I think songs like Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd, Old Dirt Hill, and Dancing Nancies deserve recognition if not the sappy Satellite and Typical Situation.

Doing something outside the norm of what they're known for, the Nappy Roots are crossing genres in the New Year. Their latest is group member Skinny Deville's new collaboration with the Dave Matthews Band.

On their new single, titled "A Divine Intervention At 55th," the group crosses sounds between rock and hip-hop. How did it happen? Well, Deville said the team up came about after the two hooked up while on tour, an experience he said he can barely explain.

"I was high every hour back then and I have never seen anything like it [touring and performing with the Dave Matthews Band]," said Skinny Deville. "People were camped out as if it was a KOA Campground. We did two nights in each city because of the attendance. I do remember the food was excellent and the beer was cold [backstage with DMB]. They balled out more than the biggest rapper could have. We had one bus and they had like ten black matching buses, with every member of the band having their own bus. They were baller status for real."

Those "only jealous because they sell" comments are particularly funny, considering a large portion of the ILM posters are into stuff that is considerably more mainstream (as in appealing to really young kids and everything) than Dave Matthews has ever been.

And btw. the only thing this thread needs to be really complete is that Dave Matthews himself finds the thread on Google and does a post here.

I was never really a fan, BUT:

a) respect is due to an awesome musician

b) my GOD, "Two Step" is an awesome son, thanks in no small part to Moore's

Also it doesn't matter where you pause the video, you're guaranteed to capture Willie pulling any one of a number of LOL expressions.

overblown? that would seem to apply to those guitars far more than dave's acoustic version. i guess you're referring to the vocals? dave's version is a hell of a lot more expressive than willie, who seems to be having a conversation while making some funny faces. or were you giving him extra points for his iconicity and vocal tone?

willie's kinda like cassandra wilson here - interpretation that's worthwhile on its own terms but is only faintly expressive of the song itself

Oh, on a side note: I have two dear friends who love DMB - and they both are lawyers. :-)

But that also means that I've been dragged to more DMB concerts than I care to admit
(OK, I admit - four). I'm not much of a concert-going person, but it's still strange to realize that nearly half of the concerts I've attended were those of the DMB. If you saw my record collection you'd understand. Anyway, carry on.
