Tyler has fun messing with people and playing the imp, but sometimes it's like kids in cars yelling stuff at pedestrians — which is only ever funny if you're inside the car.

ilx shout out imo

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

Wonder if Tyler knows what 'homosocial' means.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

The more I read about this record, the less I want to hear it.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

haha ditto

totally thought this too! that was a good piece by nitsuh

course he does, he's so ~smart~ right?

fan on the guardian thread trying to claim that even his rubbish defences in interviews are themselves satirical. eyes rolled so far back in head

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

god that shouting out of car windows thread - i do hope that it went down as a victory for the civilised people who understand that shouting out of car windows is unacceptable in the collective ilx memory

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

but yelling out of car windows is the name of my dog

don't judge a book by its jpg (Edward III), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

it's okay for dogs to do it

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

typical double standard of the specieist

don't really get why it's important or not whether tyler is smart? does he claim to be or something? Do people need to believe he's smart to be able to enjoy the records? i've liked/loved the vast majority of OF stuff but couldn't care less about tyler's smarts or lack thereof.

pandemic, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

I think the lex is conflating his hatred

xpost You see Lex, it's all satire and irony and joking (all of which mean exactly the same as each other) so because Tyler has already made a joke about criticism he is immune to all criticism forever. That's how it works.

I know for me I worry if he is smart because he seems to think he is the "trickster" when in fact he could be playing himself in the long run. There have been too many examples of artists (especially African-American artists) who can take their image to a certain point. Once (or If) the shit hits the fan then they are branded as either that crazy/dangerous/whatever nego that people were once fascinated by but now claim they never liked. The same media machine that lauded them will tack on typical stereotypes to bring them down for the same purpose: money and ratings.

I hope Tyler knows that.

i really do love the idea that ppl on this board are worried that someone might do a google search on nonsense words like "j0hn" or "deej" and find out that it's actually [HUEG INTERNET PERSON] and they have an opinion on a record.

Well, Mr. Deej, I've looked at your file at it turns out you don't like Aesop Rock, I'm sorry but you just won't fit in here.

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

it would take a lurker like 20 whole seconds to match these dudes up with the real names they've been posting here under for years

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

It's more that I'm concerned about people i know irl finding this and figuring out who this is but feel free to keep trying to score points with ilx's most banal bullshit.

D40 (D-40), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

I.e one time my brother was looking for info on an artist and linked me to a thread on here I'd posted in. I don't think it's alot to ask that I keep my irl separate

D-40 & I are on the same side of this ridic non-argument (wtf is so controversial about respecting an onboard-friend's wishes for fuck's fuckin sake, Whiney you're better dude than to take issue w/that) so I am not clowning just lol'ing but "You're yo nature for this board.i recommend not posting on it" gave me a great lol

Steven Tyler the Creator (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Jesus, just looking at the track times on wiki and I'm like o_O

Picked this up over lunch though and still interested enough to look forward to my first listen. At the very least I'm glad I could throw some money to them after all the free music so far.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

ok this is ridiculously good. best beats i've heard on a rap record in forever. or since blackenedwhite at least. i can give or take tyler but he does come hard occasionally.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

hodgy coming in on sandwitches even more epic after forever of tyler. and is there a rap song called 'fish' that isn't dope?

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

Q: is this line in Nitsuh's article OTM?

For all we know, Odd Future could be early instigators of a moment where hip-hop experiences the same spasms rock once did — the moment where its orthodoxies have started to seem old, bloated, or silly, so the anarchic freaks come rushing in to make it their creative playground.

sleepingbag, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

he sort of hedges that one. i dont think theres a v good argument that this is the start of anything new

D40 (D-40), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

I would like to believe that the original draft of that line was "Perhaps the future of hip-hop is QUITE ODD INDEED!"

some dude, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

lol

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

I tend to agree with D-40, it's a huge statement not quite backed up with big arguments. But I like chewing on it, I have to admit.

Whiney G makes me wanna smoke crack (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

I remember lots of AWFUL articles that were all 'lil jon and crunk is hip-hop's punk moment'

Other than Jay, Kanye and Em, I don't think there is some old culture that needs to be killed off. Hip-hop has always done that p naturally.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

there are giant ads for this on some of streets around here now

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

you could have said this about de la soul

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

could you? when?

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

when they rushed in to mock old rap orthodoxies and make rap their creative playground, probably. ever seen the video for "Me, Myself & I"?
