sade is an artist where i can entirely understand other people's favorites & sometimes feel like that might actually be my favorite after all

I'd like to pick something less overt than By Your Side, but its just not possible, its the best (my favorite). Feel No Pain is my second favorite, for what its worth.

is the mastering job alright? several amazon reviews (i know i know...) mention that the mastering is botched, overloud, full of digital distortion and clipping. i was gonna pick this up, but—confirm/deny?

ilxor, it sounded fine to me. it sounds slightly "bigger" and more detailed, but not massively so. i heard no "digital distortion and clipping" at all but bear in mind i'm also the person who doesn't believe in that audiocompression thing that nick s keeps going on about.

It's definitely closer to the brick-walled aesthetic than the prior best of if you look at the waveforms. However, I don't hear clipping or distortion, just a shift in the dynamics towards "bigger and brighter". I don't feel it is as ear-tiring to listen to as typical brick-walled recordings but your mileage may very.
