TOOL - C/D!?

I can't think of anything Eno's done that I particularly enjoy, no. I like some of Beck's work, in an if-I-hear-it-on-the-radio-that's-good kind of way, but I don't feel any emotional attachment to his music or anything. But I don't have anything against them.

The thing that separates Tool from them, I think, is Tool's relentless anger and negativity. Yes, it is all right if your lyrics don't do much in and of themselves -- and I didn't say "lyrics" so much as "authorial voice", which is partially semantic, but it's worth pointing out that -- lyrics or no -- you, and I, and everyone else has at least a general sense of what Eno and Beck's aesthetics are about.

I think the difference with Tool is that they're claiming more than that -- they're claiming to have something to say that justifies the deeply unpleasant, violently angry nature of their music (both lyrically and, to a lesser extent, sonically). And when you ask them what it is, it comes out, "bluh bluh corporations bluh the government bluh bluh non-tradional sex acts and/or images of feces bluh!" Don't go all vague on me, Tool, is what I'm saying. Don't show me a lot of disgusting things unless you can justify my unsettlement -- otherwise it's just shock for shock's sake.

And as far as I'm concerned, Tool don't even come close to justifying it -- their message, as it were, is a bunch of empty and bitter cliches. And if I wanted empty cliches, well, there are a lot of empty cliches out there that don't harangue me about ridiculous conspiracy theories or force me to contemplate the image of a man sucking his own dick. I'll probably listen to them, then.

And yeah, I understand that I privilege lyrics more than most people. We may be arguing at cross purposes from the beginning, really.

are you sure you're not talking about marilyn manson or slipknot?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, pretty sure. Why?

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

lol. keep up the good work, dood.

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 02:55 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is entirely too entertaining, though I kind of feel bad that nobody seemed to want to engage seriously with pessimist.

askance johnson (sdownes), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

I think way upthread at the beginning of this argument Pessimist encapsulated almost perfectly how some people completely miss the auxilliary point of Tool's visual sensibilities (ie, turning the grotesque into the absurd and ridiculous) by only fixating on half of it; it's akin to the "BE AN INDIVIDUAL JUST LIKE ME!" brigade that follow around artists like Marilyn Manson.

I tend to judge lyrics on how well the suit the song's mood and meter; Tool rates pretty highly on that scale for me. "Meaning" is a bonus.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody else think that Maynard's voice sounds totally not like his voice on "10,000 Days" (the song)? I totally love it though.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

it does sounds a bit gravelier than usual

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

just saw them live. wonderful! i can only imagine how great the lateralus tour must have been, though.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Based on the two times I saw them on that tour, they were utterly godlike. (And a pretty good bootleg of one of the shows that I was at confirms it.) Good to hear you had a good time!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

"The thing that separates Tool from them, I think, is Tool's relentless anger and negativity."

Don't just call me pessimist
Try and read between the lines
I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend

That doesn't seem relentlessly negative to me. Also, did you have no metal as a child? I'm getting that feeling.

lrsn (larssen), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

doods gotta be british

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I more or less had no music as a child. I didn't even start listening to anything written after 1900 or so until I went off to college in '99. I generally dislike metal, due to its lack of concision and silly hyper-masculine aesthetic.

But perhaps it's more relevant to the question that I hate conspiracy theorists in general, and have the same violently negative reaction to Bill Hicks? I just think their (Hicks'/Tool's) modus operandi -- alleging frequently-unspecified and always-unverified misdeeds on the part of likewise-vague Large and Monolithic Cultural Forces, spuriously connecting said forces to repugnant/scatological images, and slapping a veneer of quasi-mystical overtones on the whole thing -- is both intellectually dishonest and incredibly tiresome.

And what kind of dick musician refers to the listener as "my friend"? Talk about a thing you only do if you have an impractical haircut!

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

I bring up the question of alleged senses of humor again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

its like geir, tynan defong and george gossit has a kid!

