this album RULES ME

breezy, Friday, 26 August 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

McFly on Jackson! Priceless.

Dougie: "That first song, it was just like... skipping and everything. What were they doing? I thought the CD was skipping."

Tom: "What is it? What's he actually done? Has he written a song?"

Dougie: "Is he a DJ? He's not actually written a song".

Harry: "I'm sure he'd come back with a fair argument to say, well it's gritty."

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

this album has been looking at me all lost and forlorn for a few days now, as i wasn't in mood for excess glitch/clicks etc. but today i got all way through, and dense it is. not sure exactly what type of mood i should be in to fully appreciate it however. sure a few more spins and all will click into place - so far i am loving 'fast life', but its obvious why they lifted rock on/arpeggio for the single ...

and best thing on warp in 2 years ! thats plain mad ..

(for me !!!, chok rock, maximo park, jamie liddel will all get more airings than this)

mark e (mark e), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

BTW - the whole of that mcfly piece is wonderful and rather revealing - eg : opinion on FF - ahem ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh, totally. That's what makes it great- and look at their "single of the week" picks, for fucking out loud! Fully half pick the Kaiser Chiefs, which is a) a rerelease and b) a dire chunk of crap, and the other two bravely buck the trend by plumping for Oasis and Black Eyed Peas. And their take on the White Stripes is fun reading as well.

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

this should have been hyped more. it's so good. instead we get round two of Broken Social Scene, Franz Ferdinand and Devendra....blahhhh

breezy, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I know...

i have a feeling i am going to respect this more than enjoy it

Takes a while to sink in but this is far more than an 'impressive' album, the utopia-rock on-arpeggio suite is one funky streak.

Baaderonixx and the hedonistic gluttons (baaderonixx), Thursday, 6 October 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

breezy, tell the truth - are you a bot?

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

it is good, I think he'll get better though

howell huser (chaki), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Hope he makes a pop record next

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

I like this too... it's one of those things that prevents me from having to take psychedelics. I have a Jackson state of mind lately. specifically Hard Tits and Rock On. Unfortunately, I must file it into the overstuffed bin of things that I wished human beings would dance to. In between the right songs, Rock On will do the trick, but otherwise, absolute floor killer.

firstworldman=gregory, Friday, 7 October 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Eh, it's all right.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Aha i was dancing to Rock On at home and wondering whether this would get played in discotheques...

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 16 December 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

'Fast Life' is the only track I can really hack.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 16 December 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

I really only listen to utopia tbh but that's enough for me to declare undying love

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 16 December 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

well

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 16 December 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Best thing on Warp in ages.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 16 December 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

i wish this album was shorter -- it starts out so great but by the time i get to the track with the kid talking (which kinda grates), i'm wishing that a few tracks would have been designated to b-side status.

spastic heritage (spastic heritage), Friday, 16 December 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

this ended up making my top 10

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Friday, 16 December 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

ended up in my top 10 too (I think)

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 16 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I bought this the day it came out, listened to it, then sold it back the next day.

That M83 remix was incredibly ace. This album is not.

dali madison's nut (donut), Friday, 16 December 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

also in my top ten.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 16 December 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Listening over these samples again... ach!

Does this record groove as a whole after like, ten plays people? 'Cos I'm imagining it does for like 3/4 tracks and then the rest is some hinterland between not-quite-interesting-enough to exactly be IDM, but not dancable even on the level of that last Mouse On Mars record, but more imaginative sonically still...

Frustrating. I like 'Rock On' now though, but it seems to be a highlight :(

frickin' username (fandango), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Probably one of the best albums I've heard this year. But what like what spastic heritage said, it's a bit too long (Radiohead-album-length syndrome). Still good shit though

= ???

I bought it, still going to get filed under "permanent indecision" I think! ROCKS LIKE A BASTARD when it feels like it which is all the way through, but in completely unpredictable, irregular fits and starts. It doesn't drag for me particularly, except on the bits when the song is over but it requires another 30 seconds to trickle away. I do like it though!

But yeah, 7/10, promising debut etc... but I'll probably only like it as much as that Ark album when the novelty wears off. Neither are close to Top Ten of (my) year.

