WORKING SIX CELL PHONES, NINE IN THE MORNING

In the past week or so, four songs have leaked with incredible OJ verses, and it really seems to me like he’s stepped his game up from even just last year. He sounds remarkably confident to me right now, like this little buzz he caught from Gucci and probably even Soulja Boy has really emboldened and solidified his style. He just seems like he belongs right now, and even when he’s on a song with Fabolous and Juelz he doesn’t seem out of place— in fact, guys like that seem lost in OJ’s dust to me. And that’s not to prop up OJ as more than he is, but I think he’s gotten to the point where his style isn’t a substitute for his rapping. Instead it’s a totally unique and singular flow used by someone who is also a great rapper and who just so happens to be blowing everyone else on tracks out of the water.

these oj da juiceman verses are prrretttty dope yup, surprisingly solid. always loved him as a personality, voice, flow, adlib, think the big difference here is his vocabulary/ideas have expanded? w/o getting stuck in awkward repetitive moments (that this thread's op is prob most extreme example of)

none that bad, but there's one or two lines on the recent Master of Ceremonies full-length that are extremely lazy for Styles. I'll have to give it another listen to find which ones, but yea...(not an OJ the Juiceman fan by any means)

i havent hunted for any but youve never heard styles rhyme a word w/ itself before? thats hardly uncommon

OJ wasnt prepared to be a rap star, that much is obvious. but fronting like hes just straight garbage is wrong.

they shouldnt have brought him to ny & had him doing songs w/ swizz, he jumped out of his own lane & it was a mistake. Maybe he didnt have the focus to make rap work as a career. but he had a unique style & charisma that many rappers ppl talk up on here dont

lots of rappers do this & its not different; whats lame about his freestyle isnt just that line by itself, its that theres no other content there. 2 chainz does this. its not inherently bad

really think he should make the 'basketball player' thing a phrase he uses to end every line a la Juvenile's "Ha"

the deej/whiney/al bitchfest in the middle of this thread is one of the most entertaining and vicious exchanges i've ever read on ilm

obviously the main thing about the line is that it's the closest thing to an actual couplet in the whole little 'freestyle' and wouldn't be that noteworthy dropped in the middle of 16 bars. but i think deej is underestimating how it works (or fails to work, i should say) on several levels. like, usually rappers allude to basketball players having a lot of rings as in championship rings, but he's like a freshman basketball player (presumably college ball, since it's 'freshman' and not 'rookie') who hasn't played in any championships yet?

ross is a great rapper! which is why "9 piece" was so disappointing as a single choice
