If, say, a friend w/ the same name as me totally fucking loath/ed "U Don't Know Me", would it be worth my, I mean, his while to give anything else by AVH a spin? (Note: this hate might stem from associative trauma occurring concurrently during the song, Reservoir-Dogs style.) (Or I might just hate beats.) (And fun.) (Yeah, definitely fun.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 March 2003 06:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, it would not be worth your while. Just give all your AvH to me. Thanks.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 14 March 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also "It's alright, I feel it" dark side of the moon mix - the way the bassline only plays on every fourth bar is dancefloor genius...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

David R. -- If you hated "U Don't Know Me," then perhaps the chances of you liking something like a "Little Black Spiders" might be markedly improved... worth a try. Just don't tell me you don't like "Flowerz."

M Matos -- no kidding about Armand being a lame DJ. Have you heard his mix of "Big Love" with his own "Summertime"? Not pretty.

Felicity -- You quoted my second favorite Armand line. First fave: "I'm lookin for them female ejaculates / Spreading that cootchie with the masturbates."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 23 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm with felicity on Killing Puritans, it does have some great moments. i also loved 'u don't know me' but haven't heard 2 future.

plus, AVH has a spectacular ability to piss my friends off - i got in a lot of trouble walking around mumbling the hook from koochy, and 'u don't' has sent more than few of them screaming from the room. so, k-classic.

Dave M. (rotten03), Sunday, 23 March 2003 02:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Felicity--what think of 2 Future 4 U?

So what's up with this new mix disc? 'New York: A Mix Odyssey'

two non-ILM people have recommended this to me. anyone else? It's got Company B "Fascinated" on it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 17 April 2004 01:01 (twenty years ago) link

It looks odd, it has Call Me by Blondie and a few other fucking odd tracks on it.

His new track is FUCKING AWFUL, by the way.

This mix is really FANTASTIC!!!! Restores my faith in HOUSE music.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago) link

might seem dumb, but what is the really long track that is really good. matos should know which one i mean, it was playing when we were out in seattle. its totally famous, i just didnt realise it was him

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:22 (twenty years ago) link

"Flowerz"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:48 (twenty years ago) link

You Don't Even Know Me?

I must get that mix so Spencer, that's recommendation enough!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 06:41 (twenty years ago) link

it wasnt you dont even know me, i know that one

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 06:57 (twenty years ago) link

that track was either "Mother Earth," or whatever track one from 2 Future 4 U was (the one w/the female Wu-Tang affiliate vocalist on it), or it was "Help Me" by Timo Maas; from what I remember it was the latter, so my mistake. but I'm probably wrong, and it is in fact the former, in which case yay!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:28 (twenty years ago) link

'Mother Earth' is a long and quite powerful

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:51 (twenty years ago) link

"Mother Earth" is brill - I also love the follow-up track on Killing Puritans, "Conscience", which rocks the insane repetition trick harder and better than almost anything else ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago) link

witchdoktor was a BIG tune for me 94 ish?

This is where I say "Little Black Spiders" -- the song with the Scorpions sample -- is officially my unexpected listening pleasure of the day.

The extended version of UDON'TKNOWME (with the Orson Welles vocal clip at the start) is god.
also recommend koochy, god created the club, pretty much all of 2FUTURE4U and pro widow.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

All this and no mention of his "Sugar is Sweeter" mix???!!!!

This is one of the greatest tracks to dance to of all time.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, Stevem mentions upthread. I forgive you all.

I love and have absolutely loved "Hear My Name" for some time. Damn. The timing on that vocal track is really good. And I love the spanking video, really. Really.

new stuff is so 'meeeeeh'

blueski, Monday, 21 May 2007 23:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I happened to be listening to Witchdoktor when I saw this thread pop up in the new answers... weird... "Coochie" remains one of my all-time favorite dancefloor-destroyers, given the right crowd. it's so very mixable, too.

DJ Logan5, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 00:07 (seventeen years ago) link

^^^ Ahhh christ what I meant was the b-side to Koochy (now spelled correctly, long as I'm making matters right), which is "Phreeknik", a huge breakbeat / siren / shaker percussion freak-out of a track.

Koochy's just warmed-over-electro-pop comparatively. Now I can sleep.

DJ Logan5, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 04:31 (seventeen years ago) link

No-one has ever ever ever agreed with me about the brilliance of "Conscience" - Armand why did you ruin one of your best tracks by putting some boring taped rant at the beginning of it? :-(

Tim F, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 05:14 (seventeen years ago) link

New album people!

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 07:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I specifically love "Touch Your Toes", "This Ain't Hollywood" and the Company B-esque "Still in Love".

deej, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:52 (sixteen years ago) link

such a beautiful section, from the last minute of the song

deej, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

not something you would think to turn into its own song tho, really great selection by armand here ... you can tell its the kind of idea you'd have after wearing out the grooves on 'steppin into tomorrow'

deej, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link

seeing this thread just now made me pull out my 'witch doktor' 12", which i don't think i've listened to since i bought it. it sounds great! kinda wild-pitch-y.

i really like 'ghettoblaster', but it's so SHAMELESS in it's recycling of 80s club styles. although i guess that's the point. like for each song you can pick out, 'oh there's debbie deb, there's adonis' etc. but it's a fun listen.

one time, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 17:39 (sixteen years ago) link

witch doktor is unimpeachable

blueski, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

re: "Flowerz," had that realization a few months after first hearing it myself.

But, yeah, pretty much it's the best deep house song ever.

So between doing "Work Me Godamit" and this:

I'm pretty convinced he is or was gay for real.

gay "for real"?

I never copped that Bonkers (Dizzee Rascal) was by him til a few days ago. that is an awesome tune.

p-dog, Monday, 19 April 2010 00:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I put "Hear My Name" on a CD-700 for someone this morning. Fantastic song.

clemenza, Monday, 19 April 2010 00:44 (fourteen years ago) link

As opposed to not gay for real (i.e. "Kootchy").

I don't really think he was/is gay, actually, but it's odd how much of a bona fide interloper he was in the early/mid 90s.

who's always getting head from the commissioner (Eric H.), Monday, 19 April 2010 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

What really annoys me about Killing Puritans is that the sleeve has everything listed in this funny code, with symbols for letters - it was a complete mindfuck when I first got the album and I couldn't just put it in Windows Media Player to get the names up
