I really like the backing track. But then they kinda ruin it by rapping poorly over top.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
but, still with the distortion pedal vocals? really guys?
That's almost like saying "Still with the harmonica? Really, Dylan?"
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 17:49 (fifteen years ago)
reissued instrumental version of paul's boutique would pretty much be the only way to get me to buy beastie boys product in 2011.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)
seriously, though, dylan should have cooled it with the fucking harmonica years ago.
lol
― in my world of loose geirs (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)
the difference is the harmonica is an instrument, one that sounds nice
the distortion pedal vocals thing is a one-trick pony that SOUNDS SHITTY
Eh, their penchant for distorted vocals has never bothered me at all I guess. Sometimes they use that trick, sometimes they don't. I've never heard them use it when it made absolutely no sense to do it.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)
am i hearing this right? 30 seconds in and they've rhymed "this" with "this"?
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)
i just don't understand why aging, past-prime rappers are so obsessed with rapping about how they're knocking all the other rappers out. there are so many subjects they could tackle, and instead it's just "woo! we just slayed all the wack competition!" and no you fucking didn't.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
I'M TAKING MCS DOWN WITH LETHAL RAP INJECTIONS!
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)
i just don't understand why aging, past-prime rappers are so obsessed with rapping about how they're knocking all the other rappers out
uh this is what hip hop is about...? do you ask yourself why young, shitty rappers are so obsessed with rapping about this very same thing?
― in my world of loose geirs (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
I dunno, I feel like the old guys go off more on this than the young guys, who have materialism and sexual violence to entertain themselves with as well
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:16 (fifteen years ago)
also the drug trade
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:17 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, the beastie boys should really go back to rapping about penetrating girls with wiffle ball bats, good call, anthony

sorry if I was being a little too tongue-in-cheek there, but I didn't mean to suggest that the Beasties had to go back to the PBR, just that allegedly enlightened codgers going on about how they're blowing the competition away cracks me up
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

i refuse this false binary and continue to say this new song sucks
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)
they just suck in general kinda.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:38 (fifteen years ago)
this isn't a new thing.
I wish Yauch would direct videos for other people, Horowitz would produce music for other people and Diamond would judge a competition show or find hip-hop scenes in other nations for the Travel Channel or something
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:40 (fifteen years ago)
diamond still look like skeletor? frightening.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)
it's not hurting Steven Tyler's TV career any
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
kinda OTM, but Yauch is making docos and producing films for other people (or was until, you know, cancer). actually when was the last time Adrock produced a half-decent record? I would have bought ten more albums like the first BS2000, but the shitty twee-synth-pop of the second was a jawdropper, and the Latch Brothers remixes I've heard all suck.
― Ita Buttrock (sic), Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:05 (fifteen years ago)
+1 for Diamond aping the Skeletor vibe
I don't think the new single is bad at all. Could almost imagine making some noise if surrounded by sea of bodies at Roseland.
On their side in general, but that's probably because Licensed to Ill was one of the first cassettes I ever bought, back in '87 (along with No Jacket Required and The Joshua Tree, shudder). And hell there aren't a lot of bands from that era that are still around and least trying to make music. So Beastie it up.
― calstars, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:19 (fifteen years ago)
there are WAY too many bands from that era still around making music. every metal band and every punk band that ever put out a single or an album in the 80's is right now on tour. hey we all have to pass the time somehow. god bless them.

Really super psyched for the new album based on what I've heard.

Gonna try to watch the full thing tonight.

Elijah nails Ad-Rock tho, tis true
― The Everybody Buys 1000 Aerosmith Albums A Month Club (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 23 April 2011 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
I dunno, i liked how it was a long music video, and the cameos were pretty fun...it all seemed in the spirit of the original (shrug)
― VegemiteGrrl, Saturday, 23 April 2011 02:40 (fifteen years ago)
Elijah seems to kind of get the movement of Ad Rock, the other two have the look but it sort of ends there with them.
And i dunno, the long knot-untying joke was kinda funny to me
but I dont hate any of those dudes and i lay my Beasties stan cards on the table, lol

(It takes a few minutes to start...but !!! they set up a boombox in the middle of an empty Madison Square Garden and are playing it into the PA!)

not sure how much MSG is contributing but I like the swampy dubby vibe of the tracks I've heard so far

digging it so far...good funky vibes, kind of an old school Paul's Boutique feel to a lot of it

― BIG YNGWIE aka the malmsteendriver (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:41 (fifteen years ago)
paulhw way off the money, this is surprisingly good and I'm finding I like it a little more with each listen. I mean, yeah, we can talk a little bit about the lyrics being corny and lots OF shouting EVERY other WORD but, c'mon, thats been the case for a long time now.
― 'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:44 (fifteen years ago)
yea that's kinda like criticizing Prince for squealing, I mean, it's been the Beasties' MO since they went from hardcore to hip hop.
― BIG YNGWIE aka the malmsteendriver (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:45 (fifteen years ago)
and personally I adore the Beasties goofiness
i was one of the few who liked To the Five Boroughs, but it was clearly still a low point in their catalog. this is soooooo refreshing.
― BIG YNGWIE aka the malmsteendriver (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)
Listening to the full album and my enjoyment is kinda dependent on how long I can go without focusing on the lyrics (did you know these guys are crushing the competition?). Music's fun when it doesn't get too trudgy - def feels like a step up from 5 Boroughs.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:16 (fifteen years ago)
This is a pretty good record, you know?
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 7 May 2012 08:46 (fourteen years ago)
Way more interesting musically and with much better tunes than 5 Burroughs.
Totally in agreement. I ended up listening to it a lot over the course of 2011, and again over the last few days.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 May 2012 09:19 (fourteen years ago)
same here. The highlight is the 1:56 "Funky Donkey."
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 May 2012 12:25 (fourteen years ago)

it disappointed me b/c I heard the awesome record store day single with those DJ Hero mixes with DJ Shadow and the Daft Punk samples and it briefly made me wonder if the new album was going to be a cut-n-scratch DJ thing, like a new Paul's Boutique
