Jay Smooth is black?
I guess that shows some of my own White Privilege – I automatically assume anyone who does not fit into any of my preconceived “slots” for race defaults to “white” automatically.

Jay Smooth: Those were always issues that were central to my identity, growing up the son of a Black dad and a white mom, with parents who were very politically engaged and very conscious of those issues.

some things i wrote abt the radio in general/chris brown in particular on my tumblz th'other day:
— "Make a Movie" is kind of old but I think I missed it up until now because, duh, I haven’t really gone out of my way to listen to Chris Brown songs. Surprisingly, despite a chorus containing the lines “I’ma throw a couple thousand, baby, strip for this” and “You see what I’m workin’ with, I’ma break your back with this”, it is the less-troubling of the two Breezy songs — questions of taste aside, the sex-tape thing is basically just here to serve as the metaphorical scaffolding for one of those goofy high-concept sex jams R.Kelly perfected, which I think are essentially harmless except that they might give little kids some weird ideas about the prevalence of freakiness in the adult world. But hey, consenting adults, etc etc — Twista even offers to edit out anything you’re not comfortable with, which seems like the right attitude.— … "Look At Me Now", on the other hand, grosses me out a lot more because A.)it feels like a conscious effort to rehabilitate Brown’s damaged rep, B.)I actually kind of like it. It’s astonishing how well the formal structure of the song works to this end: on first listen, the hook sounds lifeless and plodding, and Brown’s voice grates on me; then Busta Rhymes drops in for about 90 seconds of relentless verbal assault, and by the next “Look at me now!”, I’m just happy for a chance to catch my breath. Repeat the process with a decent but unmemorable Lil Wayne verse about telling off haters, and laugh all the way to the bank.

how exactly is "Look At Me Now" any more a conscious effort to rehabilitate Brown’s damaged rep than any of his other giant hit songs over the past year?
― NO BLOGS WERE INVOLVED. (some dude), Saturday, 26 March 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't say it "is" more of one, just that it "feels" like more of one. I mean, the hook is literally just him saying "look at me now" — who is he addressing here? 'now' as opposed to ...?
but then also: bringing in hi-profile guest rappers to, basically, rap really fast and be like "hey Breezy's cool with me" — the way the whole thing is driven by the opposition between these exhausting fast-rapping parts, and the lazy laid-back hook — it feels like an attempt to achieve some distance from, or containment of, the Chris Brown 'brand'
― bernard snowy, Saturday, 26 March 2011 14:28 (fifteen years ago)
the hook isn't just "look at me now," it's also "I'm gettin' paper" and "fresher than a motherfucker." it just seems too generic a sentiment to fit into any meta narrative. and he's had other hits with rappers in the last year.
― NO BLOGS WERE INVOLVED. (some dude), Saturday, 26 March 2011 14:50 (fifteen years ago)
the problem with Chris Brown's attempt to rehabilitate his image is that he sort of thinks he's entitled to forgiveness and thinks it is an automatic thing, like he doesn't have to show contrition or appropriate remorse...or as discussed above, he turns the situation around to make it about him.
I don't know him personally, but I wouldn't be surprised if the typical Chris Brown apology goes "I'm sorry, BUT..."
― check out my malady (San Te), Saturday, 26 March 2011 14:52 (fifteen years ago)
xpost right, and it's that very genericness (along with, I guess, inability to rap?) that's being played up here! like, bring some crazy-sounding dudes on the track, let them cut loose — there, doesn't Chris Brown seem nice and comforting by comparison?
I'm not saying this is a clever scheme somebody deliberately concocted; just that it hits me like that and makes me feel kinda gross. but then I also thought Jennifer Hudson was God taking over my radio in order to chastise me with "Where You At?", so maybe take my radio opinions with a grain of salt

there are apparently people who have suggested Rihanna hit CB first, and thus the beating was 'warranted'.
I suggest those people drink cyanide lemonade.

My bro was saying it's easy for ppl to forgive chris brown cuz beating women plays in the macho narrative of the hip-hoppers he's aligning himself with.
I promptly told him he was offtm and that beating women is been long considered a sucker move by hiphop (cf. "Posse On Broadway" et al).
But then he asked why everyone is so quick to forgive chris brown and I didn't have an answer.
This is all a long way of saying, why is #teambreezy so quick to forgive chris brown?
