Yeah don't know what that 'ban doran' thing is about. If Suggest-Suggest Bans were riffles this place would be a bloodbath, jeez.

flopson, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

i like shock as much as the next man but i just dont sense any gravitas in much of tylers music

― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:44 (1 minute ago) Bookmark

Hate to say it, but more often than not I hear his raps as sock-on-cock mattress soliloquys as opposed to matey in-jokes.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

Sincerely I'm mortified now. I'm commissioning a feature on Geto Boys to run on the Quietus as a way of salving my slightly necrotic conscience.

PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

its easy to nitpick dorans point about deleting (or whatever) gza emails but i think we all got his point (even if the examples are wrong). hes just saying tyler doesnt care about the old guard. cos yknow hes so rebellious! no seriously, i dont mind that. makes a change. im not even a huge fan of a lot of modern mainstream rap but its obvious OF are trying to set themselves up as going against that. i dont see how this is a bad thing. this is what rap is meant to be about guys. even if OF *are* obvious hipster/rock-crit catnip. that said, isnt tyler working with pharrell? like to see how he can maintain his outsider status working with fucking pharrell.

doran, fuck that, run a feature on necro and ill bill.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

a feature on Geto Boys to run on the Quietus

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, geto boys even get played on fucking 6 music. (only mind playing tricks i admit, but hey). necro and ill bill have more underground cred (and not in the backpacker way either, tho dont see whats so bad about that either, sick of having to apologise for liking backpack shit)

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

before someone guns my 'underground cred' point, i just meant that in a sort of 'true cult status' way.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

lex i haven't read yr article yet (but will & look forward to) but the one complaint i've about your posts itt is the position you come at the music from is "well the music isn't that good anyway" rather than "the music is great but uh" which is fine, but for those who do think the music is (atvl occasionally) great & inspired, all these "y bother its not even as fun to dance to as crunk" arguments are kind of unnecessary & give the impression u kind of just dgi

flopson, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

i often get the impression lex just likes stupid music, or at least, whenever he quotes lyrics, its usually some dumbness.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

(i love(d) lil jon too tho, fwiw)

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

ha lex is possibly my fav lyric quotes poster on rap & r&b threads

flopson, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

the crunk thing wasn't a direct comparison, it was more an example of the ignorant/dubious lyrics i do enjoy (ie i'm not just criticising this on moral grounds)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

i thought the teairra marí lyrics i quoted on this thread were quite smart, observant and kinda brave, titchy

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

back to tyler/of tho, that lil silva remix of yonkers fucking sucks.
tho my faith in silva has been shattered since he did that song with sampha.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

as a big buk fan and an ofwgkta listener, the only major connections I see are the nihilism.
when i think buk i think self debasement, alcoholism, elitist intellectual self-absorption and the power of women over men's lives and i don't hear any of that in tyler.

Stone Colde Sylke Freek (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

tyler is too adolescent to be referenced with bukowski

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, that too. not that it's a reasonable analogy at all, but even jim carroll is a more reasonable referent if solely for the age factor

Stone Colde Sylke Freek (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

there's a dare for you: write a think piece comparing carroll and tyler

Stone Colde Sylke Freek (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

The comparison is purely one of Bukowski's status as thorn in the side of the literary establishment/liberal wind up merchant.

XP: The 40-year-old virgin guy???

PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

Jim Carroll, not Steve Carell.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

ha okay now it's a double dare comparing steve carell to tyler
and do it as an aside to a documentary camera

Stone Colde Sylke Freek (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

but i dont think OF/tyler have that status, not anymore anyway, theyre pretty accepted. maybe not by hip hop heads (english, provincial or otherwise). if you want unaccepted, you should go and see nero/non phixion (will stop mentioning them now), who are all pretty genuinely crazy and paranoid/worrying/unstable.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, that guy. I see what you're saying.

Non Phixion - I have The Future Is Now on CD somewhere.

PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

i can't believe ilx is a now board where people can mention non-phixion with a straight face

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

Tyler has fun messing with people and playing the imp, but sometimes it's like kids in cars yelling stuff at pedestrians — which is only ever funny if you're inside the car.

ilx shout out imo
