Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 27 June 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Heard them playing this album at Rocks in Your Head (age-old Soho record store here in NYC) this week and was completely struck by it in a weird sort've "what IS this?" sorta way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 July 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I just picked up Here Comes the Indian, and I love it, as does my cat. I swear, when is the damn hype machine gonna catch up: NYC isn't no wave, it's NEW AGE!

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This could sneak up to become my fave from this year if they don't watch out.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I was totally jazzed to see Avery Tare and Panda Bear about a month ago, and I was so, so bored and disappointed. I haven't heard the records, and I don't know if the full group is any good, but wow. Sounded like Beaches and Canyons except somehow even more aimless and formless. Total snoozer dud.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them earlier this month, and though they didn't really sound too much like the record, I wasn't disappointed. I guess in a pinch I could probably do without so much "autistic drumming" (my friend's description). But I thought they seemed remarkably "together", as in I don't think it was all aimless, it sounded like they were actually playing "songs".

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Beaches and Canyons comparison is pretty apt, actually. They don't necessarily sound similar, but this is what I was getting at w/my (half-tongue-in-cheek) New Age comment.

I mean it as something positive -- these are records I listen to in a less-than-conscious way. Maybe akin to what Eno was talking about way back when regarding his "ambient" music, but with a more organic (shitty word, sorry) feel.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
...

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

saw them again last month, huge club (700 people)... organic strum drone und klammor. upthread = EEP EEP!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 October 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna see them next week. The turn out will probably 40 people, as usual.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 2 October 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, gygax! Where'dya see them? They played at The Ramp in Berkeley.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

uk tour this month

details

www.fat-cat.co.uk

fat cat are also releasing their last two albums as a double cd in the u.k. next monday so i will finally get to hear them.

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 2 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the 2-CD repackage of their first two records going to be released in the States?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 2 October 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

adaml, i saw them at slim's cuz i couldn't make the ramp showwwwwww.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

they had promo copies of it sent in the states. the new art is *unfortunate* but at least it'll hit outside of new york city. i hear they are recording new 'songy' stuff as a duo. it should be kin to what they were doing on tour, which i heard was telepathic.

andy, Thursday, 2 October 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
can i have a copy of this, colin? will travel, can supply own cdrs!

raphael diligent (Cozen), Saturday, 29 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my, i wish! - i am too broke to buy a thing, sorry. I havent seen it anywhere either.

jed (jed_e_3), Saturday, 29 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i am still fairly floor'd by everything i've heard, but especially spirit... (the reish is def in my top 10 this year)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this band with all of my little heart. But mostly when I'm on a little bit of the something something.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a fan. I bought Danse Manatee when it came out, because it was cheap and it looked interesting, and then I emailed the address to find out more about them. This was what, two years ago? I was still in school. One of the guys from the band emailed me back, and told me about Spirit, which I bought as soon as it was back in stock at Other Music. I really love the Spirit album, I think it's one of the most beautiful art records that I've ever heard. I like the Campfire Music and Here Comes The Indian, but nothing on either of them blows me away as much as "Penny Dreadfuls" or "Essplode."

God bless them. I hope that Avey Tare eventually comes around to making more "pop" records at some point, though. I think that melody, lyrics, and structure suits their style very well. I can appreciate the crazier, more free-form music, but it doesn't move me nearly as much.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 30 November 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was excited to hear that Panda Bear "opened" for the Kompakt gig in NYC recently by singing over a DJ's tracks, just like that cute Colette DJ from Chicago (or is it L.A. now?). Really like their albums, but I'd love to get ahold of a live set of theirs. Like Mr. Quintron and various garage bands I've seen recently, they really seem to shine the most when they play live, and no studio recording is going to capture what they're capable of. They're grrrrr-eat!

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this spirit that you speak of?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Never mind, I have it in my sights now.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

RE: pop, yes I like it when it's pop and wish there was more

RE: Kompakt gig...Panda Bear has performed while singing on top of Other Music's Scotty Mau(a fantastic DJ) before, they called themselves "Jane"

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 1 December 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

not a big fan myself but thought you'd get a kick out of this piece by the great Rod Smith: http://www.seattleweekly.com/features/0330/music-animal.php

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 1 December 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Jane CDRs are really good. They made very very few of them and sold them at Other Music.
The new AT and PB record will be quite a bit poppier than anything recently and should be amazing. I don't think it is coming out for a quite a while, unfortunately, even though they already recorded it.

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 1 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Jane CDRs are really good. They made very very few of them and sold them at Other Music."

D'oh! I'd love to hear them. I'll be in NY later this month. Do you think there's a snowball's chance in hell they might still have any?

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Monday, 1 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
now i'm a fan. (colin, i'll fix you up.)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

this kinda sounds like how i wished the oxes sounded like when i was dreaming about them, even though nothing like them.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'bat you'll fly' really sounds like the russian futurists. did anyone hear that russian futurists record or what?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i) this is better through headphones.
ii) he can sound scarily like billy corgan in places; meep.
iii) danse manatee isn't as good as the first disc : /
iv) maybe that was the earphones thing, cos i listened to it through speakers (cf. i).

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the russian futurists lots but i've never noticed a similarity - i'll have to listen again.

has anyone else heard Hollindagain?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it was just that particular track, toby.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i should listen to danse manatee again, i've only heard it once.

actually i should listen to all their albums lots on headphones, i don't get to play them much at home cos ppl tend to complain.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hollindagain (or whatever its called) is their best - unfortnately, it's now impossible to find.

What's this "Jane" CDR??

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 8 January 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Campfire Songs! Campfire Songs! Sounds nothing like the rest of their material! But it's REALLY PRETTY and REALLY DRONEY.

Ho hum. Is Hollindagain the live album people are always talking about?

