this reminds me of the oj album in that it sounds like a bunch of tracks from the mixtapes, without dj drops. theres not enough of a substantial change to make it feel like "ahh, the debut" the way you did going into say GRODT. i do think this record is pretty dope, but in a low key way & much like gucci doesnt stand out in his catalog of mixtapes

so fly zone (D-40), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i pretty much feel it -- i think it's easily one of the best albums of the year so far but i think lots of rappers are dealing w/ this same problem

it seems like you can go three ways

-- go full pop like b.o.b. wiz khalifa & pretty much abandon any trace of rap in your music, at least the rap of your mixtapes

-- go halfway like gucci did w/ SVRD and end up w/ some softserve joints that no one wants to hear interspersed w/ hi-fi versions of your bread & butter like "heavy" or w/e

-- make an album quality mixtape like max or waka or boosie that has better quality & quality control than your albums & no dj drops but doesn't feel like a 'growth' of sorts (maybe the waka is objectionable in this context)

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

waka's an exception cuz he didnt have nearly as much material out as boosie or max. but thats otherwise otm

so fly zone (D-40), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

max's other prob here of course being that hes in jail & cant record his own 'lemonade' or w/e

so fly zone (D-40), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

right

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

what was the last thing released before he went to jail?

flopson, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

iirc some of the stuff on this is the last stuff he recorded before jail but his last big tape was quarantine

so fly zone (D-40), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

lol @ his wiki having the heading 'false murder charges'

so fly zone (D-40), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

btw

He states that he’ll be out by the summer and plans on releasing a double album

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 March 2011 08:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i think max is one of the only rappers around now who i really want to hear a "pop" album from - could be amazing.

i'd probably go with a mixtape but the album is really very good, it's just prob a bit more straight laced for ppl that are into the super out there, wavy max singing over britney spears beats type shit

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 April 2011 22:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Cool, thanks.

Number None, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 22:24 (thirteen years ago) link

if you haven't heard anything i'd def first check out those songs that deej lists in his opening post

Yeah i did listen to a few youtubes and stuff. Will do a more in-depth investigation though.

Number None, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i know he's not hostile towards jim anymore but the diss on "green gain" from 'vigilante season' is pretty great

flopson, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:06 (thirteen years ago) link

coke wave is classic & near perfect imo

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:07 (thirteen years ago) link

its one of my favourite albums of all time

flopson, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:14 (thirteen years ago) link

cooleh story is really poorly written but it seems like he could have a shot on appeal idk

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:17 (thirteen years ago) link

wtf happened to zvookster? he was annoying itt

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the big zvookster post is the best in the entire thread fyi esp this

i think noz realized he was doing something unique in NY with his relationship to melody, sort of like a less embarrassed, less cynical 50. 50 often sounds like he's too gangster to really try to sing, so he'll just indicate melody enough to get it across or condescend to make it commercial. with max b his woozy relationship with melody is inherent in every track, inherent to who he is & what he's doing on the track

flopson, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:39 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont think he quite has it there, altho i agree that max has a unique take on melody -- its a starting pt
but i dont want to give it away 4 free if u get my meaning :D

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:41 (thirteen years ago) link

also all his other posts were distracting/annoying

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:41 (thirteen years ago) link

... this stuff is kind of perfect to me, blend of really melodic ear & lyrical rapping, matter-of-fact real talk and a reggae-style inclination for reversioning classic pop jams ("do for love" "I want you" even effin "Englishman in new york"). dame grease's production is extroverted pop ish but with a real dilapidated feel, appropriate for post-golden era new york.

this is really great

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:44 (thirteen years ago) link

just fwiw

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:44 (thirteen years ago) link

ya definitely. dilapidated is perfect & so true, think of it especially on beats like 'goon music' or ones that sound like low-bitrate g unit beats

flopson, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 07:48 (thirteen years ago) link

ive had that fucking 'wa-deedee dah dee dayyy' thread stuck in my head for days now

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 08:05 (thirteen years ago) link

*melody* not thread lol

D-40, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 08:05 (thirteen years ago) link

it's kinda weird that max slipped thru the cracks critically, being a dipset affiliate who isn't that far off of wayne's druggy, crooning prolific mixtape period

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 April 2011 08:12 (thirteen years ago) link

is raps arent obviously 'clever' so ppl who jumped on the wayne thing might be at a loss
