album is patchy and definitely plodding but just listening to it as an underground/experimental rap album there is some good stuff i think.

Exactly. It's got a good half dozen great tracks imho, and the middle run of Tron Cat > Her > Sandwitches is pretty barnstorming. Sags badly at the end and yeah could've done with being 4 tracks shorter.

xpost well i dont know, i dont really see the guardian saying that many new rock albums are the one of the best rock albums ever made? like i dont this kind of hyperbole is that common

just sayin, Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

just seems to be taking it up a level thats all

just sayin, Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

Reading the Guardian piece with comments online, it looks like a genuinely held belief (also applied to Earl and Bastard) rather than put in for effect.

For sustained and diverse brilliance, only the Wu-Tang Clan with their numerous side projects come close

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, best bits in "goblin" are the TC asides:

getting more pussy cuz i tell bitches i'm wood harris (as you should)

This line still makes me giggle 7th time through the album. As most have said it's too long but I'm gradually getting into it. Still put Earl, Dena, Rolling Papers, Bastard, (and if we're counting it Frank Ocean) over this but still enough greatish moments that I'll keep listening.

sometimes wish i could cut and paste ilx to the internet so everyone would know we did this already thanks but we're covered

"Say hello to Tyler The Creator"

Do they think they're breaking a new artist? Or is this just the first time they're writing about him?

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

england imo

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

wasnt the wire the first place to write abt them

TTDeej (D-40), Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

Some trolling dude needs to write a "meet Odd Future" article.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Like if 11-year-old kids are spray-painting FREE EARL at their skateparks, I think it's safe to say we've already been introduced..

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

yeah if a group of skater kids has crossed over to other skater kids they've truly arrived as a cultural force

some dude, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

that's how Pennywise got bigger than the Beatles

some dude, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Lol srsly. im sure the average guardian reader knows all abt tyler due to all those conversations they have w/ 11 year old skaters

just sayin, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

There have been six or seven Odd Future pieces in The Guardian since Earl came out but this is the first time they've been given a cover piece. Fair to say that most people who read the music section will know them but a lot of people who just flick through the Guide and read the main articles might not.

I LOVE BELARUS (ShariVari), Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

Whatever.. spin it however you want.. usually if young people are into something in such large numbers, it's not exactly consider difficult to discover..

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

By the way, did you know Tyler's only 19????

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

tim westwood is interviewing them tonight.

tending tropics (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

or its been recorded already and its being broadcasted on radio 1 tonight, whatevs.

tending tropics (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but until an act is an actual 'household name' most publications don't take it as a given that the reader is familiar with them. that's not a mindblowing concept. (xpost)

some dude, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

fair enough.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'm probably assuming they've gotten way more popular than they actually are.. I suppose 1st week numbers of "Goblin" sales will be an interesting indicator of how far they've come..

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

the fact that first week numbers will even exists is probably indicative enough

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

Yes. totally agree

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

I'd love for anyone on ILX copping the smug "KIDS KNOW ABOUT TYLER RETARDS" stance to tell me three things they know about Black Veil Brides

chairfuckers union (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

By the way, did you know Tyler's only 19????

shocked, SHOCKED to learn that he is not an adult

gr8080, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

I don't even slightly get how what I said sounded smug.. I just openly admitted that I'm assuming they're way more popular than they actually are. Let's stretch this out further.

Thought I'll throw in my two cents about Goblin. This album is good. I can understand the "plodding" concept on some songs but I feel like it's just another ILM hivemind catchphrase that will run amok. Tyler's lyrics are very effecting that I overlooked the long running time. Though effecting his lyrics are self-indulgent which is weird considering he hasn't become a household name. The man (a 20 year old man) hasn't had any money to inherit problems like the ones he spoke about in some songs. Hopefully, he will give himself some time to reflect or whatever to think of different subjects to rap about. If he does talk about the same topics on Wolf then he should really shut the fuck up.

