ilxor you're basically just creating a fantasy world at that point -- if tyler everything involving odd future had played out exactly how it had except for the one difference of 'goblin' being released on anticon instead of xl, i really doubt that there would've been a discernible difference in its sales/acceptance
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
lol i should've just let dan's post stand
uh i think this particular boulder got pushed down the mountain a long time before tyler signed to xl
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 16:54 (fifteen years ago)
i can imagine totally different reactions if the album was on an underground hip-hop label, instead of XL catering to indie kids along with their roster of Radiohead, White Stripes, Adele, Beck, Vampire Weekend, M.I.A., Sigur Rós, Basement Jaxx, Thom Yorke, Titus Andronicus, The Horrors, Gil Scott-Heron, The xx

well, he signed with XL well after they'd begun to share a fanbase with those kinds of artists

four posts in a row calling your point completely idiotic = the ilx version of a grand slam. congrats, ilxor

i like that "walking with a ghost" song as much as any odd future song, that song is so good, but i don't know any other tegan and sara

i think they've entered that stage where you think they aren't popular anymore but are actually way more popular than they were when they had "buzz"

The album debuted at #21 on the Billboard 200, selling 22,665 copies in its first week.[8]

Probably been discussed to death but wrt to the gun thing, it seems to me he's experiencing some really mild intrusive thoughts. It's definitely not new and I would be more sympathetic to that interpretation if I hadn't seen his twitter, forum posts, formspring, etc.

I think the twitter posts would come after the intrusive thoughts persons to reinforce out

very well written. it has to be to make me read about someone in high school. but its really well done. plus, a rock critic playing football, right there i was kinda floored.

I think, to draw an analogy to the economy, that as an Internet Concern, Tyler has become too big to fail. If it's the case that his 73-minute record is just overbloated and doesn't have much new to offer, we can't SAY THAT—because it retroactively invalidates about 100,000 lines of journalistic credit that are tied to thinkpieces which would then be underwater.
― gr8080, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:34 (fifteen years ago)
that was funny
Cord: But at a certain point, I honestly felt ridiculous. There I was, a guy pushing 30, and I'm listening to a 19-year-old kid scream "BITCH SUCK DICK!" over bad beats. And I thought, "Hmmmmmm. Why am I doing this to myself? What purpose does this serve?" I like Steely Dan and waking up early, man!
― the first rule of debate club (Edward III), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
But there are very few rappers anymore who approach the music with a playfulness.
oh god will people just stfu o_0

Exactly, like, getting stoned and cooking elaborate meals? I KNOW THAT PERSON! I AM GOOD FRIENDS WITH THAT PERSON SEVERAL TIMES OVER!
I lol'd
but yeah kinda stupid.
also that Action Bronson guy sounds way too much like Ghostface for me to care
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:46 (fifteen years ago)
yeah that sentence is O_O wrong
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:52 (fifteen years ago)
xp to lex
it's kind of the opposite of accurate, and really obviously just pulled out of his ass - like how much do you have to not know what you're talking about if you can't process that lil wayne and nicki minaj are two of the biggest rappers in the world right now
― that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:55 (fifteen years ago)
also I get what that guy is saying about "too big to fail" but I think he's one album ahead -- Tyler and odd future are still new enough where he can get away with goblin being very similar to bastard -- probably not on wolf tho
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2011 20:55 (fifteen years ago)
lastly I think sites should stop publishing gmail convos as articles -- partly bcuz it's lazy but mostly because it's almost impossible for both ppl not to come off as smarmy assholes

I don't really disagree but "playful" means different things to different people (Li'l Wayne has always come off as more stupid than playful to me for ex but ymmv)
― underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
grocery bag punchlines are pretty playful
― i'm a fucking walking pair of Docs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 21:06 (fifteen years ago)
shakey, wayne is totally playful he even gre hee hees and giggles at his own punchlines like i'm a minx ain't i?
"playful" means different things to different people
otm.
also i find action bronson's particular brand of playfulness refreshing, so the statement isnt totally bonkers