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 January 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i really really want to know more about this "jane" cdr (cdrs?).

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 8 January 2004 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and i totally see where you're coming from re russian futurists.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hollindagain is supposed to be reissued, i think on paw tracks but maybe fat cat? dunno when.

jane is a duo featuring panda bear (under his own name) and another party i wasn't able to place. very beat-oriented, possibly even clubby. i have no idea where their cdrs might be available, i got a copy from a friend of a friend, who found it in a used been in a store that isn't around anymore in houston.

m

Mark Flaum, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

On one of the Michael Mayer threads on ILM someone wrote that Jane is Panda Bear "singing" over DJ Casio... I think that's write.

what is 'here comes the indian' like?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
New live dates from the paw-tracks page, which means new material!
February 20th - New York - Barnard College with Need New Body and White Magic - Prentis Hall - 632 W 125th St.

February 21st - New York - Knitting Factory with the Numbers

March 27th - New York - Anthology Film Archives

Deacon told me it might even be danceable!
Plus jane is playing with Orthrealm and Black dice next Friday at the Knit. New York's long dark winter is over.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Also since a lot of people were asking: the Jane CDRs were released in photocopied black and white 7" sleeves which made them look kind of like a punk band. The covers are really nice though and they often feature the steal your face dead logo.
They made them all themselves, very few, I don't know how many and I guess they are all gone. They have been talking about putting out a 12"
One description I read somewhere is Cologne beats with psych vocals. Pretty true. The vocals are heavily effected, like a lot of AS stuff. One song, "Coconuts" sounds like reggae. That one and solid gold wall are my favorites. Most songs are around 20 minutes long.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mitchell - i've asked at other music twice and written Noah personally, and those CDRs are GONE, man - please put it up on soulseek!!!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Terrestrial Tones.

but as far as the AT & PB stuff is concerned, what little I've heard all sounds like Cornelius.

Roger, Friday, 6 February 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

roger, I would except, well, I don't even own a computer.

Roger, have you only heard Spirit...? If you like TT I would reccomend Here Comes the Indian esp the "Two Sails" and "Infant Dressing Table" tracks.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

mitchell - i guess then a burn is out of the question?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

roger, I'll see what I can do. I probably can use a friend's computer.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'Stride Rite' really doesn't sound much like them at all. Makes me think of Lambchop or any of those Americana bands who occasionally stray into Sinatra-esque swing-balladry. Very nice. Yes, would have been a perfect closer

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Monday, 9 October 2023 16:00 (two years ago)

maybe it's just specific sounds that reminded me of FBK, maybe all the layered vocal bits like in "What Would I Want? Sky" or how these calm passages would suddenly explode into something else like in "Graze". or maybe how the last part of "Defeat" sounds like an even more stony version of "On a Highway".

that said a lot of people on here disagree with my "sounds like x" comparisons so take it with a grain of salt :)

frogbs, Monday, 9 October 2023 16:46 (two years ago)

Xpost: “Stride Rite” is a Deakin song. If you haven’t heard “sleep cycle” it’s one of the better projects related to AnCo I’ve heard.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 9 October 2023 20:01 (two years ago)

they've done plenty of floaty piano songs like "stride rite" before - first half of "graze" (there's your fall be kind comparison), "daffy duck", "safer", etc.

people just coming to this album should also listen to time skiffs which is this one's sibling (the material was written at the same time, and only ended up on two albums due to recording constraints caused by the pandemic) and a little better. it's even more like mpp/fall be kind, it's like the chiller moments from those filtered through 70s exotica

ufo, Monday, 9 October 2023 22:23 (two years ago)

Defeat is awesome. First part is reminiscent of "bees" (my maybe favourite song from feels). Love when AnCo loses the drums and geologist gets to do his thing. You can tell they ain't kids anymore with this one

H.P, Friday, 13 October 2023 09:39 (two years ago)

This while album is incredible, almost exactly what I wanted to hear from these guys at this point. Just an incredible run since Time Skiffs and I hope it continues.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:36 (two years ago)

This is the first time since 2005 that this band will make it into my top ten albums list.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 19 October 2023 18:06 (two years ago)

"defeat" has more than a little side 5 of tales from topographic oceans realness

The mood and the melody of Deakin’s song “Stride Rite” called to mind one of my favorite Josh Ritter songs,“Myrna Loy”.

Yes!

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 29 November 2023 17:07 (two years ago)

"defeat" has more than a little side 5 of tales from topographic oceans realness

definitely in A) the sheer amount of lyrics and B) the fact that it takes forever to get going

I like it more than any of the TFTO tracks as a whole though

hearing this live was probably one of my coolest show experiences ever - I try to not look at setlists beforehand, all I knew was they were likely gonna play some new stuff. I had no idea they were gonna play so much of it, much less a tune that was 23 minutes long. once it got to the ending bit I remember looking behind me and just seeing a sea of transfixed faces, nobody was talking or making any noise. I've never quite seen a general admission concert get like that before.

frogbs, Wednesday, 29 November 2023 17:22 (two years ago)

At the show i went to, my friend wouldn’t shut up his mouth through the whole thing. Still good though.

BringTheAuBonPain, Wednesday, 29 November 2023 21:21 (two years ago)

I keep forgetting about this.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 December 2023 02:10 (two years ago)

So have most publication year end lists, so you’re not alone!

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 2 December 2023 17:04 (two years ago)

you know what I actually like the way the album ends. I think given the downtrodden nature of the album and the fact that it's starting to set in just how long these guys have been together ending on a acapella track like that is a cool idea. like one of those in the end we've all still got each other sorta vibes. "All the Clubs are Broken" is the one that really doesn't fit, I actually dig it a lot but it doesn't belong here
