earl is a prodigiously talented rapper

no

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

at this point theyre special for no other reason than that a lot of people (including you) can't stop talking about them

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

hey you typed out their lyrics at length, that's what i did with nicki minaj in 2009.

congratulations

contenderizer, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

being that good at 16 is biggie, rakim or nas level of pure talent

sisilafami, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

i talk about a lot of acts shakey mo, unfortunately no one else wants to talk about miss fire with me so this is where i end up conversing ;_;

also i was just talking to another journalist about this, i really hate the "you are paying attention to them therefore you love them" argument - if everyone stopped talking about OF right now it's not like i'd be clamouring to keep the debate alive. ie it;s not my bloody fault

tell me exactly how he's "that good" compared to anyone else i mentioned. hey he knows what internal rhymes are, slow fucking handclap

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:15 (fifteen years ago)

that's just not true! earl and tyler are moderately talented, really no more or less than any given promising emerging rapper who drops a mixtape in any random month (better than yelawolf? na'tee? shabazz palaces? angel haze? deej's beloved jacka? or do they just have a more media-friendly backstory and some bieber-for-shut-ins teenage cvlt shit going on?).

oh, come on. "better" is meaningless. there's no way to make objective, universal comparisons wr2 this kind of shit. some might think they're better, some might not. they're certainly far more interesting to me than most "promising" mixtape rappers, but ymmv, of course.

these kids are not special.

at the very least, they're special. we're all fucking snowflakes, dude, or have you not heard?

contenderizer, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

wit, witlessness, sensibility, sensitivity, insensitivity, complexity, simplicity, traditionalism, iconoclasm, pop sense, ad nauseam

look na'tee & yelawolf are dope, but just... no

do better than that j0rdan

natee is better than earl

D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

imho

D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

it kinda does, huh.

i mean assuming these dudes don't fizzle and be forgotten by the time earl is done with school, and assuming he's still interested in OF by then, the hype around w/e he decides to drop is going to be insane. it may not translate to real-world numbers, but i'm guessing that it'll attract more real-world attention than Goblin, like by orders of magnitude.

dunno, earl is technically a better rapper: interesting patterns, awesome punchlines, etc... but tyler's the one who had the whole vision for OF, as well as his own brand of manic charisma. even though earl's album is probably my fave of the lot, i think tyler's always gonna be the star of the show.

btw, what happened to vince staples? his verses on epar and moracular world were schweet.

i'm going to dinner

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

at the very least earl is not FUNNIER than na'tee nor as evocative as yelawolf

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

telling other people why they ACTUALLY like something = nagl

xp

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

but this is a dumb game to play -- earl is magnetic at what he does, hes a good rapper, the idea that hes shitting on all these other rappers is bs tho

D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

at the very least earl is not FUNNIER than na'tee nor as evocative as yelawolf

to you. this line of argument is pointless.

contenderizer, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think he's better than Shabazz Palaces or Quik tho lol

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

"if everyone stopped talking about OF right now it's not like i'd be clamouring to keep the debate alive. ie it;s not my bloody fault"

well would you please stop writing stories about them for major international newspapers then please?

scott seward, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

looooool

markers, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

the idea that hes shitting on all these other rappers is bs tho

of course. i haven't read the nyorker piece, but i don't feel as though earl & tyler are being presented to me as firmament-scraping GENIUSES who tower over the competition. positive reviews seem to frame them primarily as talented, widely-hyped and "controversial."

contenderizer, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

anyway i really suspect that the main contortion that ~liberal~ audiences perform in order to justify contributing to the OF hypemachine is that in order for it all to be okay, they HAVE to be genius level, unarguable talents who do things that no other can.

well, how about they just take a chill pill, stop being aspie rubes and realise there are better ways of championing the rights of the oppressed and marginalised peoples of this world than bitching about absurd teenage rapper's usage of nasty words?

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

oh snaps

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:27 (fifteen years ago)

earl shits on shabbaz palaces & angel haze -- maybe he just pisses on na'tee & yelawolf

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

go eat

markers, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

and in what ways do you champion the rights of the marginalised "max arrgh"? or is your contribution as a straight white man (forgive me if i guess wrong! i suspect not) limited to telling marginalised groups that they're "aspie rubes" who should "chill" when they get offended by slurs and rape jokes?

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

odd future earl's wang pee pee them all

sisilafami, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

would be good if we stopped pretending that OF's slurs and rape jokes are somehow unusual in hip hop

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

I mean maybe if they were an indie folk act it would be SHOCKING and UNIQUE but come the fuck on

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

I think Earl has a highly unusual grasp of language and how to write raps for someone is age -- if he put out EARL when he was 24 I would merely call him an amazing rapper -- at 17 he's a prodigy

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

the thing is they are treated as an indie act

D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

rando irrelevance, but regarding Earl's mom's quote on how "before there was an Earl, there was Thebe", Earl/Thebe should totally launch a new solo-career called URL and release stuff constantly online (but obviously never tour, thus guaranteeing Jeff Mangum-like ((unwarranted)) mystification)

Stay Puft Daddy (kelpolaris), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

He was a better rapper at 16 than lil wayne was

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

the thing is they are treated as an indie act

I dunno what this means. I don't "treat" bands, I listen to them.

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

shyheim was p dope

D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

I'm just not very sympathetic to ethical judgments of music, I guess. as a Jew, should I not listen to musicians that dabble in or draw on nazism/nazi imagery or anti-semitic 5 Percent stuff? gtfo

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

sorry lex, no offence. but every time a hand-wringing article about how disgusting their lyrics are is printed, another few thousand people are going to check out their youtube clips. out of sheer curiosity, at least.

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

which is why i specifically wasn't hand-wringy in my article

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

So, at this point can we assume that's NOT Earl's real mom in "Wake Up Faggot"?

m0stlyClean, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

would be good if we stopped pretending that OF's slurs and rape jokes are somehow unusual in hip hop

^this

the thing is they are treated as an indie act

they also use "nigga" in every sentence,(NOT VERY INDIE) but it's not discussed as the faggot or rape talk is...all those things are common to rap music.

sisilafami, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

rape talk is not exactly 'common' to rap

D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:52 (fifteen years ago)

o rly

underrated earl sweatshirt fans i have boned (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

yes

D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

well it's certainly not unusual

sisilafami, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

i feel like i find their lyrics funny/interesting because i know that sexism, homophobia and violence are all terrible things. there's a kind of moral absurdity there. if they rapped about strangling kittens or pushing prams off cliffs i'd find that funny, too. it's a given to me that this stuff is really rotten, you know?

had to draw the line when tyler used the terms cracker and hipster on "seven" though. that shit hurt.

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:59 (fifteen years ago)

playing it off as a joke kind of is imo
