Sad it's so bad for record stores nowadays they have to lure customers in w/the promise of humjobs :-P

you gotta do what you gotta do.

scott seward, Sunday, 15 May 2011 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

but seriously i take the time/effort to have a nice classical section - something a lot of people don't bother with - and i'm always really happy when people appreciate it/take the time to look at it. this guy was from korea - visiting his son who goes to fancy private school around here - and he knew a good thing when he saw one. i've got top-notch euro audiophile stuff at bargain basement prices.

I really expected that message from sara to elicit a thoughtful response from the immature skateboard punk who gets off on creating controversy through his offensive outbursts, this is a shocking development

there's really no way that this can match up to the investigative reporting of complex.com, but might be cool nonetheless

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for the heads up, reading this now.

I know some dude isn't a tyler fan but now he's stealing his shoes, this is a new low

btw everyone who has written an odd future feature before this sanneh one should be embarrassed & humbled (no offense noz)

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

Interesting article... One of the major takeaways is that earl would like everyone to cut it out with the "free earl" schtick.

"btw everyone who has written an odd future feature before this sanneh one should be embarrassed & humbled (no offense noz)"

To be fair not everyone had 8,000 words to tell the story, nor the budget and prestige of the New Yorker to support it, nor all the additional groundwork that comes with a six month press blitz. (Tyler's name was still off the record when I wrote my piece, let alone the stuff about Earl's whereabouts/father.)

But yeah Sanneh killed it.

“So time progresses and the fan base gets bigger and the ‘Free Earl’ chants get louder but now with the ‘Free Earl’ chants come a barely indirect ‘Fuck Earl’s Mom’ and in the blink of an eye my worry changes from ‘will there still be this hype when I get back’ to ‘Oh shit I just inspired a widespread movement of people who are dedicated to the downfall of my mom.’”

lol

Haven't read the whole New Yorker piece but fascinated by the fact that Earl's dad Keorapetse Kgositsile is the poet whose Towards a Walk in the Sun inspired the Last Poets' name: "The only poem you will hear will be the spearpoint pivoted in the punctured marrow of the villain." Such a great, bizarre connection between 1971 proto-rap and 2011 hip hop.

That's one way of rebelling against your old man I suppose.

don't know if this is "well, duh" or not but they play Frank Ocean on Hot 97 now. (I don't hear the radio much, had a rental car on Saturday.)

dmr, Monday, 16 May 2011 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

I know artists slip thru the cracks at labels all the time but the rise of frank ocean is pretty hilarious

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i've heard "Novacane" on the radio here too and it's climbing up the R&B charts.

ofwgktadgafls

earl comes off as way too mature to really tolerate some of tyler's asshole behavior if he was around him now

<3 excerpts from that poem re: thebe - how you gon/do anything but rule?

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 May 2011 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

The emails from Earl are relayed through his mother and as much as i don't want to cry conspiracy, they really can't be taken at face value.

Number None, Monday, 16 May 2011 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

haha, the world's first Earl Truther. anyway maybe you're right, but I trust sanneh enough as a journalist to feel secure that he wasn't played.

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

the way sanneh presents it kinda makes it clear that he's not necessarily taking it at face value either, just putting the little info he has out there

I don't think they've ever claimed otherwise? also I don't see why that matters

J0rdan S., Monday, 16 May 2011 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

it doesn't really, though it makes their acting out even more of a boring cliché and adds to the unowned privilege that runs through their work

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

that makes it more authentic
