sorry for being troll-y when quoting aero -- the point was that he wasnt actually partaking of witty repartee but was engaging in a serious argument that you cosigned -- which contradicted your assertion that u were simply busting my balls.

like, i get aero's point wasnt per se about me in this instance, but why were we even discussing it? what did it have to do w/ the matter at hand if you were just joking around? it was brought up because you were criticizing something id written -- pretend it was in jest if you want but that makes no sense. we were, in fact, discussing the writing -- so, was i overreacting to 'jokes' or not? cuz i thought we were having a serious discussion

some dude i get a total 'have your cake and eat it too' vibe from this whole thing -- you get to be critical, but can back away when i take offense because you're just joking. i mean, you can claim its a 'persecution complex' but that doesnt explain why it doesnt bother me when flopson or j0rdan say it, but when u do it comes across like criticism.

aero's post had a friendly and familial air that, obviously, left the building soon after. your manner is can be extremely severe, especially when other people are trying to keep the mood light or contribute some levity or just say anything other than "deej otm" without you taking offense.

like, you may notice that when you call me a dick or whatever i don't spend my next 10 posts explaining why i'm not and never have been a dick and you started it. me being less squeamish than you about being the bad guy or just being wrong or overstepping a line doesn't actually mean that you by default are right.

yes & i apologize for characterizing his post the way i did because it confused my primary pt which was that this wasnt just a series of jibes but had crossed into a 'serious' discussion.

hey ignore me or don't, it's all good, obviously you should be able to defend yourself if you think someone's being unfair, even jokingly. i'm just saying the earnest 700 word response to a one-liner kind of inherently raises things beyond "jokes bruv" in a way that i find kind of impossible to take seriously.

my main takeaway from this convo is that you'd be totally fine with someone disagreeing with or making fun of something you said IF you said something wrong and/or unintentionally funny, which in your opinion has never happened and probably never will.

yeah but ... you do obsess over drum sounds. & yeah, i obsess on some artists that I think are underrated, but i could also say SOME DUDE'S WORLDVIEW IS DISTORTED BY HIS OBSESSION WITH DRUM SOUNDS, and you could say DEEJ IS LOST IN HIS MYOPIC RAP WORLD, and they are both gonna be interpreted differently! in my case it felt like you were selling my actual analysis short but not in a way that comes across as 'thats our deej' but like, 'deej has lost perspective'

are you asserting this is the first time anyone on ilx has accused you of not being able to take a joke or have a sense of humor about yourself?

i guess what im saying is, im careful not to 'lose perspective' or draw connections where i dont think there are any, so when you were clowning like id failed to do that it felt like you were dissing my writing & legitimacy rather than the fact that im a fan of whatever rappers.

it is true that hardly anybody has any idea how to record drums any more - take a record with well-recorded drums to any decent mastering engineer & you'll see the guy's eyes get wide & he'll be like "WHERE'D YOU HAVE THIS DONE, WHO DID THIS" and you'll hear the horror stories of the garbage that gets brought into mastering facilities with instructions to "clean it up"

yeah esp because like it's most what you DON'T do, like all records used to have p good drum sounds until the 80s

im going to rewrite that

im careful when it comes to approaching my writing to keep as much perspective as i can so the audience can trust what im saying, to avoid drawing connections that dont exist, or being anything other than 100% honest (as much as that is possible) when writing about this stuff, so when you were clowning the writing it felt like you were mocking my writing rather than my interest in the aforementioned rappers. which i will put up with from anonymous ppl on message boards, but i take the writing itself seriously, and if you make some joke about it that feels like youre arguing with how ive written something, i'll probably respond seriously. people are defensive about their writing!

what's yr method for lovely drum recordings? it has always seemed hard from my v limited home studio type experiences.

i mean i guess i dont understand why that would surprise you or that id take it seriously -- its not the joke about me liking jacka that pissed me off (sorry not trying to keep you guys from this actually-interesting tangent)
