yeah he definitely knows all about all that indie shit.

would like to read an interview where he talks about what he listens/listened to. is there one?
you dont think effortlessly combining all these disparate hip-hop and punk rock and indie rock sub-movements into something cohesive counts as innovative?
― chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:48 (4 minutes ago) Permalink
not particularly so, certainly not to the extent being bandied about by the guardian. also, 'effortlessly,' is that like stacking-the-deck rock critic buzzword or what
― D40 (D-40), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:54 (fifteen years ago)
i understand 'effortless' when used to describe specific techniques, but not for big high-concept 'blending of influences' ish like that.
― D40 (D-40), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)
yeah that list was definitely intended as a complete and exhaustive list to Odd Future's influences. YOU SURE GOT ME
whiney if you could direct me to what i apparently couldn't read then, i'd appreciate it
― da croupier, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)
"faux-indie" is a strange construction in this context
― always have time for the crystalline entity (contenderizer), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:56 (fifteen years ago)
simply being original can be pretty small-scale innovative anyway. dj quik is original, for sure, and his new record combines a bunch of different styles, but i wouldnt call it 'innovative' in the big-picture sense either
― D40 (D-40), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:57 (fifteen years ago)
no, it makes sense. the effort shows when people try to mash together hip or "interesting" influences without a sense of personal/organic cohesion. buy whiney's description cuz the seams don't show in tyler's work, it's his style, and it seems of a piece.
― always have time for the crystalline entity (contenderizer), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:58 (fifteen years ago)
the other aesthetic thread I pick up from tyler is the childhood innocence laced w/ weirder darker stuff, like he's trying to triangulate some lightning bolt / adventure time axis
maybe this is purely accidental... or maybe it's a clue...

well, i mean the obvious question is who else can do it, D40? I mean, I can see it a little bit in the indie-fueled stuff Cage and El-P were doing at the end of the 00s--(esp "I'll Sleep When Yr Dead" and "Hell's Winter"); but there's still elements of Sid Viciousness and contemporary witchwave and Pharrell (and yes, fashion and Tumblr) that those cats weren't touching
And I say "effortless" because it doesnt seem like a forced mashup like Th Corn Gangg or whatever
― chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)
this album is fucking amazing.

ok so the punk rock component is vague "elements of Sid Viciousness," not any actual audible musical influence.

da croupier, Whiney referenced punk in one post, does he need to name a specific band for you to comprehend?

I haven't really seen Tyler talk in much depth about what he listens to in interviews. This one has a bit about it thoughhttp://www.coolehmag.com/frontEnd/interview.php?i=51&s=101
Outside of your crew who/what do you listen to? Me personally, Stereolab, James Pants, The Liars, Alen Tew, Grizzly Bear, Erykah Badu, shit like that. You’re a Grizzly Bear fan? Yeah, Grizzly Bear swags their shit out. I can’t stand them but that is beside the point. What interests me is that if I had to pick something diametrically opposite the music that you make, it would probably be something like Grizzly Bear. So what attracts you to them? I don’t know, maybe it’s the chords or the way they set their shit up. I don’t listen to much rap, matter fact I kinda hate rap. If I listen to rap it will probably be Clipse, Eminem, Waka Flocka, fucking Nas, Outkast, and Snoop Dog and that is probably it if it’s not Odd Future. People sometimes forget that I am a producer too so I am into jazz and stuff like that… (Interrupting) Oh, I am not surprised so much as curious. Yeah, I am into the chord changes, and chord progressions and how they set shit up and where did that synthesizer come from. I like to listen to shit that I can think of videos while I am listening to. Most rap…I don’t want to sound like no elitist, faggot, backpacker who talks about how much the hate Gucci Man because I hate them…but music now is kinda wack. Pop sucks, rap sucks, most rock is starting to sound the same, and the Grizzly Bear album was one of my top three from last year along with Eminem. They brought some new shit to the table and I am a big fan of that shit. Word, yeah, it was a lot of people’s album of the year, so I am sure you are probably onto something and I am just an old-ass hater. I hate Waka Flocka too. I like Waka’s energy. Waka’s energy is just…oh my god nigga, put on some Waka Flocka around us Odd Future niggas and we go ape shit. I’m not kidding, something clicks and we just start bugging out. Don’t get me wrong, Gucci (Mane) swags it out! Without Gucci, it wouldn’t be no fucking Waka. But I think it’s cause Waka is so young and so fucking energetic that he makes shit niggas can just go skate to and fuck shit up. Like, last week we went egging and we were listening to Waka, hitting houses up. I don’t even have to say nothing about Gucci because he is like, in that legend category to me right now.

it's not even just lightning bolt, but chippendale, his art, and the fort thunder crowd, peter glanz, forcefield, paper rad etc. I see a lot of echoes, even if tyler is barely (if at all) aware of that crowd.
― don't judge a book by its jpg (Edward III), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
john, to defend odd future from whatever strawman said they weren't a beautiful blend of disparate influences (i just said people could have seen the "break from rap orthodoxy" in de la soul myself), whiney mentioned a bunch of indie and mainstream rap stuff (plus toro y moi), then said the band combined punk rock with the indie rock and all the other good. i joked that "pharrell is punk rock now?" he said i couldn't read. i asked him to point out the punk rocker he referenced in his list of influences. he said it wasn't meant to be a comprehensive list. I asked him to point out what i couldn't read. I don't think the problem is i'm not comprehending him, so much as its really easy to rile him up when he's in blurt mode.

the punk thing seems like an easy but misleading call. "radicals" is kinda punky, i guess, but tyler's music doesn't otherwise justify the comparison.
if you're willing to say that juvenile transgression and iconoclastic nihilism = punk, it might make some sense

by the time i was 16 it was starting to sound pretty gross to me, though.
