what is with critics' burning desire to justify this dude's stuff -- its like theyre worried if they dare to say something against it the entire critical apparatus will disintegrate or they'll be consigned as contrarian trying-to-hards

also lex the guy from XL gets off on it cuz it makes him a profit

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 May 2011 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

anyway what rich's post said is what a few of us (including me) said months ago about his use of 'faggot'

the funny thing to me is that either one of two things are going to happen (assuming that ppl are still paying attention to tyler/OF in 5 years): he's gonna grow up and continue saying faggot incessantly and a lot of critics are going to turn on him or he's gonna realize that it's ridiculous/stupid (or worse) and everyone gets to say "told ya so" -- so he's pretty much in a lose-lose situation

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 May 2011 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

thing is it's kind of bullshit for some defenders/press to say 'oh but he's only 19, we all did stuff like that or said stupid shit when we were that age', because i know i thought people saying faggot was bullshit from when i was 13 or younger, same for anyone making retarded rape jokes. "oh those crazy Odd Future kids, they'll grow up soon enough!" ... when exactly? "oh we all had rape fantasies when we were lonely teenagers, don't you remember?" oh, okay. sorry no I don't remember.

Jamie, yr right that that's a bullshit DEFENSE of Ofwgkta, but integral in UNDERSTANDING them and they're appeal. Lots of grown nerds spent their teenage years watching gore, listening to metal, reading Answer Me! and saying shit that would make Tyler barf

i did read answer me and i did totally cringe the last time i saw an issue. ever since i had kids i don't even really want to watch horror movies like i used to. so, my juvenilia remains music, i guess. oh, and the acres of porn in my secret porn room that is behind a fake bookcase at home.

5000th and 5001st posts on this thread are gonna be some variation on "why people odd future?" and "i like them but it hurts meeeeeeeeeeee!"

right?

scott seward, Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

the thing is burzum is almost a perfect point of comparison precisely because there are plenty of nazi metal bands who everybody can take or leave but burzum makes such blazing metal that it's hard to ignore, and from what I gather no-one would give a shit about odd future's homophobia and misogyny if they weren't making really interesting music

Steven Tyler the Creator (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, if they sucked i wouldn't bother. that's a given.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

well also there's the fact that, as far as i know, burzum's music contains zero offensive content---all that is extracurricular. which is why its easier for me personally to rationalize listening to dude's records. with OF (and countless other 'controversial' or 'problematic' artists) the objectionable stuff is front and center, and you can like sing along to it if you want.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

listening to people justify what they listen to in the privacy of their own home is so hilarious and unnecessary. there's not a song on earth that i have to do psychic backflips to justify enjoying. if someone is a loathsome person, i make that decision with my wallet, not my ears

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

its true you have to be told about burzum or read something about him. you have to know his history. but his history is definitely part of the "charm" for a lot of people.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

there was one guy who came in my store when i started playing tyler after i got back from the lame cd store and he said "this is interesting. what is this? there's a lot going on in the background." then he took off.

well, but you can understand how another perspective is "it makes a difference what sort of stuff I choose to engage" - right? I think the argument that what you choose to take private pleasure in eventually informs/effects what kind of person you are isn't really such a hard case to make

Steven Tyler the Creator (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

i'd definitely use it as a scatter gun at the store if people i don't like come in.

yeah i totally get that. but i swear i have seen Burzum invoked on at least a hundred non-Burzum non-metal threads over the years, rarely as anything but a quick shorthand for "hey sometimes nazis make good music!" and at this point it feels like a wearying, useless detour that's inevitable in any discussion about the offensive views or actions of any musician ever.

Whiney you're kinda, forgive me, too old to not be able to draw the distinction between "playing violent video games will make you violent" and "a steady diet of hateful art may have an effect on you as a person"

or you could come up with a new argument. Burzum records are corny as fucking shit too. Like 80% of the time his name is invoked my non-metalheads its on some "David Allen Coe has a song with the n-word huh huh huh" bullshit

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 12 May 2011 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

since the burzum thing seems to have legs...

as far as i know, burzum's music contains zero offensive content---all that is extracurricular. which is why its easier for me personally to rationalize listening to dude's records. with OF (and countless other 'controversial' or 'problematic' artists) the objectionable stuff is front and center

which, perversely, makes it easier for me to accommodate. relative to the likes of burzum, OF's transgressions seem superficial and basically meaningless, like scenes in a gross-out horror movie. that's not to give them a pass, but varg's philosophies are presented in all seriousness and have evident real-world consequences and followers. this makes it MUCH harder for me to give any kind of burzum support a pass - at least in the present moment, while the artist is still alive and his legacy up for grabs.

like if tyler was in jail for domestic violence and expressing his theories on rape as the ultimate expression of oppressed masculinity, i'm sure i'd feel very differently about his art. calling jim goad...
