It sounds like you're breaking up with them.

Thanks, I got a couple more around here, I think, that I'll post when I find 'em - Old and New Dreams for sure, maybe some others. I hope someone who has the Amon Duul and MJQ versions will post those, too.
Then maybe we can move on to some other standards!

ok, here's a better offering, the 8 Bold Souls version from their 1991 record Sideshow, their 2nd of three and in my opinion their best. I love all of them but was *slightly* disappointed in Last Option. still think Sideshow is where they really nailed things...

Excellent thread, by the way. A few months back I was thinking how great it would be to have a compilation of Lonely Womans, but I was too lazy and not enough of a douchebag to apply myself to it. It's good to have this thread doing the work for me.
Am I the only one who thinks that a version with someone throat singing the melody would be just about the raddest thing ever?

for those not in the know, Old and New Dreams was a group consisting of Coleman's classic quartet with Dewey Redman instead of Ornette.

Leaving off the Takayanagi version, the eleven that I have now add up to 79:42.
I really like the idea of Jazz Douchebags rolling series of threads for multiple versions. I'm changing my vote from "Giant Steps" to "Take the A Train," because there's a solo piano version by Sun Ra that I heard once, that completely blew my mind.

I've decided that Ornette's Lonely Woman is my favourite piece of jazz music. Not a lot seems to come close - or does it? IS there anything else out there as melodic and plaintive and slightly-skewed as this? Big question, I know.

Here's a version from James Blood Ulmer's Music Speaks Louder Than Words, a strange record that mixes six instrumental versions of Ornette tunes with three original blues/funk/rap songs. I believe this album features the only recordings of the Coleman compositions "Cherry Cherry" and "Street News".

Pretty sure that date is wrong; I believe this was recorded in 1969. Unfortunately, this has never been reissued.
