the famous neolithic composer?

eid orb (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

the poor sap could never fathom playing parallel fifths on an ARP2600

corey, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

As for the 12 tone composers, they were really something of their own. Their fixation on dissonance was an intellectually interesting idea that sadly couldn't ever sound anything but shit. And musical skills is partly about learning how to avoid music sounding like shit, so there...

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

thanks, I can now save years of my time by skipping music school since I already know half of what entails musical skill.

corey, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

The other half is "being middle class" so you're probably pretty much done.

SteakNique (®2011 Ulillillia) (Phil D.), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

just for reference, which chords should I avoid in order to not sound like shit?

corey, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

half-diminished 7ths are OK but aug9s are right out

The ones that don't have a name.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

They all have names!

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

cool, so I can use this and this

corey, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

Generally, perfect pitch makes notation obsolete though.

!

Does perfect pitch also imply perfect timing?

lol headexploding xpost

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

also according to Geir everybody with steady-tone tinnitus is a genius, because guess what, if you've got an F# whistling away in you ear 24/7, you have perfect pitch

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

stop stop i'm already dead

i've got blingees on my fisters (darraghmac), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

Oh shit if I can just sing a C# above it I've got an act I can take on the road.

SteakNique (®2011 Ulillillia) (Phil D.), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

They all have names!

So, if you play C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, B Flat and B at the same time, what is that chord called?

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

Berg uses a 12-note chord in the Altenberg Lieder iirc

corey, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

xpost craptastic

markers, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

xpost to geir's chord well, I don't know! But there will be some sort of "C diminished 9th augmented 10th etc etc"

Mark G, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

Well.. Still it was very much that kind of chord I was thinking of, and typically, Berg used it.

Generally, chords that were not used by Debussy, Strauss, Ravel nor Mahler probably should have remained unused.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

Not very quickly, but I can. Generally, perfect pitch makes notation obsolete though. The most genius musicians always have perfect pitch.

― Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, April 27, 2011 11:23 PM (35 minutes ago)

not to continue the geir pile on, but as a guy who knows some stuff, that bolded part is uh completely insane and actually makes no sense.

The Band Perry is the drummer for Gay Dad (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

like so if an orchestra was trying to learn a piece you would i dont know have a different orchestra play it for them or hum it at them individually or

The Band Perry is the drummer for Gay Dad (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

No see because as long as the composer is also the conductor, he just hums the entire score simultaneously for the orchestra, who also have perfect pitch and can match him in real time.

SteakNique (®2011 Ulillillia) (Phil D.), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

hahahah xp

SteakNique (®2011 Ulillillia) (Phil D.), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

oh, Strauss?

corey, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

this thread is entertaining because it shows how someone can be so ill-aligned with truth

corey, Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

so basically we need a whole bunch of tuvan throat singing composers to get this ball rolling, i am all for it

The Band Perry is the drummer for Gay Dad (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

I doubt there has ever been an orchestra where all members had a perfect pitch. But then, with today's technology, you have the one man band. So there.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 28 April 2011 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

"so there"

re: The entire notion is simply preposterous. It's not even ridicule-able, it's just fucking stupid.

You mean the notion of perfect pitch? Or Geir's notion that all great musicians have it?

wk, Thursday, 28 April 2011 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

well perfect pitch def exists, but it is super rare - perfect relative pitch is more common. the bigger ridiculous thing here is the idea that it somehow replaces musical notation because again the two things are not actually related.

The Band Perry is the drummer for Gay Dad (jjjusten), Thursday, 28 April 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

The latter xp

SteakNique (®2011 Ulillillia) (Phil D.), Thursday, 28 April 2011 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

guys I have been telling you for years that Geir on classical is like me on chemistry i.e. I do not know jack shit about chemistry. I can name some chemicals but do not let me near your beakers and burners I will just break shit & do not argue with Geir about classical he has some vague ideas he copped in school 20 years ago and didn't fully grasp.

^^

probably wouldn't have the few gray hairs that I do now (I'm 24) if I'd stuck with trumpet (or maybe not, my struggles would have been simply transposed onto something else).
