you are a weird dude
― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:06 (fifteen years ago)
Shakey, because this is the first time you've mentioned Tegan & Sara, I'd say you're a homophobe. After all, you never say anything about them until they said something about Tyler. Please stop being a homophobe. Is it so much to ask?
― w of in the attic (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
i asked you the question shakey i can hit teegs up on twitter anytime i like if i want her perspective

I mean seriously Shakey - this stuff is getting a giant press push. are they supposed to go In Search Of Stuff That Hates Gay People or they're big ol' racists?
^ this
pop media have made a big deal about OF & tyler. they're in everybody's field of view, and naturally, people react. same thing happens constantly in politics. don't see this instance as specifically racist, though it does cast light on weird racial divisions in american society.

Health Inspector Shakey: "What's your point in telling me you got botulism at a McDonalds in Greenpoint? Didn't you see the conditions of that White Castle in HARLEM? Think you can stop the golden arches? Get out of your bubble! FAIL!"

― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:18 (fifteen years ago)
lol a) isn't the health inspector in this scenario GLAAD/Tegan & Sara, b) aren't they failing their job by focusing on just one act?
most importantly though, this kind of tactic really begs the question of what they're hoping to accomplish by making this public display of approbation. the health inspector would have the authority to just shut down the offending site (to carry out this analogy). But the end result of issuing these kinds of statements isn't the shutting down of Odd Future, it just enlarges their public profile (and feeds into their "we are going to offend you!" schtick)
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)
yo man you can close a mcdonalds but you can't stop mcdonalds, all you're doing is giving mcD's free publicity
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
Soooo... you are criticizing them for objecting to Tyler now, but also criticizing them for not objecting to Tyler earlier?
― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
(tbf I thought it was Tegan Sara's job to make music, not attack other musicians. GLAAD otoh, yeah it's their job to root out homophobia, correct me if I'm wrong)
also yr analogy is broken croup quit while yr behindxp
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)
i thought your job...wait, do you have one?
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)
I'm criticizing them for being counterproductive and narrowly focused
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:22 (fifteen years ago)
you should tell these women they're being counterproductive directly, that's your job
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:22 (fifteen years ago)
tbf I thought it was Tegan Sara's job to make music, not attack other musicians.
oh this is some outright bullshit
― I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:23 (fifteen years ago)
man Shakey will find as many ways as he can to say "shut up offended lesbian you don't get to express your opinion"

I'm hoping for a Fat Mike guest spot on the next Tyler mixtape when he covers "Creeping Out Sara".

"counterproductive" is always a great way that privileged people tell others to shut the fuck up & get on board
― w of in the attic (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:25 (fifteen years ago)
it's funny to think of shakey as being privileged
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)
i mean, i get it, but it just sounds funny
I prefer stfu, it sounds more official
― the first rule of debate club (Edward III), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not even on board with this band! I am just a hardcore free speech guy, what can I say. I'm not telling anybody to shut up. Tegan and Sara can say whatever the fuck they want. But let's not pretend like they're having the (I presume) desired adverse affect on OF.
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)
like, this is just bad tactics. you want to shut down homophobia, this is not the way to do it.
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)
whats your desired affect here, dude?
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)
i mean if you've got the good tactics a hardcore free speech guy would use, what are they
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:29 (fifteen years ago)
stfu da croupier, shakey's gonna tell us how to shut down homophobia

I hope it involves image macros

passive aggressive post-it notes on tyler's fridge
putting a character loosely based on tyler in an upcoming episode of glee, having him learn about homophobia and how word hurt and end the episode with him & the cast singing "being boring" by pet shop boys
― Blink 187um (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
fuck the half-stepping, just cast tyler in glee

I think there's a couple different issues at work here. One is shock value - OF is clearly an act that revels in doing things for shock value. If you want to rob something of it's shock value, the key is, duh, not to allow yourself to be shocked by it. Ignore it.
Now underneath the shock value is actual homophobia (which, frankly I don't really think OF are - at least not in the way that, say, 5 Percenters are), and dealing with that underlying issue requires stuff I'm sure GLAAD is hard at work on: legal protections, outreach, publicity, ie things that make it clear to homophobes that gay people are just like everyone else, deserving of the same level of respect, and that being gay is no big deal. Barring instances of specific incitement (ie, telling a crowd to kill someone at the show for being gay or something) I don't think getting into specific aesthetic criticisms of specific artists is really helpful in achieving these goals. It's too complex, and more often than not it just backfires and plays into the performers' hands. It's like when Vice interviewed those Nazi twin folk singer girls - regardless of the editors' intent, they just raised the band's profile.
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
but what if those nazi twin folk singer girls debuted at #5 on the billboard albums chart

kinda what i was trying to get at before is that this has been aimed at and written about by indie-land people and its shocking to them cuz all they listen to is sweater-vest music. they don't listen to rap that much. 20+ years of gross-out/super-violent rap has totally passed them by. until now apparently.
― scott seward, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)
woah what if odd future joined the 5 percent nation????
tyler's prodigious talents coupled with knowledge of self could be a dangerous thing

I eagerly await GLAAD's defense of Mister C btw
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)
Cee
not really - the tactic ppl take if you complain about this stuff in under-the-radar shit is then "who cares? nobody's listening anyway!" there's always a way to say "homophobia & misogyny don't matter," you just have to keep yr nose to the grindstone
― w of in the attic (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)
