Looking up its chart history on Billboard, F**k You didn't really start making an impact on the Billboard Hot 100 till after the Grammy performance. But then again things also seem kind of messed up in that there are seperate chart entries for "Forget You" and "F**k You", so I'm not entirely sure.

If you guys remember anything past what you ate for lunch, there was a big OH WOW moment when the viral "fuck you" video leaked with the kinetic text and became and enormous MEME and subject of THINK PIECES before it was available for actual sale.

When it ultimately DID become available for sale there was a lot of people--myself included iirc--who figured it would be immediately #1 or at least top 10 because it was the biggest "talked about pop moment" we remembered in years, or at least since like the week "Hey Ya" dropped. It ultimatly debuted at like #30 or something because the internet hivemind is like a drop in the bucket of reality; and it took like 8 months of steady grinding and grammy and snl appearances to actually make the song something that registered in the America that's not refreshing their browsers to see what pfork gave fleet foxes

as for what maura said about itunes -- i agree & elektra would be smart to pony up for some prominent placement on the itunes front page, but if it doesn't catch on on radio -- and i don't think it really will -- itunes will only take it so far

some dude, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

i mean it's kind of hilariously meta that Whiney is so far inside the blog bubble that even his "lol internet myopia" rants are completely disconnected from reality

some dude, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

In the US, the song debuted at No. 69 on Hot Digital Songs and No. 96 on the Billboard Hot 100.[32] The song originally peaked at No. 9 in 2010. But following Cee-Lo's performance of the song at the 53rd Grammy Awards with Gwyneth Paltrow and puppets resembling The Muppets, "Fuck You!" had a resurgence in popularity and climbed back up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching No. 2 in its 26th chart week (making it one of the slowest climbs ever into the No. 2 position).

I imagine the kids watched it a few times on youtube.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah "slowest climb" means how long it took to get to No. 2, not that it had no significant airplay in its first few months of release. this is really basic correlation vs. causation stuff.

some dude, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

deej, i said "iirc" and then it turns out i didnt rc. i hang my head in shame.

bananas foster wallace (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

no diss to j0rdan -- we're all wrong about shit from time to time -- its just completely lol that one of the times where j0rdan was most offtm is where whiney would plant his "i see through EVERYTHING" flag

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

btw "get a room" is the dumbest lamest fuckin garbage a person can sling but can Whiney & some dude & D-40 be given their own music board & group-banned from ilm so that threads top becoming this fucking high school lunchroom every goddamn day? y'all're smarter than this but I am a living proof of the maxim that "smarter than that" is often theory not practice