Merry Christmas (fandango), Friday, 23 December 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

lol @ the "blogosphere" reference in TV Dogs! And yeah, this is just hella good FUN. It's not deep, and kinda refreshing for that. Okay 7.5 then ;O)

Merry Christmas (fandango), Monday, 26 December 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

This is definitely the most addictive album I've heard all year. I hear Venetian Snares on heavy sedation, which slows his pace of music down to something more enjoyable. There are some slightly "novel" moments on the album, but nothing that will lose its appeal, and he has moments where he falls on a quality melody (Hard Tits). I'm on the bandwagon with this one.

Surprisingly I'm still regularly listening to this (well 2/3 of it basically). Whoever talking upthread about heavy this is OTM. 'Fast Life' or 'Arpeggio' at high volume are unbelievable.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 07:58 (twenty years ago)

fully agree. kinda felt like this album didn't get as much recognition as it deserved, however, if he could make a whole album of utopia/rock on/arpeggio tracks that good, then he'd be really golden

kevin barking (arghargh), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:19 (twenty years ago)

if it didn't have the stupid track with the kid talking or the mike ladd thing this album would be perfect. as it is, it's still very good.

applejack carney (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

The first three tracks are superb, perfect balance of max/msp noise and electro-dance thuggery... it then gets derailed into aimless silliness...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

interviewed him last week at mutek, he was really really sweet. maybe i can upload it at some point.

No new news on his website or warp for that matter, but can we expect anything new from Jackson in 2007? I sure hope so.

medicine smack (van smack), Saturday, 6 January 2007 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

God, I hope so.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 6 January 2007 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

i never quite "got" him. As with a lot of modern post-IDM stuff, it's interesting for a while and then it gets too much. I'd have probably loved "Smash" if it had come out in 1998 though.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Saturday, 6 January 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

he is wonderful-
totally underrated

can't wait for more by him

()()()---()()() (internet), Saturday, 6 January 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

It's WAY funner than the kind of post-IDM that got quite a bad name for a while (not sure what you're thinking of dog latin but do you mean hyperactive/spazzed-out DSP stuff like Kid606, Tigerbeat etc?). Much more party-rock-excess minded than geekily impressive. I think I'd have rated this far more highly if it had come out this year, with less competition.

There's a nice interview with him in the Slices DVD that came out around June... I get the feeling dude takes life pretty easy, I'll definitely be excited to hear what he does next too.

Bodyrox feat. Luciano Pavarotti (fandango), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Much more party-rock-excess minded than geekily impressive.

OTM. I was listening to this the other day as it happens.'Arpeggio' should have been the staple for Human after all

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Saturday, 6 January 2007 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Basically can't stand his last album, though on first impression I found it passable. Migraine inducing.

jimn (jimnaseum), Saturday, 6 January 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

I liked it a lot initially and was super psyched from samples I heard on bleep. After listening a lot I lost interest and I guess the novelty wore off, but I still come back to it from time to time. It just sounded so immensely fun when I first got into it!

I feel the same way about the stuff out on Ed Banger right now like the Sebastian and Mr. Flash stuff. Lots of fun to listen to, and makes me wanna dance.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 13 June 2013 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

I am very very excited about this. I felt Smash was one of the best debuts Warp had put out since Clarence Park

octobeard, Thursday, 13 June 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

Hah, didn't see this thread got revived yesterday, coincidentally I was listening to this album yesterday on my car after years of not touching it and it sounded amazing. Great news. He hasn't released anything new since 2005?

Moka, Friday, 14 June 2013 07:27 (thirteen years ago)

Well dang, now I'm excited. I had wondered why this guy just disappeared.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 14 June 2013 07:48 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah alias wondered howbthusbguy could afford to not release anything for so long (yet still staying in the biz via dj'ing). Anyway Smash was pretty classic even though the heavy front load probably made it seem slightly stronger than it really was. I still err rock Rock On pretty regularly

Jackson and his Lonely Hearts Club Band stylings a bit unexpected. Album isn't bad but there's not much that sticks with me after a couple of listens.

I gotta say, apart from maybe two or three tunes, this is a serious letdown. I adored Smash and thought he was the best thing out of France when it came out, and this is his followup? Son, I'm not mad, just disappointed. What kind of record was he trying to make here?