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

Pessimist do you like rap music?

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

also do you realize how you type like you have a bagga dix in yo mouth?

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

In reverse, now!

- Do you realize you still haven't even tried to argue against me?

- I like some rap music; I can't say I'm well-versed in the field. What does that have to do with anything?

Don't give me "sense of humor". Have you been reading any of my posts? Way funnier than anything you're coming up with. And the kind of embarrassing, childish dick-and-poo talk Tool engage in is basically the antithesis of humor. (There's something else I could say here, but I won't.)

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

Have you been reading any of my posts? Way funnier than anything you're coming up with.

*blinks*

Look, maybe you really think you're funny -- hey, I often have the same affliction (but I don't AUTOMATICALLY assume I'm funny). All you're doing is coming across as one of the most tendentiously dull writers I've read in a long time (and believe me, when you work even slightly in academia, you get to know the type). There's nothing funny in your posts -- intentionally, at least. But if your goal is deep satire, then congratulations, you really capture the mode of suicidal boredom with aplomb.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

You didn't think the bit about the dead rat was funny? Well, maybe you wouldn't. People have been amused by it before, though. I'll admit I have a tendency to use longer words when I'm upset; I like to think it's because I am trying to be precise, but... eh.

I'll also admit this whole thing has upset me more than it probably should. There's something about conspiracy theorists in general, and Bill Hicks/his followers in particular, that just angers me uncontrollably. Sorry about that!

Whatever; this discussion isn't worth anyone's time or anger. No matter what either of us says, I'm going to continue to think Tool are paranoid, arrogant, crass, and inhumane, the worst sort of self-important shock-for-shock's-sake-masquerading-as-Deep nonsense -- as I said, no better than Bill Hicks. Meanwhile, the rest of you are either going to disagree (for various reasons) or not care. Nothing's going to change much.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

I honestly couldn't give a care about either conspiracy theorists or Bill Hicks, and I don't think being a Tool fan means you automatically worship either of them. If that helps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

I USE LONG WORDS WHEN MAD TOO : (

gear (gear), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

Well, that's really why Tool bothers me so much -- I mean, aside from the music, which I don't like, but there's a lot of music I don't like, and mostly I don't care about it. But mostly, I don't associate that music with things I strongly and actively dislike, whereas with Tool I do.

But enough. I really should stop this.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

you know he's a britisher if he brings up bill hicks.

(I'm not from England.)

Pessimist (Pessimist), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

gear, I linked to a post of Pessimist's 15 favorite songs above.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

wait, you have a dead rat routine? i didn't mind the dead rat part actually. needs work though. the trenchcoat and fedora line was kinda obvious. but i always get a kick out of fight club bashing.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

or tool bashing apparently. i have little to no interest in tool, and yet here i am.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

Quiet, you! I'm populist musician Maynard Jones Whatsis, and I'm in a band about tools! My next album is heavily influenced by Tiger Trap!

(Yeah, I think the rat bit might've been better if I ended it after the first paragraph.)

Gear has made me so happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I'm resisting the urge to... do something right now. Not quite sure what.

Nevertheless, it is perhaps fair to say that I have never had any reason to expect to enjoy the works of Tool. I will grant that point.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

do you dig super slo-mo claymation?

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

omg the aenema review...i remember reading that! i was 14, a die-hard tool fan, and i was like "fuck you Spin magazine for insulting my band!" i think i almost wrote an angry letter!

i had the excuse of being 14, though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit that was almost ten years ago...

MY LIFE WHERE HAS IT GONE?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Now there's your Tool lyric.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is the gift that keeps on giving, though now I REALLY feel bad for pessimist, who, as far as I can tell, has done nothing to deserve such abuse. But maybe I'm just partial to him because his list o' favorite songs up there prompted me to d/l that black tambourine song (which I listen to on repeat in my car during my commute, it is so great).

I suppose I have nothing to say about tool.
