"btw everyone who has written an odd future feature before this sanneh one should be embarrassed & humbled (no offense noz)"
To be fair not everyone had 8,000 words to tell the story, nor the budget and prestige of the New Yorker to support it, nor all the additional groundwork that comes with a six month press blitz. (Tyler's name was still off the record when I wrote my piece, let alone the stuff about Earl's whereabouts/father.)
But yeah Sanneh killed it.

“So time progresses and the fan base gets bigger and the ‘Free Earl’ chants get louder but now with the ‘Free Earl’ chants come a barely indirect ‘Fuck Earl’s Mom’ and in the blink of an eye my worry changes from ‘will there still be this hype when I get back’ to ‘Oh shit I just inspired a widespread movement of people who are dedicated to the downfall of my mom.’”
lol

Haven't read the whole New Yorker piece but fascinated by the fact that Earl's dad Keorapetse Kgositsile is the poet whose Towards a Walk in the Sun inspired the Last Poets' name: "The only poem you will hear will be the spearpoint pivoted in the punctured marrow of the villain." Such a great, bizarre connection between 1971 proto-rap and 2011 hip hop.

don't know if this is "well, duh" or not but they play Frank Ocean on Hot 97 now. (I don't hear the radio much, had a rental car on Saturday.)
― dmr, Monday, 16 May 2011 13:22 (fifteen years ago)
I know artists slip thru the cracks at labels all the time but the rise of frank ocean is pretty hilarious
― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 13:27 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i've heard "Novacane" on the radio here too and it's climbing up the R&B charts.

The emails from Earl are relayed through his mother and as much as i don't want to cry conspiracy, they really can't be taken at face value.
― Number None, Monday, 16 May 2011 14:12 (fifteen years ago)
haha, the world's first Earl Truther. anyway maybe you're right, but I trust sanneh enough as a journalist to feel secure that he wasn't played.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)
the way sanneh presents it kinda makes it clear that he's not necessarily taking it at face value either, just putting the little info he has out there

― J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 14:37 (fifteen years ago)
it doesn't really, though it makes their acting out even more of a boring cliché and adds to the unowned privilege that runs through their work

I think lex's point has to do with the uninterrogated/ignored/outright denied privilege that goes with being a straight American male

Edward, privilege attains to all males + especially to American ones. sorry to blow yr mind w/that
― ...wouldn't need the talcum powder (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 16 May 2011 16:04 (fifteen years ago)
like, whiteness is undeniably its own sphere of privilege but anybody who thinks that male privilege magically disappears in the absence of the cherry-on-the-sundae privilege card is delusional & wrong
― ...wouldn't need the talcum powder (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 16 May 2011 16:05 (fifteen years ago)
So is it better to be black male or white female?
― Rofflellzee (Craigo Boingo), Monday, 16 May 2011 16:06 (fifteen years ago)
We settled that one with the Democratic presidential primary iirc

Ice cube wasn't really 'middle class' his dad was a janitor.
― D-40, Monday, 16 May 2011 16:09 (fifteen years ago)
kind of a non-question xp - it's "better" to acknowledge how privilege informs your positions and avoid engaging in dialogues/narrative stances that use one's own privilege to marginalize/disenfranchise others, i.e., straight males telling lesbians that they've got some hard dick for them. For Edward, Tyler evidently has some offsetting disenfranchisement that makes this sort of homophobic assholism harmless, acceptable trolling. for me, less so.
― ...wouldn't need the talcum powder (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 16 May 2011 16:09 (fifteen years ago)
