yes some of the lyrics might have been better written but she turned the song from one about her band into one about everyone else in front of her. i looked down the row of seats and my daughter was clapping and crying. and it was happy and sad for me in the same instant.

and i wished i were her age again.

i like the thieves/jeans rhyme fwiw

"Long Live" is my least favorite track; the chorus sounds like it could have blasted over the end credits of an Ann Hathaway vehicle from 2001.

"long live" rules

markers, Monday, 4 April 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

I've warmed up to "Long Live" a lot, didn't care for it much at first. I like how it plugs into her obsession with recognizing, cataloging and holding onto specific emotions and experiences because she knows they won't last -- it goes from "Remember this moment" in the first verse to imagining some future when she's not even in touch with any of these people any more and they're showing their hypothetical kids pictures of it all.

The song it reminds me of most, thematically and in its embrace/effective deployment of clichés is Springsteen's "No Surrender."

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 4 April 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

That's a great way to put it, tipsy. It's def. a highlight of the album for me---my attention lags a bit (a bit!) after "Mean" but peaks again with the last two songs.

Euler, Monday, 4 April 2011 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

and each night she plays it she's with another crowd/moment telling herself and them to hold onto it.

nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 4 April 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

it's cheesy in a stagey way, but it works.

nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 4 April 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

like elvis doing 'can't help falling in love' in ever more cabaret-esque stylings at the end of each show.

"long live" has always been a favourite of mine - you don't need to think about who she wrote it about (just like the love songs), but she totally nails that one moment of being at your absolute best - at the absolute height of that thrill, when you feel invulnerable and 73 feet tall (cf t.i.'s "what you know"). i listened to it a lot around the time of the london protests in december and last week.

lex pretend, Monday, 4 April 2011 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

a protest song without the protest?

very nice! I'm interested in seeing how big it can get on the country charts, because dreaming of big cities isn't the usual country trope in 2011.

I'm impressed with the fashion designer in the video; seems like a ~message~, no?

AWESOME

Yeah, it's like the ne plus ultra of "it gets better" videos. Fantastic!

just showed the "mean" video to my little one, around the first chorus she goes: "aren't they gonna show her on the railroad tracks like in the cd paper?" and then beginning of second verse video cuts to taylor tied on the tracks and she goes: "aaaaaaahhhh!!!!" totally made my night

great video/song!

ilxor, I know you sometimes feel like ilx revolves around you (ilxor), Sunday, 8 May 2011 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

Great video for "Mean". Uses some country tropes but still very pop glam, you can tell she loves Shania.

Still wish "Sparks Fly" were going to be a single, not just for my sake but for radio's.

I don't wanna be with nobody but boobs. Oh no. (edwardo), Sunday, 8 May 2011 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it's like the ne plus ultra of "it gets better" videos.

was so happy about this too cuz i was pushing this song hard last year as the frontrunner in this sudden mini-genre, even though it didn't seem to have occurred to taylor's marketing people.

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 8 May 2011 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

also i did you belong with me at karaoke a few months ago with a bunch of people including jaymc and thoroughly humiliated myself on the chorus, which is wholly impossible for me

maybe they (sensibly) didn't want to associate themselves with katy perry and ke$ha.

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 May 2011 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

"sparks fly" does seem like a natural single, surprised that hasn't happened yet. i think they just gave up in the UK after "mine", though.

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 May 2011 08:09 (fifteen years ago)

ke$ha has an "it gets better" song? I didn't think ke$ha was able to grasp concepts like "change".

Tim F, Sunday, 8 May 2011 08:13 (fifteen years ago)

iirc she tried to graft "we r who we r" on to it all

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 May 2011 08:15 (fifteen years ago)

i wish 'the story of us' had been the first single. that would've been cool

uberweiss, Sunday, 8 May 2011 09:25 (fifteen years ago)

"Mean" is the country radio single, and she released "Story of Us" to pop radio. She shot both videos a few weeks ago, so a "Story of Us" video should be coming soon.

trippin lookin at my portfolio (billy), Sunday, 8 May 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

i still don't get "the story of us"

by get i mean remember

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 May 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Story of Us is still one of my favourites on the album, but 'Mean' could potentially be a killer single, if it catches on. Video is fun, and simultaneously less and more hamfisted in its approach to IGB type stuff than Firework and Beautiful and Fuckin' Perfect etc. etc. etc.

Alex in Montreal, Sunday, 8 May 2011 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

there's not a single song on the album that i think is less than great. however the sequencing of better than revenge => innocent => haunted => last kiss has never worked for me.

uberweiss, Sunday, 8 May 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

aw the "mean" video is great

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 May 2011 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

Yes! So glad it's a single. Stellar choice.

That was awesome. Hands down my favourite song/video from this project. And Speak Now as a whole hasn't really stuck with me as much as Fearless.

failure to recognize semi-ironic 'faggot' (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

i like the video too

markers, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

Fave video, really? I think it's a little dull, though maybe that's my feeling about the song. Weird, cos when Speak Now first came out I thought "The Story of Us" was the obvious hit, but now it's kinda faded for me. I think lex said something about it sounding loud and catchy but not actually being catchy, which I sorta agree with.

In the exact opposite way, "Sparks Fly" has really grown on me, and I really hope that's the next single. Such a BANGER, and I love how she manages to sound sultry and excited and terrified and horny and coy all at the same time.

I think the best Speak Now vid so far was the "Back to December" one; all scenes with the ludicrously pretty boy looked like Gus van Sant directed it.

trippin lookin at my portfolio (billy), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

Sparks Fly is the other standout for me. Favourite video might be a little bit of an exaggeration. Mean was a little too on the nose, but good for what it was. Mine was whatever. Back to December was nice and moody, but didn't blow me away.

failure to recognize semi-ironic 'faggot' (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

story of us is among my least favorite from that album

crazy donkey winger (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

I do like that the boy in it is the least "pretty twink" of all the boys in her videos (aside from the dopey "Tim McGraw" boy), and therefore the most adorable one to me, though maybe it's partially his glasses.

Also this is the best part:

I might like this video more than I thought I did.

trippin lookin at my portfolio (billy), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i know she's gonna have like 4 more singles from this and everything but i'm still shocked "sparks fly" hasn't been one yet

^ shocks fly

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 03:06 (fifteen years ago)

Well, given how totally LITERAL all the music video interpretations have been thus far, Sparks Fly would awkwardly involve T-Swift picking a dude up at a bar for a random hookup, so perhaps they're waiting on that one until they've moved past the "Taylor sings lyrics, screen shows story" stage of the MV campaign.

otm!

it was only seeing her live that really catapulted "sparks fly" into LIVE territory for me but my god is it ever there now.

i don't think taylor tends to make very interesting videos, really. "mean" maybe the best from this campaign, maybe because it's uncomfortably on the nose.
