My bro was saying it's easy for ppl to forgive chris brown cuz beating women plays in the macho narrative of the hip-hoppers he's aligning himself with.
I promptly told him he was offtm and that beating women is been long considered a sucker move by hiphop (cf. "Posse On Broadway" et al).
But then he asked why everyone is so quick to forgive chris brown and I didn't have an answer.
This is all a long way of saying, why is #teambreezy so quick to forgive chris brown?

they liked him before and still like him now. maybe are also in denial. just really want there to be a big popular male R&B act? idk man
― bernard snowy, Saturday, 26 March 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
or they don't think of Rihanna as a real person
Fans do generally let musicians off the hook for heinous things, I mean, Vince Neil got Hanoi Rocks guy killed and fans stuck by him.
Fans use the overplayed and reductive "He made a mistake, he's human" trope too.

I turned on SNL last night, saw Chris Brown mugging at the camera in one of the quick asides they do during commercial breaks, then turned off SNL.

Suggest Ban PermalinkI think another angle that contributed to this Chris Brown fiasco is black nationalism. When the Chris Brown/Rihanna fiasco came out, I heard and saw a lot of anti-Caribbean talk coming out of a lot of black American's mouths. Chris Brown is seen as "one of us" meaning he is a good ole southern black boy who is misunderstood and trying to do right. Even though in his music and public appearances that $#%^ hasn't shown any humility at all.Rihanna is the exotic, Caribbean girl who "has to be unstable because all Caribbean girls are" so black Americans just can not believe she is totally innocent. Since she is "not one of us" she has to be evil and deceiving.

This is probably why I support Amanda Knox, to be honest.

I can understand why fellow psycho celebs would be sympathetic to guy, but they don't seem to grasp that the kid needs HELP more than he needs people to shower him with praise and ignore his self-pity/violence.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:13 (fifteen years ago)
Esp since this is a guy who seems to pick high-pressure, high profile moments (the night before the Grammys, backstage of Good Morning America) to go fucking apeshit.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:16 (fifteen years ago)
trying to think about any abusive celeb who totally got their shit together after counseling and drawing a blank
― slight even by tweet standards (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:30 (fifteen years ago)
so i guess people should just politely ignore their violent episodes, then?

And I'm guessing abusive celebs who get their shit together tend to fly under the radar better than those who don't
