
like i can't say "i'm totally cool with random people coming up to me and punching me in the face, therefore i should be allowed to punch anyone in the face. hey, don't get angry that i punched you, you can punch me back"
