Nabisco would be high up in a list of "posters who have influenced the posting styles and argumentative approaches of ILX" (in ways beyond mere phrases like "OTM" - of which Nabisco was beneficiary 10 billion times more than user).

There's probably been a thread on that topic.

In that regard I would say:

Nabisco - top shelf logic
Ethan - top shelf trolling
Ned - top shelf largesse
Dog Latin - top shelf challops

My second division would be:

Some Dude - top shelf balloon-puncturing
Geir - top shelf posts consistently in character
Sinker - top shelf equation-speak
Dave Q - top shelf contraristanning

Most other posters are combos of the above, e.g. Lex = Nabsico X Geir, Vahid = Nabisco X Ethan, rtc = Ethan X Dave Q.

Probably needs to be a shout to Tom E here although I suspect he automatically floats above any Big Four.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:17 (fifteen years ago)

The werewolf threads were all time.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:20 (fifteen years ago)

If I'm being serious, then Tom, Ned, Nabisco, and Sinker are the four who have most influenced my deportment / thinking / writing in an ILM context.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 14 April 2011 09:26 (fifteen years ago)

Marissa Marchant
Mariesa Sabriel
Crispin Glover
Norah Jones

Were i to choose, using tim/mouthy's criteria on a personal level (posting style, musical influence, reflection, arguments, challops) particularly on ILM, I'd say: definitely Lex, Tim F and Matt DC - after that it's a toss-up between a number of posters including Mouthy, Whiney, DJ Martian, Ned, Mark G, Nickalicious, Seward, Johnny Fever and loads of others.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 14 April 2011 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

NABISCO

Ned and Tom and two others.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 14 April 2011 10:32 (fifteen years ago)

(As in maybe two militant anti-rockists such as Lex and Marcello)

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 14 April 2011 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

People here are always comparing Lex to Geir, which I can see, but I think Lex's critical parameters are even more arbitrary than Geir's. As far as music goes we have little in common, but we have similar pet peeves, and it always seems to me that when he rails, it's always imo against the worthiest targets (the indie hype machine, laddish idiocy)

Same thing w Aerosmith, who may be similar to Nabisco, but is a great writer in his own right and brings top-shelf psychological insight into everything he posts...

The big four of ILM are

War
Famine
Pestilence
Death

Mark G, Thursday, 14 April 2011 10:43 (fifteen years ago)

Death is one of the Big Four of death metal iirc

car's not yellow, it's chicken (Pillbox), Thursday, 14 April 2011 10:50 (fifteen years ago)

War is one of the big 4 of Latin funk too, except when they aren't

I wouldn't call Lex or Geir's attitudes arbitrary - quite the opposite to be honest.

xpost Please let there be a band called Famine. Oh look, there is...

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 14 April 2011 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

Best thing about most of these inclusions is that they're prone to the sort of multi-paragraph considered thinkpost that kill debates with how OTM they are, and then you have Ned who is impossible to leave out because he has the power to just post an emoticon and have everyone go "Yes! Ned OTM"

Haha, too kind. Most of my lengthy responses are definitely from the earlier days of the board but one still has to throw in as one can.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 April 2011 12:42 (fifteen years ago)

I would definitely withdraw myself from the initial list and substitute Alex in NYC. And probably slip J0rdan S. out to slip Alfred in. So, Ned/Alex in NYC/lex/Alfred

This lineup would really be Wilson, Lloyd George, etc. I get to be Clemenceau though.

Hey Look More Than Five Years Has Passed And You Have A C (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 14 April 2011 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

haha top shelf balloon-puncturing

some dude, Thursday, 14 April 2011 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

xpost - just so long as I'm not Wilson!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

haha top shelf balloon-puncturing

yeah I don't disagree with this at all, but I'm not quite sure what it means--I'm kind of hoping some good poster can point me in the direction of examples of ^this

amphetamine fueled scholar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

There needs to be a top shelf hypeman in there as well although that might be covered by Ned's top shelf largesse.

Sure there's a straight balloon-puncturer who precedes Some Dude but I'm struggling to think of who.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

Jess was a Vahid X Some Dude cross avant la lettre.

Which in some ways made him the ultimate ILMer.

Tim F, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

pretty sure it just means i have a tendency to burst other peoples' bubbles (i.e. being a wet blanket or spoilsport) but in a top shelf way i guess, which i think is fair to say but i'm not gonna provide my own highlight reel here

xpost -- wow yeah it's definitely an oversight that noone's 4 has included strongo hulkington so far

some dude, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

all the guys with names like Mark C, Matt P, Mark DC, they should all just be one poster

no yeah Alex in Baltimore was my previous dn before some dude

some dude, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

It's less about being a spoilsport and more about making people look ridiculous seemingly without trying.

It's a skill I've never cultivated so I can envy without feeling resentful or competitive.

There's at least one thing fairly loveable about most everyone listed in this thread.

Tim F, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

Matt P
Mark (D)C
luke gretton
J0hn D.

Davek (davek_00), Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

I've been Johnny Fever since 2003 (after using my real name before that). Have thought about changing it a few times over the years, but I can't think of something I like more.

That's why they call me (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:55 (fifteen years ago)
