Wait, you're counting differently than I am:
(1) Junta (2) Lawn Boy (3) A Picture of Nectar (4) Rift (5) Hoist
-- was what I thought the order was?
Yes, that's the order. Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em.
Any of you ever listened to STORY OF A GHOST? That's my favorite album of theirs.
I think it's their worst. Gnomic, depressive. A good song or two at best.

Classic. True originals, even if you do hate the "weeny guitar tone" (as mentioned upthread, which is kind of OTM and funny even though I like some of his playing) and the goofy tunes and hippie nonsense.
I have a soft spot for many of their hallmarks (again, not even factoring in the music or the 'scene'): genuine grassroots success; never-the-same-show-twice setlists; a deep back catalog that always gets dipped into; a fondness for weird venues; relentless showmanship.

kinda dud, i think, and not just for the all the phishheads. just not my bag, i guess.
though i was way into phish in a period in high school, but not to the extent of a lot my friends (i knew a lot of tape traders/collectors.... i could never understand the point of needing so many damn phish tapes).
i can still kind of enjoy parts of junta though, which is the only phish album i hung onto (when i was 17 i used to have all the major studio releases and a few live albums, including that hampton box set).

I was just reading about Phish covering Neutral Milk Hotel on Stereogum and, you know, I think it make me love them a little bit more for pissing off a whole bunch of those annoying people that hold up NMH as something holy. Some choice comments:
"No one should be allowed to touch this song. This hurt my ears."
"Keep your jam bands off my favorite album. TAKE BACK THE MUSIC!"

of course. excited to watch it!
i was at 12/29, just sort of treated myself to a ticket and went solo in between family stuff up in massachusetts. i really enjoyed it. the first set was very paint-by-numbers but still played exceedingly well, i thought - the little fills and stuff around the edges in the various war horses was all tight and inspired. Second set the Chalkdust was a total mindfuck of dissonance, one of the coolest things I've heard them play in a while. Rest of the set no slouch either. Recommend

so just in case you're serious, i've listened to phish _and_ i've cum with a pussy and no, cumming with a pussy doesn't particularly feel like listening to phish. i'd say it's a "common mistake" but it isn't, really. very, very few people confuse the sensation of listening to phish with the sensation of cumming with a pussy.
i'll also say that like. listening to phish doesn't feel like gender euphoria either. so like i _do_ feel good all the time because of my gender affirming care but not in the same way listening to a really hot phish jam feels.
if you want the best pussy money can by you're gonna probably wanna go to suporn over in thailand. people say amazing things about suporn. he generally has a waitlist but maybe you could skip it on account of being drew carey.
that said i don't find that having a pussy has made a difference in how i cum. there's just not that much difference anatomically between male and female genitalia. the big difference, i've found (and i've found many other trans people say the same) is what hormones i'm on. you _could_ go to thailand and get suporn to give you a pussy, but honestly, you'll probably get better results from spending two years on estrogen.
i wouldn't recommend it, however, simply because you are clearly completely batshit crazy. taking estrogen wouldn't really "fix" that. go deal with whatever other shit you have going on, then maybe you can think about getting based and redpilled and going down the rabbithole. 'k?

Will likely exhaust the 1.0 shows he's done pretty soon (basically a bunch of '97 sbd shows like MSG, Raleigh, Hampton, Denver, '98 Island Tour, one of the '00 Japan shows, a few more) and then will try figuring out which of the recent mixes are worth listening to ... but Phil Everson's jam_central YouTube (just came up in the Dark Star thread) is really the ideal way to listen to Phish, I wish there were more to choose from. Zero vocals, all instrumental, unfussy mixes of composed / jam sections.
I know the Clifford Ball shows pretty well but have probably skipped over the Free for a few decades and it popped up in the instrumental mix ... great sludgy 5min section that sounds like it's from the ALO Tweezer.

hello my fellow nerds. i went to the latter two of the 3 shows in my childhood hometown of albany this weekend and had a lot of fun. they are so precise and open to jamming in all sorts of weird points in the show. it is a well-oiled machine. some of the ballads - esp esp Mountains in the Mist, which is surely among their most tasteful songs - were really gorgeous, with the same careful listening between all 4 band members that goes on in full-on jams. my usually criticism of the modern era is that the machine is TOO well-oiled, and they are so good at moving in unison that the music loses any sense of risk or danger. sunday night had a bit of that feel and i don't know that i'll be replaying it, but it was quite a rocking dance party. folks seem to be pretty consistently rating saturday night lower but i thought they got into way weirder and more interesting spaces at several points in the second set. i was contemplating getting down to msg for a new year's run show or two but i think i scratched my itch for awhile. in any case, check out the 10/26 second set starting at Ruby Waves and at least through Golden Age, and then on 10/27 i thought Kill Devil Falls and Chalkdust were the highlights
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:52 (one year ago)
fyi for those to whom it might mean something who might not otherwise know, they opened the run with "Box of Rain" -- didn't actually say anything about Phil's passing but i imagine that was a pretty poignant moment for those who were there.
oh also the albany arena - currently called MVP but has been through more names to count in my lifetime - put up a banner in the rafter marking Phish as moving into the lead (past the Dead as I understand it) in all time concert ticket sales there - 16 shows. hilariously, the band never acknowledged the banner. i wondered if they were almost embarrassed on behalf of the arena for marking such an unimpressive number? i think the ones they have up at msg are for something in the 50s or 60s
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:57 (one year ago)
lol I hadn't heard about that specific banner, but someone at one of the shows did post a photo of another sad banner that was in the arena - one celebrating the basketball team's first round loss in the NIT
I haven't listened to the full shows yet, but the "Ruby Waves > Fuego" combo from Saturday night's show was some of the best jamming I've heard from 2024, the "Ruby" went really deep and they pretty much deconstructed the "Fuego". Saw some folks on X point out that "Ruby > Fuego" might be another Dead no, since it's basically "Scarlet > Fire".
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 October 2024 17:24 (one year ago)
oh wow that's great, 99% of the fan theories about the unspoken messages behind setlist choices, teases etc. are absurd, but that one is fun to believe
I could go on about the once knickerbocker arena. there are MANY banners celebrating the "achievements" of Siena College, most of them are pretty embarrassing. professional sports teams i have seen play there include the arena football Albany Firebirds, led by the amazing wide receiver Touchdown Eddie Brown, who would routinely get like 6 of his namesake TDs in a game. He went on to father the similarly great but significantly more psychotic NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown. Later on the minor league hockey Albany River Rats spent many years there and while their hockey record is spotty, they are a vaunted contender for most unappealing name for a sports team ever. Siena only moved in when the arena really needed a regular tenant iirc, I used to go see them often in the more appropriately scaled gym on their campus. But I've seen some great Phish shows in that place, as well as REM, Billy Joel, and I'm sure others that I'm not remembering

Not sure if Ivy or anyone else is paying attention to the summer tour so far, but it's shaping up to be pretty special. Stoked to see them three times later this month.
The must hears for me are the "Tweezer > Mercury > Tweezer > Pillow Jets > Tweezer > Golgi" run from 6/22/24 in New Hampshire (definitely check out the first set "Fluffhead" while you are there) and the 43-minute "What's Going Through Your Mind" from Pittsburgh on 6/24. I'm not always a longer jams = better jams guy, but this one is really special imho.
