the production on that track is amazing

you think? some woozy (flanged?) synths and super dry drums in a simple midtempo pattern always sounded kinda lazy and nothing to me.

jax, i assume that suggesting moroder would kinda be unnecessary for ya?
― slight even by tweet standards (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 05:23 (fifteen years ago)
what are you thinking of? i have most of his stuff. only thing i can think of is donna summer's 'grand illusion'. rest is pretty dancey. i think this thread was to catch up on modern r'n'b that people like lex think we're overlooking by listening to indie-ish groups like the weeknd.
― jaxon, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
i thought you were looking for ambient abstract trip electronic rnb on the faster than the speed of love tip, my mistake
― slight even by tweet standards (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
i would just like to put it out there that i have listened to nothing but r'n'b for the past 2 weeks. catching up on both real and indie spectrums. stuff people thing i should be listening to. trey songz 'pp&p', ciara 'basic instinct', electric red 'how to be a lady vol 1', frank ocean 'nostalgia/ultra', how to dress well 'love remains', jeremih 'all about you', jhene aiko 'sailing souls', the dream 'love king' and a bunch of mixes of r'n'b influenced stuff. nguzunguzu, kingdom, deadboy. i have loved lots of these albums (j.aiko, dream, jeremih, ciara, electrik red). thought some of them were pretty boring (trey sonz, htdw) and sorta half half on the frank ocean. after all of this, i can say i am still a fan of the weeknd. oh well. at least i like lots more music than i did 2 weeks ago.
― jaxon, Friday, 1 April 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)
not going in that other thread because it's a beast and people are hardly talking about music
― jaxon, Friday, 1 April 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
o, and the ty&kory mixtape which was kinda meh. 'stripclubs' is cool, but only because it reminds me of something off around the world in a day.
― jaxon, Friday, 1 April 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)
i think its a mistake to frame this as 'if only you had heard these first,' fwiw & def wouldnt expect that to convert you. i do think it makes an argument against this music being particularly unique tho

More songs to talk about: Lil B's "I"m God", Rihanna's "Russian Roulette", Rick Ross' "Aston Martin Music".― Tim F, Saturday, April 2, 2011 1:21 AM (Yesterday) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG6zsHUCum4forgot how great this one was. 'myspace' is pretty amazing too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ2nCGawrSYnot feeling this one tbh. it's almost there, but the choruses are kinda corny. something about the chord changes, melody & modulations have this cliched feeling of like overcoming pain & empowerment or something. hollywood ending type shit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a35rNEBNiO4i love the way the beat goes underwater when drake starts singing. just wish he'd stop singing
― jaxon, Sunday, 3 April 2011 22:46 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I'm not a huge fan of "Russian Roulette" TBH, I just think it's an interesting point of comparison because the music's totally in the Weeknd vein and thematically it's sorta there as well, the only difference is that it's a power-ballad.
