and in what ways do you champion the rights of the marginalised "max arrgh"? or is your contribution as a straight white man (forgive me if i guess wrong! i suspect not) limited to telling marginalised groups that they're "aspie rubes" who should "chill" when they get offended by slurs and rape jokes?

would be good if we stopped pretending that OF's slurs and rape jokes are somehow unusual in hip hop

I mean maybe if they were an indie folk act it would be SHOCKING and UNIQUE but come the fuck on
I think Earl has a highly unusual grasp of language and how to write raps for someone is age -- if he put out EARL when he was 24 I would merely call him an amazing rapper -- at 17 he's a prodigy
― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 23:34 (fifteen years ago)
the thing is they are treated as an indie act
― D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)
rando irrelevance, but regarding Earl's mom's quote on how "before there was an Earl, there was Thebe", Earl/Thebe should totally launch a new solo-career called URL and release stuff constantly online (but obviously never tour, thus guaranteeing Jeff Mangum-like ((unwarranted)) mystification)
― Stay Puft Daddy (kelpolaris), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'm just not very sympathetic to ethical judgments of music, I guess. as a Jew, should I not listen to musicians that dabble in or draw on nazism/nazi imagery or anti-semitic 5 Percent stuff? gtfo

sorry lex, no offence. but every time a hand-wringing article about how disgusting their lyrics are is printed, another few thousand people are going to check out their youtube clips. out of sheer curiosity, at least.

which is why i specifically wasn't hand-wringy in my article

So, at this point can we assume that's NOT Earl's real mom in "Wake Up Faggot"?
― m0stlyClean, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)
^this
they also use "nigga" in every sentence,(NOT VERY INDIE) but it's not discussed as the faggot or rape talk is...all those things are common to rap music.
― sisilafami, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:50 (fifteen years ago)
rape talk is not exactly 'common' to rap

i feel like i find their lyrics funny/interesting because i know that sexism, homophobia and violence are all terrible things. there's a kind of moral absurdity there. if they rapped about strangling kittens or pushing prams off cliffs i'd find that funny, too. it's a given to me that this stuff is really rotten, you know?
had to draw the line when tyler used the terms cracker and hipster on "seven" though. that shit hurt.

I do think a lot of the critical response is overselling their skill level, but "moderately talented" undersells them a bit, if only cuz it's too early for us to know how talented they'll turn out to be. Especially Earl, being this good at 16 is more than a moderate amount of potential. After seeing how thoughtful he comes across w/ Kelefa I'm all in on hoping he goes solo like Ice Cube.

Their trick is deciding who gets to be in on the joke; for listeners sensitive to lyrics about rape or homophobia, the trick is deciding if you really want to be in on the joke in the first place. Young white men, Tyler masks strapped on, were clamoring for that right on Friday, while the women tried to find a place for themselves. That meant either dancing awkwardly onstage, because that’s what seems true to the form, or retreating to the back, amongst the stripper-bitch-faggot-asses, and watching passively from a distance.

hey like I am chief handwringer on misogynist bullshit in art ok but to argue that "rape talk is common to rap" is just bullshit. It isn't, and what's more, there've been a good handful over the years of indie-ish bands who've used similar personified-narrator tropes to the ones Odd Future are using, usually toward the same sort of literary ends. people didn't handwring as much because these bands didn't make music in a style that's the most popular musical style in the world, one, and two, they didn't often have frontmen as compelling and charismatic as Tyler. (El Duce & GG don't really bring the kind of game to the table that Tyler does.) wring hands if you must (and as for me...I must!) about the prevalence of misogynist language in rap; I'm so tapped out on "bitch" and "whore" that a music I really enjoy is generally beyond my reach now because on any given record I will just be too bummed out to keep listening by the time I get to an album's 4th track. But that's not "rape talk." It's virulent sexism & really shitty, and to me not really as complex or worth-confronting-and-dealing-with as it is to others ('sup Shakey). plenty in all this worth wringing your hands about a little imo but let's not mischaracterize rap as a genre while we're doing it.

imo it has WAY more to do with the nature of rap lyrics in general than the popularity of rap itself or how charismatic the vocalist is
― suggest ban the subbest man (some dude), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 01:22 (fifteen years ago)
wait (btw if this is a boring or lame sidetrack feel free to tell me to stfu I am just jawin') you mean people handwring more about rap lyrics because of which quality inherent in rap lyrics...I'm not sure I follow you. Like, people did used to wring some serious hands about Guns n Roses. Axl would have to write a song that caused an international incident to get any hands wringing now though because nobody besides old farts give a shit about the music he makes, and his charisma's gone to seed.
― w of in the attic (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 01:37 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i'm not gonna shut you down or anything but i don't think i'll follow on this sidetrack because i just think the whole "charisma" thing or chalking it up to rap being more popular/relevant as an artform than indie rock is a total red herring
― some dude, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 01:45 (fifteen years ago)
dude seriously, come on. strangling kittens and pushing prams off cliffs ARE absurd, because they don't happen every day. rape happens every day. and the culture we live in (US at least) is fucking broken when it comes to dealing with it. lyrics advocating rape don't make me go "oh my god that's so shocking and transgressive, who would promote rape!" this is a culture that has shown a kneejerk tendency to disbelieve assault victims, victim-blame by focusing on their clothes/drinking habits, etc. lyrics advocating rape are just one more thing in the endless parade of cultural bullshit that makes me and many of the people i love feel unsafe, because it's glorifying a problem that is nowhere near being "solved" yet.
