flopson OTM, but it works differently for people (critics & fans) who've been engaged with OF for some time, and that's where most of the hype has come from. kind of surprised that anyone who hasn't been following OF would be blown away goblin taken in isolation.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 9 May 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, it's an installment, and makes the most sense that way

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 9 May 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

on the radio yesterday afternoon, DJ ran "yonkers" into immortal technique's "bin laden", kinda funny

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 9 May 2011 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

OF is 2011's chillwave -- a forced non-event that vaporized during its inception

WASHED OUT. WHAT HAPPENED?

cuteforce, Monday, 9 May 2011 22:29 (fifteen years ago)

if you say so

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 9 May 2011 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

i bet its the same critics who praised 'glo-fi' praising this. even if the artists are still doing things, the excitement is completely gone

cuteforce, Monday, 9 May 2011 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

actually there's quite some buzz around the washed out album that's dropping soon

sisilafami, Monday, 9 May 2011 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

there's a difference between what's going on in your head and what's going on outside it

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:12 (fifteen years ago)

He later called his interrogator a "faggot" on Twitter. Most people should be able to judge whether Tyler The Creator is for them or not based solely on this information, thus side-stepping the whole "rape" and "faggots" "controversy".

does not compute

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:22 (fifteen years ago)

"limpid-Plaid style electronica"

thomp, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:24 (fifteen years ago)

"The person who Tyler The Creator reminds me of the most is not Eminem at his Relapse-era most amoral; certainly not the educationally subnormal Geto Boys, Nekro, 2LiveCrew, Cannibal Corpse, or Whitehouse. Neither is it Anal Cunt, XXXManiak, GG Alin, or Gorerotted. Instead, its Charles Bukowski"

oh fuck off really fuck you fuck off thanks fuck off thanks fuck off bye

thomp, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the bukowski thing was 'wtf lol WRONG'

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:29 (fifteen years ago)

tho i dont get why just for calling a journo a faggot, as opposed to all the other people tyler has called faggot, that should make us decide how we feel about tyler. rappers acting like immature prima donnas who dont like interviews shockah.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:30 (fifteen years ago)

anyway, necro>>>tyler

I've put one of these unexpected and slightly daft (but potentially illuminating at the same time) comparisons in about 90% of the reviews I've done over the last decade and it never fails to amaze me that it's only ever provincial, English middle class hip hop fans who get so upset by them. While I'd be lying if I said I didn't realise each time how much upset it's going to cause, it's not the primary or even secondary motivation. I just get bored of reviews that solely consist of, "Well it's ok and it's not that much different from some other OFWGKTA albums, like Peter Sutcliffe fronting Company Flow".

That said, I didn't mean to upset you this much. I'm sure with CBT and medication you will finally get some semblance of your life back after this outrage. You'll probably want to avoid reading my Waka FF piece next week tbh.

PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

to be fair it's probably only provincial middle class english people reading your reviews, so?

Introducing the Hardline According to (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

provincial, English middle class hip hop fans

hahahahaha provincial?

all the way bernt up (tpp), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

Using "provincial" and "English" in the same sentence is kinda redundant in my experience.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:31 (fifteen years ago)

to be fair it's probably only provincial middle class english people reading your reviews, so?

and probably not hip hop fans at that

all the way bernt up (tpp), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:33 (fifteen years ago)

I've put one of these comparisons in about 90% of the reviews I've done over the last decade

well, well done you.

thomp, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

that's a great review john.

reallysmoothmusic (Jamie_ATP), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

Jim In Glasgow: You're probably right but it's not me with galloping status anxiety. I'm just happy that a lot of people read my site, even if a lot of them think I'm a bellend.

Thanks Jamie.

PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

Oh Oscar, with these bon mots, you are really spoiling us.

hahaha, is this like the "plop plop fizz fizz" of britain?

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

"educationally subnormal Geto Boys"

Bit harsh, no? I wouldn't use that phrase about anyone but even if you want to then Scarface doesn't fit. He's smart as hell.

Pop is superior to all other genres (DL), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

It's not really that harsh but it was pointless and I wish I hadn't written it now.

PG Harpy (Doran), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

Language use change is inevitable and organic. My participation in these processes isn't.

This is the kind of double-meaning review-ender I'm always amazed someone would actually write.

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

loool

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

I do like the review, aside from the Geto Boys line. Not sure that a call from the GZA in 2011 represents the siren call of mainstream hip hop though.

Pop is superior to all other genres (DL), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

that geto boys line fucking pisses me off so much

end to end berners (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

i don't want to join ppl baggin on a fellow ilxor, but this line

"Our friend and writer for The Stool Pigeon and this organ Kev Kharas recently went to interview Tyler The Creator."

Makes me think that D0ran is just calling Kev "a total organ"

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

i think the review is p good doran but i think the educational subnormal thing is pretty offensive esp because scarface is so much more insightful and poignant and just better than tyler on every single level and bushwick and willie d are frequently funny and gonzo and in bushwick's case occaissionally sad in a way

end to end berners (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

this thread is a right pain to open in any browser, let alone keep up with, much as i've been trying to. is there any chance of a Pt 2 thread? or maybe separate threads for each of the artists/ albums or whatever?

piscesx, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

Odd future is not competing with the ghetto boys on any level

TTDeej (D-40), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

^this basically

end to end berners (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

and you guys are totally ok with calling first amendment champion and mayoral candidate Luther Campbell "educationally subnormal" in the same sentence?

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

Nope, not OK, and I said so upthread.

"Compared Odd Future to the Geto Boys/My mind is playing tricks on me"

Pop is superior to all other genres (DL), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

the educationally subnormal Geto Boys, Nekro, 2LiveCrew, Cannibal Corpse, or Whitehouse

fyi, i would say everyone in this list besides Necro [sic] is totally smart

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't read a whole lot about OF, even in this thread, and I'm wary of being baited or repeating stuff that's already said, but what seems fresh about Tyler's brand of adolescent hive-baiting is that there aren't many new artists causing this kind of controversy in recent memory. Purposefully upsetting people seemed par for the course when I was a teen in the mid-90s what with Necro, Anal Cunt etc fuelling our Beavis & Buttheaded guffawing. And then suddenly this all became kind of unacceptable or at least the joke had worn thin by the turn of the century. We suddenly expected a certain amount of, i dunno, civility from our recording artists. Being a malicious little prick was no longer seen as cool or funny or subversive - it was just dumb, fratty ignorance.

Or maybe I just grew up, but I don't remember having been exposed to subversive/adolescent lyrical content of this kind post-Eminem/Tom Green.

So yeah, it's not that original or new, but in a way enough time has passed so someone writing these kinds of lyrics has the power to cause controversy all over again - this is amplified by general culture having supposedly matured in its outlook and sensibilities in the last decade.

xpost Now I'm trying to think of a genuinely stupid rapper.