I am surprised that people seemed let down over an artist's established aesthetic. I'm all for wanting artists moving forward but at the same time I wouldn't expect Tyler to "break new ground" considering the time frame between the hype of the last album and the recording of Goblin.

I do hope people stop projecting their idealistic male adolescence projections on Odd Future because it's getting a little fetishistic.

lilsoulbrother, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

rapping about hating fame when you're barely famous/not famous is as a part of rap as at this point as beats, so it really doesn't bother me even tho it is pretty stupid

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

It really didn't bother me, but just confusing considering how he wavers between "I want to have creative control and fuck the mainstream" and "I want to win Grammy's and MTV Awards." It's like dude make up your mind on what you want to do because the way the music climate is it's almost impossible to hold on to both ideals.

lilsoulbrother, Saturday, 7 May 2011 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

yeah dude comes off like such a herb when all the tough guy dissing blogs and pop stars posturing gives way to earnest pining for meaningless statuettes

it's only annoying cuz tyler's so aggressively EMO about it, not only using life-pain as explanation/justification for his transgressions, but treating it as an interesting end in itself. though i think goblin pays off, i don't find tyler's (post) teen angst half as compelling as he seems to.

agree w/ lilsoul on the perils of "plodding", but it's hard to resist critiquing the album that way now that the idea's out there. "goblin" (the title track) is both a mission statement and a dare in that regard, dragging out a fairly simple idea & soundscape so that you get some time to settle in with the aesthetic. bored me at first, but i've come to like it. "yonkers" and "radicals" keep the energy up through what i think of as Side One. great opening.

Side Two, in my mind, runs from "she" through "tron cat", and again, it works well, balancing downtempo beats with melodic hooks ("she"), crass jokes and dense, skillful rapping (especially on "nightmare" and "tron cat"). "nightmare" strikes me as the album's centerpiece, placing horror's emphasis not on cartoonish transgressions, but on a realistically pitched, if overwrought, self portrait. hard not to be reminded here of kanye's MBDTF, both in the relentless focus on an inner landscape, and in the use of that landscape to cynically beg indulgence for misbehavior.

Side Three begins to bottom out a bit, not terribly, but the run from "her" through "analog" is salvaged mostly by "sandwiches" (an album standout). "her" isn't bad, though it retreads "she" less successfully (no frank ocean hook).

and i hit a wall in the closing stretch. "bitch suck dick", though the joke is plainly obvious, just about did me in the first time through. finally found all the cartoon misogyny simply misogynist and gross and unfunny at that. it left a bad taste, is what i mean, and in its wake, 8 fucking minutes of molasses-paced "window" lost me. after living with the album for a few days, though, i've come to terms. i mean, i can't claim i'm not here, in part, for straight-up "shock value." i am. and if you're in it for the shocks, how can you claim to be offended by such trivial provocations? i caught feelings, lol.

in its defense, "bitch suck dick" brings some hi-energy chaos to what would otherwise be an unbroken, late-album slog, and it's clear that what i'm calling Side Four is intended as a conceptual summary statement, like side four of the wall, where the narrator's madness finally overtakes him completely and reality crumbles. you get the unbridled psychotic id on "bitch suck dick", an intervention collapsing into mass murder in "window", a comically out-to-lunch musical interlude ("AU79", like a brain set to an dead channel), and a final "tear down the wall" exclamation point in "golden". not sure it was all necessary, but the narrative carries me through where the music wanders, a happy fate for any concept album.

taken as songs, there are probably only about 8 tracks here that completely work for me, but taken as an album (and that's clearly the intent), it all pretty much works. i like it.

Another Guardian / Observer piece on Tyler today. The suggestion that nobody has heard Goblin yet's a strange one. It's interesting that neither of the articles were written by the paper's more regular hip-hop contributors.

I LOVE BELARUS (ShariVari), Sunday, 8 May 2011 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

presumably it was written before the album leaked like 2 days ago?
