Taylor Swift - Speak Now (Oct 2010) - hype, anticipation &c

Yeah, it's like the ne plus ultra of "it gets better" videos.

was so happy about this too cuz i was pushing this song hard last year as the frontrunner in this sudden mini-genre, even though it didn't seem to have occurred to taylor's marketing people.

also i did you belong with me at karaoke a few months ago with a bunch of people including jaymc and thoroughly humiliated myself on the chorus, which is wholly impossible for me

maybe they (sensibly) didn't want to associate themselves with katy perry and ke$ha.

"sparks fly" does seem like a natural single, surprised that hasn't happened yet. i think they just gave up in the UK after "mine", though.

ke$ha has an "it gets better" song? I didn't think ke$ha was able to grasp concepts like "change".

i wish 'the story of us' had been the first single. that would've been cool

"Mean" is the country radio single, and she released "Story of Us" to pop radio. She shot both videos a few weeks ago, so a "Story of Us" video should be coming soon.

Story of Us is still one of my favourites on the album, but 'Mean' could potentially be a killer single, if it catches on. Video is fun, and simultaneously less and more hamfisted in its approach to IGB type stuff than Firework and Beautiful and Fuckin' Perfect etc. etc. etc.

there's not a single song on the album that i think is less than great. however the sequencing of better than revenge => innocent => haunted => last kiss has never worked for me.

That was awesome. Hands down my favourite song/video from this project. And Speak Now as a whole hasn't really stuck with me as much as Fearless.

Fave video, really? I think it's a little dull, though maybe that's my feeling about the song. Weird, cos when Speak Now first came out I thought "The Story of Us" was the obvious hit, but now it's kinda faded for me. I think lex said something about it sounding loud and catchy but not actually being catchy, which I sorta agree with.

In the exact opposite way, "Sparks Fly" has really grown on me, and I really hope that's the next single. Such a BANGER, and I love how she manages to sound sultry and excited and terrified and horny and coy all at the same time.

I think the best Speak Now vid so far was the "Back to December" one; all scenes with the ludicrously pretty boy looked like Gus van Sant directed it.

Sparks Fly is the other standout for me. Favourite video might be a little bit of an exaggeration. Mean was a little too on the nose, but good for what it was. Mine was whatever. Back to December was nice and moody, but didn't blow me away.

story of us is among my least favorite from that album

I do like that the boy in it is the least "pretty twink" of all the boys in her videos (aside from the dopey "Tim McGraw" boy), and therefore the most adorable one to me, though maybe it's partially his glasses.

Well, given how totally LITERAL all the music video interpretations have been thus far, Sparks Fly would awkwardly involve T-Swift picking a dude up at a bar for a random hookup, so perhaps they're waiting on that one until they've moved past the "Taylor sings lyrics, screen shows story" stage of the MV campaign.

i don't think taylor tends to make very interesting videos, really. "mean" maybe the best from this campaign, maybe because it's uncomfortably on the nose.

I just love this song, though. The 'we're not speeeeeeeaaaaaking' at the end. Lift-off achieved right there.

lex otm, same for me too. on record it didn't have a spark, but live it made so much more sense. lyrically assertive but with the melody of the chorus a soft centre - the rise and fall of 'whenever you're around'.

sparks fly and enchanted sound like a real 1-2 punch of singles to me.

"Enchanted" is so long though! And I don't see them editing it in such a way that does justice to the song's narrative, not that radio gives a shit about things like that.

Though now that I think of it, my station never lopped off a verse; it did remove the "take a deep breath, girl" at the end, which kinda takes out some of the magic of the song.

That is indefensible. Did they also cut out the "you'll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team" line? Because that's the moment I really went <3<3<3 for Taylor
