saw liturgy live opening for shrinebuilder and thought they had promise. didn't love their first lp but this new track is way more to my liking. if the whole album sounds like a circle/meshuggah hybrid, then I will be very happy. kind of ridiculously catering to my personal tastes there.

what interview, ag?
― original bgm, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:57 (fifteen years ago)
if the whole album sounds like a circle/meshuggah hybrid, then I will be very happy
that's not how I'd've described it, for the most part it's fairly faithful-sounding BM but w/ more fucked up drumming and some Glen Branca walls of guitar here and there
I think it's terrific

― that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 12:35 (fifteen years ago)
wow, those are some public speaking skills alrightfor me it's not what that guy (righty) saying, but the way he says itso so so so "we're all sensitive" guy not quite as lol, but maybe i just don't watch these interviews much?
i like their music ok though
― Ralpharina (La Lechera), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 13:14 (fifteen years ago)
ooof, that interview.
hmm. like I said, haven't heard the album yet, but the new emphasis on using playful time sigs in a hypnotic, repetitive way on "generation" was definitely what I was vibing on. what you're describing sounds pretty good but I could definitely go for a whole album of tracks working the "generation" model.
― original bgm, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:21 (fifteen years ago)
My wife (watching that Liturgy interview over my shoulder): "They make black metal? They look like indie boys."
Me: "They're from Brooklyn."
Wife: "Ah."

― original bgm, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:52 (fifteen years ago)
you mean " yeah, it's like, they so so so so do make black metal? but yeah it's i dunno not like black metal black metal so yeah um they're from brooklyn"
― Ralpharina (La Lechera), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:56 (fifteen years ago)
No I mean "they look like indie boys cuz they live in Brooklyn."
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 15:04 (fifteen years ago)
Liturgy album is great!
― Algerian Goalkeeper,
^^ have you listened to the album? how's it like?
i enjoyed 'high gold' way more than 'generation', prob because i was way more into that kind of stop/start instrumental dynamics a couple years back (when i was into don cabarello, june of 44 et. al). nowadays it just kind of, err, bores me? (not that i found 'generation' bad, by all means. only not that much interesting)
also looking fwd for the new weakling...
btw, are there any recent releases by bone awl? the alkerdeel record from last year was A+
― rusty_allen, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 15:06 (fifteen years ago)
but you could close your eyes and still hear it in the way they talkedthat's what i meantdoesn't matter if they look like hanson or noti just never ever want to hear them speak extemporaneously ever again
― Ralpharina (La Lechera), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 15:15 (fifteen years ago)
i didn't think there was anything wrong with that interview?

Got the new Krallice in today's mail.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
I'm supposed to interview Liturgy dude for a mag I will not name (not a metal mag, but not The Wire either). I hope he's less of a d-bag when we talk, otherwise the recording will contain many, many slapping sounds.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 15:30 (fifteen years ago)
make sure to note them in the transcript

New Krallice album = awesome.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, that dude is pretentious and punchable as fuck, and his band looks utterly uncomfortable throughout - you can see them thinking "oh, dude, don't say THAT," but just like when some folks here were talking about how Oneohtrix comes off in interviews, I kinda respect his complete candor and the fact that I think he KNOWS he's being a pompous ass. Dude would be making a lot more friends by towing the line, but he clearly doesn't give a shit. Gotta respect that.
Dude to the immediate right of Hunt Hendrix or whatever his name is a dead ringer for Eddie Vedder, btw.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)
"transcendental black metal manifesto" aside, most of that interview was them talking pretty bluntly about how they put together & perform their music, which i liked

otm - I seriously have no idea what individual line or observation in that interview footage ppl have any actual issue with
oh no he paused to consider the next part of his sentence and used vaguely classical terminology to describe part of his music, what a worthless human being
― 1000 Vults Of Nult (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
Dude, look how self-satisfied he is at 0:50.
I just pre-ordered the album, man, I'm just saying. Dude kinda comes off sorta

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 23:37 (fifteen years ago)
it was quite good. Listening to the Fen/De Arma split, anyone know if De Arma have anything else out?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 7 April 2011 03:05 (fifteen years ago)
I interviewed Liturgy a couple years ago. The dude struck me as very sharp.
And yeah, the new Krallice is fantastic, especially the second half, when it really kicks into high gear.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 7 April 2011 04:33 (fifteen years ago)
looking fwd for the new aderlating (gnaw their tongues side project). 'devotional hymns' was such a recurrent listen.
also (usually) worth checking : oaks of bethel and njiqahdda (tho the amount of releases makes it almost inhumanely possible to keep track)
^^sort of note to self, actually. ah
― rusty_allen, Thursday, 7 April 2011 11:23 (fifteen years ago)
I've had to resort to keeping an actual list of Njiqahdda releases that I can tick off. Not really felt the last few (well the last few I got, there's been at least a handful since), so perhaps I need to let go. Will give them a little longer though.

emailed the label but no reply, guess they might be busy with something...
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 9 April 2011 23:47 (fifteen years ago)
i haven't heard lots of proper black metal, or even false black metal, but i get the feeling that the rhythms on that liturgy album are a little unusual. does such a sustained morse-code/telegraph rhythmic idea show up on any well-known black metal albums?
― j., Sunday, 10 April 2011 03:36 (fifteen years ago)
Drudkh spinoff with Neige (Alcest) = Old Silver Key

Liturgy's rhythms are unique. Talked about it with Hunt-Hendrix the other day.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 13:57 (fifteen years ago)
Liturgy's rhythms are quite reminiscent of Zach Hill and Weasel Walter.
― sarahel, Sunday, 10 April 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)
The aim of this new project is to create nostalgic, romantic and light atmosphere of solitude, beholding, childhood and warmth.
ugh. this is what happens when black metallers get old, isn't it?
― rockapads, Sunday, 10 April 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
Not nearly as complex as Hill or as "mindlessly" (I put it in quotes 'cause I know he thinks about every hit) aggressive as Walter. He is after something very specific from his drummer, something that's rooted in blast beats but slightly different from the norm.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)
"mindlessly" (I put it in quotes 'cause I know he thinks about every hit) aggressive
then why even use that word?
― sarahel, Sunday, 10 April 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)
Because it's meant to sound mindless, even though it clearly isn't. Weasel is attracted to, and cannily exploits, the imagery of savagery as it relates to black metal and free jazz.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 18:52 (fifteen years ago)
huh, is he normally more… out there? on that new record with mary halvorson he just seems like… a free jazz drummer to me.
― j., Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, try the group he co-leads with second drummer Marc Edwards; they've got two releases that are just relentlessly assaultive. You could also check out his Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi album with Jim O'Rourke and Fred Lonberg-Holm.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)
i just watched "until the light takes us"... not sure if it was ever mentioned in any of the previous rolling metal threads, but my rental store just got it in this week. it was informative... but a bit weird. fenriz was insufferable. varg seemed to have a better handle on the politics of black metal and gave the genre a good sense of context, but then he got on about his judeo-christian hate and it was harder to take him seriously.
i was hoping that it would be a good primer into black metal music, but the music seemed to be the last thing on the filmmakers' minds.
