trying really hard w/ a band 99% of their readers already know/like

this thing is a lot of words!

John Cage's "4:33" is all about a void of composition and performance creating space for random, ambient sounds. James Murphy's "45:33" is the exact opposite: a micro-managed, dense, building-size mural of music that leaves nothing to chance.
Pitchfork writers get paid by the word : CONFIRMED

Like I love LCD Soundsystem and love a lot of these writers. But couldn't imagine reading any of this for any reason. Am I alone in that?

yeah i'm kind of on yr side there, i mean lcd soundsystem are one of those bands that have never been short of rock crit love, so they've had a loooot of stuff written abt them already

I mean, no offense to LCD and no offense to writers who's stuff is genuinely and consistently good, but I really can't muster any reason to tackle any of this.

I'm trawling through it and barf
it's no surprise that "Us v. Them" became a live staple for the group (it's their tenth most-played song according to setlist.fm)
They only have 3 albums with 9 songs each

oh man wtf. i aint even gonna open that LCD piece from the sound of it. at least grays0n curr1n's mtn g0ats review is good, i guess? read this one instead plz

tbf you could argue that Pitchfork would not have the cachet they have if they hadn't come up along with LCD Soundsystem, so it kind of makes sense in terms of acknowledging a debt
not that that makes me want to read it

if they hadn't insisted on making this an exhaustive song-by-song examination and actually edited it down, it could have been good or at least readable. i'm not a pile on pitchfork kinda guy but i skimmed this whole thing and it's really redundant and long and boring.

i found it sort of interesting, the couple of entries i power-skimmed, mainly the idea that circa 2001 the idea of indie people liking dance or trying to make dance music was seen as unusual in the US

like, it's like one of those beatles coffee table books
except about lcd soundsystem
and unreadable
(it's not a line of argument I'm particularly invested in defending but kind of how I view Pitchfork and its rise to critical prominence; a large part of it was that they were in the right place at the right time covering the right people, some of whom were established artists going in odd directions a la Radiohead, while others were in niche scenes about to gain national exposure a la LCD)

another acoustic guitar-based record, another Fahey reference...
Frontman Josh T. Pearson disappeared for several years, then emerged in Germany playing intimate, barely scripted shows that blended American Primitive guitar playing (think John Fahey) with quasi-Biblical lyrics (think Wovenhand).

i think that's for people who like john fahey but don't know what 'american primitive' means. there are actually people out there who read pitchfork and don't really care about learning genre names and stuff.
