aero, i'm usually 100% in your corner when it comes to the real world application of personal core values (tearing it up re: abortion rights in politics threads), but i'm a little at a loss here. not so long ago, we might easily have said that using "faggot" for gay man was a lost battle, that homophobia itself was a lost battle, that straight society would simply never accept homosexuality in any form. same goes for certain racist language and assumptions. the ease with which we roll over in accepting "bitch" and other forms of misogyny depresses me. not saying i don't understand, but i'm still disappointed.
it's just that I don't think I'll ever get anywhere trying to argue on a music message board in 2011 that the use of "bitch" is incredibly offensive & harmful & damaging - struggle to imagine how to get to a point where sexism might be something people would address with more than a why-this-doesn't-prevent-me-from-enjoying-the-music passing comment in an aboveground review
I mean don't get me wrong it's despair functioning here but at some point you just gotta say, you know what, some things I maybe can have an impact on by using reason - persuading men younger than me that "bitch" is always wrong isn't one of those areas

i wanna seriously say again that throwing a frosty out the window at some people is some unforgivably dickish behavior. like seriously, you can couch all kinds of language in whatever PERSONAE you're into and oh eminem did this already and meta meta meta meta mushroom mushroom whatever but if you are throwing beverages out your windows at strangers you are a straight up choad

OK, I haven't read all through this thread, but I just got done listening to this and my two main observations are that it's roughly about 8 hours and 20 minutes long and that dude has basically turned into Angry Drake. I'm guessing both these things result from Tyler believing his own hype. There are a few good songs (most of which I'd already heard), but I can't see myself listening to this in its entirety ever again.

Took me a few sittings to get through it, the thing is paced like a slug. One listen is good enough for me too. Shoulda recorded the whole lp with the roots ,that fallon version of sandwitches sounds better than anything on goblin.

in goblin's defense (again), the track times are a little misleading. like "radicals" is really a 3.5 minute song with a long interlude tacked on at the end. the single cuts that that and doesn't drag at all. "fish" looks long at 6+ min, but it's really two relatively short pieces jammed together, both pretty great. no excuse offered for "goblin", "window" and "golden", but they're, uh, thematic and mostly exist to frame the rest. "nightmare" is longish but totally justifies itself, imo.

The song lengths aren't the only thing that makes it feel 8 hours long though.
― al b. surly! (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 May 2011 07:20 (fifteen years ago)
feel awful goofy, but what the hell, my playlist:
01. Yonkers - 4.0902. Radicals (edit) - 5.3603. She (feat. Frank Ocean) - 4.1304. Transylvania - 3.1205. Nightmare - 5.2206. Tron Cat - 4.1407. Sandwiches (feat. Hodgy Beats) - 4.5108. Fish - 3.5309. Boppin Bitch (separated) - 2.2710. Analog (feat. Hodgy Beats) - 2.5411. Golden - 5.4312. Burger (feat. Hodgy Beats) 3.5013. Steak Sauce 3.22
runs just over 50 min, solid pretty much all the way through. might cut "transylvania", i dunno...
― always have time for the crystalline entity (contenderizer), Thursday, 12 May 2011 08:01 (fifteen years ago)
actually, cut "boppin bitch" and "steak sauce" too, run time goes down to around 45 min, close to perfect

Also i don't think anyone is "outraged" but lex
i'm not outraged, that was my point! i listen to and enjoy many songs that include homophobic and/or misogynist content - there's a song on the new dj quik album, which is my favourite rap album of the year, where he calls people queers for a few lines.
my focus on it w/r/t tyler is because a) it really is so much more front-and-centre - i take the opposite view to rich fourfour, t.i. or 50 casually dropping "faggot" is easily ignorable to me but tyler seems to make it, and the rapeyness, the point way more than anyone else; b) making it the point and leaning so heavily on it makes his music worse from a purely artistic perspective.
also i don't know whether t.i. or 50 or whoever would even drop "faggot" in a track these days? i don't actually recall hearing it that much over the past few years, from either underground or mainstream rappers - when eminem said it once on "roman's revenge" there was a furore about that - i can't imagine jay-z coming out with it. because, like, society and hip-hop have progressed since 2001, when jay-z felt able to casually drop it on the blueprint.
which is why the "it's just a word that 4chan kids use to piss off old squares" argument is so dumb, because it's a word that signifies old squares and old bigots to me, and using it so much just makes tyler seem totally regressive and like an old square himself.
also i want to agree w/contenderizer that tyler's rapeyness is much more beyond the pale than the "homophobia", such as it is - it's not just calling people bitches or the usual objectification, both of which i'm usually ok with - in like 15 years of listening to hip-hop i don't think ANY rapper i've been into has tried to make actual rape jokes such a big part of their shtick so it's not just an extension of standard hip-hop misogyny at all. it goes without saying that they make his music fail as art too - the phrase "rape jokes" gives that away - rape isn't funny in any context - someone really really needs to school tyler on that (and if you don't get it someone needs to school you too)
― lex pretend, Thursday, 12 May 2011 08:25 (fifteen years ago)
"it's just a word that 4chan kids use to piss off old squares"
I don't buy that as being the argument... it's a word 4chan kids use to be edgy. Tyler uses it 'cause "it's an impact word" i.e. it riles squares/people who care/bloggers.
― Yeah okay I don't need to hear this album (Craigo Boingo), Thursday, 12 May 2011 09:41 (fifteen years ago)
I would keep 'Her' in a cut version...works nicely btwn 'Tron Cat' and 'Sandwitches', provides a bit of a breath. Love that run.
― Yeah okay I don't need to hear this album (Craigo Boingo), Thursday, 12 May 2011 09:42 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i think that's why i'm emphasising that i'm not riled as such - ain't nothing i haven't heard before son - but it also makes him sound like an old square. there's little sadder than some kid trying to be edgy and ending up sounding like a 50-yr-old bigot.
